    With the slide rule I noticed it started to not work about 20 years ago when turbocharged cars became more popular for street/drag cars. I believe it has a lot more to do with the torque and the way turbocharged cars generally make way more torque and usually lower in the rev range allowing to move more mass from a stand still faster. I had a n/a car and with a perfect launch it did what the ruler said it would.

    the zf autos like hot (70-90c) oil. some big air coolers can cause shifting issues, especially on daily driven cars. best option for a zf is the pwr upgraded exchanger, or a smaller air cooler that has its own fan and thermostat. need to be careful not to oversize them and have the zf auto run too cool, especially under boost. with the ford PCM the zf will (unsure with how the haltech ecu works with the zf TCM) command a torque reduction, different shift maps, etc etc etc... theres over 50 different shift strategies depending on load and temperature in the zf TCM

    Great shit people, thanks for pointing out to everyone why the Barra and Falcon are legitimately heavy hitters. The four litre has excellent torque spread and tractive effort which is why it just hauls through the gears, especially once turbocharged makes for the perfect crossover of daily driving and track car. As to the question regarding transmission limitations, it's not to do with horsepower, only torque output. Every ZF transmission component has it's own maximum service limit of which I do have from a German tech they flew out to sort a valve body issue we had.

    Tailshaft is the bit that comes out of the gearbox (AKA, 3rd motion shaft), that is a propellor shaft (AKA, drive shaft). It does bring up a good point, though, as many people will think of the gearbox upgrade, even the rear differential/axle assembly, but many overlook the drive* shaft which may be stressed well beyond the OEM design limits. With some vehicles, the chassis may also need upgrading at welds and/or mounting points. *Yeah, I call it that too.

  • @jeffsymons7084

    @jeffsymons7084

    4 жыл бұрын

    In Australia it is called a tailshaft. For some reason car parts in particular seem to have varying names in different parts of the world. In some countries in europe it is often called a cardan shaft. Just like boot and trunk or bonnet and hood. Also I have only ever heard "the bit that comes out of a gearbox" called an output shaft. Maybe that is another colloquialism.

  • @thisnthat3530

    @thisnthat3530

    @@jeffsymons7084 I've always referred to it as a "drive shaft", I always thought "tailshaft" was an American term... Maybe that's just an ACT thing or it's changed since the '70s... Also "the bit that comes out of the gearbox" was always plural (bits) and usually was preceded by a loud bang ;)

    Just on the transmission heat exchanger, I'm told the splitting problem was endemic to the ZF6 equipped BF models, and the heat exchanger was replaced with an improved version from the 2008 FG onwards. I've seen a lot of people on forums say you should swap this out and loads of horror stories, but very few for FG, FG-II or FG-X models. I'm sure they can fail as any water/oil heat exchanger can, especially with age, so still a good idea to replace it no doubt, but it does seem it is far less common from 2008 on so probably not something to get too panicked about.

  • @joytech23

    @joytech23

    4 жыл бұрын

    I can definitely vouch for this, have an 08 G6E with 320,000km on it on the original setup so the exchanger seems to be holding up. Personally I would think it's a good idea on a car that's had any money spent on it, $600 parts & labor is cheap insurance for a box that might cost $8000 to rebuild.

    That fuel economy, ouch. I get 11L/100km (vs 15.5) in a ford territory, the heavier AWD SUV version of the same platform as the falcon that uses the same basic DOHC i6. That said the stock FG G6E is rated 11.7L/100km so if they are getting about the same now as stock, it may just be a statement about the driving rather than the motor, but the multiple liters per hundred kilometers worse than its big brother says a lot about the compromises to fuel maps right from factory in order to try squeeze the extra 25kw (under 10%) more power it makes from the barra, and is surprising to me when you can essentially double the factory power of either without any further major compromise.

    Knowing a bit of math, I've never understood the celebration of peak horsepower. As was said here, area under the curve is really much more significant.

    I've got a 2012 FG XR6 ute (n/a) that I've had since new. In really good nick with only 220k. Given the trade in value of Falcons is rubbish, is upgrading the box/internals/ECU and adding a turbo going to get me around the 4-500kw reliable combination that an original turbo car will enjoy, as you have shown? Or is there something I've missed? Will your setup pass a rego pollution test if it came to that? Will your ECU fit in the original box for added stealth?

    So for all the parts & labour, to get a reliable 10.6 quarter mile time 500kw at the wheels, with a stock engine bottom end. It’ll cost $30-35,000 + the price of the car, all done?

    Just wondering with the plazmaman surge tank, I have mine in the engine bay (passenger side) how noisy is yours? Or not? And is there anything that can be done to quieten it down as I have very similar mods to yours and mine is a daily.

    Surprised to see this had the zf 6 speed as it ‘08, was down to price or dimensions? Would the zf-8 be any better. I have the 6 and it’s a little bit meh for spirited driving.

    Surprised this wasn't a 2part at 20min each (That would be fair, have a 3 day gap, double the view count and work the YT algorithm). Also going to miss the glasses, Suited ya. I look wierd with or without mine lol. Also having your eye sliced open F*** THAT!
