Read the book, Ordinary Men, by C. Browning about a regular reserve police unit in WW II Poland. A remarkable peek into how normal community cops-NOT fascists at all-were slowly over time transformed psychologically into active authoritarians that rounded up local Jewish families and either herded them into the cattle cars destined for concentration camps, or marched them to a pit and murdered them. What also shocked me was that not one cop complained and instead complied in their silence.

Fun fact: I got into a car accident in this right next to here, a truck u-turned into me and pushed my car directly into the police station parking lot and my boyfriend ran in to go find an officer and it took like 15 -20 minutes for a cop to show up
