SF6 World Tour Review - The First Good Fighting Game Singleplayer Ever

Ойындар

The post-RE7 Capcom magic has finally reached their fighting games. And it's glorious. This is the first major fighting game I've played that feels like a full, feature-rich video game. They did everything right. It's kinda nuts.
For my character, I was going for a punchgirl. Someone you'd see in the gym and go, "Man, she's cool." Took a while to get a look I was satisfied with. But the final outfit worked pretty well, I think.
You can support me here if you want. ko-fi.com/pariah695

    Tbh it would have made more sense to bring up event matchs from Melee, since it is honestly pretty fun, and is better then Adventure, Subspace, or WoL imo. But it only really works for Melee, since Brawl onwards added multiplayer to it.

    Mortal Kombat Deception also had an open world rpg back in 2004... sort of... It's more of a surreal walking simulator where you wander around the realms doing pointless fetch quests for other characters while life passes you by (your character literally grows older throughout the quest and there's no way to turn it back) It's not what you would expect out of a fighting game (especially one like MK), but it's pretty neat and not that many people talk about it

    I am an experienced fighting game player, and this game still managed to teach me something. Charge inputs have never really been my thing, but because you can't equip the same input to both punch and kick I was forced to move my fireball and DP to charge inputs so I could have more options for the most common input in the game. After finishing world tour I think I might main Dee Jay because of how satisfying the charge inputs are to pull off.

    It's also a great way to learn about the characters themselves for both veterans and newbies. We rarely get to see these characters do stuff aside from fighting while playing the game (usually just small glimpses during their arcade modes), so getting to directly interact with these characters in their spare time is really fresh. Now that I think about it, this is probably why the Blazblue cast were really popular during their heyday too. You got to see them actually be characters that interacted with each other instead of a collection of win quotes. And for newbies, it's just a good introduction to who they are without being totally bombarded by choices. You get introduced to them all one by one, meaning if one of them is appealing to the player, they just follow them and become their student as opposed to skimming through the character select screen for three minutes and going "yeah uh, that one". Plus you get to see their moves first so you can get an idea of how they work instead of spending ten minutes looking at their move list in training mode and trying to see what they do. And it's just a stronger introduction for these characters in general, getting to see them in their off time makes them more appealing as characters. Take Ryu for example. Instead of just seeing some variation of "These fists will lead to the path of my destiny" or "You're a good fighter, wow" for 90% of his dialogue, you get to see that he's totally inept with technology. There's actually something to latch onto with these characters now beyond just what you see in versus and arcade mode.

    While I do enjoy fighting AI in fighters and do think many fg's have had fun single player modes, I have to agree that this is the best there is now for fighters. I think that not only is it a great teaching tool, but that its just such a neat mode in general simply because of its open world and more focused elements. I hope that the mode is attractive enough to newcomers to fighting games that they can before fully involved with them. I know World Tour and the modern controls has already enticed my brother to try and play more, and he gets tired of me trying to ask him if he wants to play a fighter with me lol

  • @Sk0rchy
    @Sk0rchy Жыл бұрын

    19:20 Capcom didn't try to make Modern Controls just training wheels, they're trying to push it as an actual alternative for Classic Controls and that's why they allow them in ranked and tournaments. Not being able to use some attacks in exchange of instant shoryuken and supers can be worth it depending on the character and you can still do the normal special move inputs in Modern Controls to select the strength of your special + avoid the damage nerf. Also in World Tour you can't do some combinations of special moves that have different inputs in Classic (for example: Hadouken + Spiral Arrow) because they are the same motion in Modern so they're simply not avaiable for both

    What do you think of World of Light or other SSB attempts at single player? I use WOL here over SSE because the first is a lengthy run of the game proper facing the ai in standard combat. Nonetheless, it gives options for how to play it and has a particular style that's a key part of the game.

  • @thelastgogeta

    While I'm confident that this is the most ambitious single player for a fighting game yet and I have a lot of praise for the implementation of classic control tutorials with Hadopizza, I'm not sure at least without playing the game that this is even Capcom's best single player let alone non-competitive offering before we get into other companies (I'll continue to swear by Budokai games, Sonic Battle, BlazBlue and others). Here's my distinction... Non-Competitive means cases like Tekken including items or Tekken Ball (which is good at teaching different normals) which can still be multiplayer or any variation of options in Smash Bros which isn't on a limited stages with no items. Single player just means no other people but even SF6 World Tour could use co-op for Dramatic Battle to be a little bit more like Tales of. On a related note, Smash had co-op for its big modes which are often called single player - the implementation varies since I don't think Spirits with co-op is as compelling as other options. The bull/ball battle in SF6 is going in the right direction. As far as learning being best through other people, it may be an ask but having a friend to guide you through some systems is a godsend. I've done a bit of that for Smash recently where I could play with 3 other people (potentially 7 if I dropped training mode) where they could figure out how to move and play a mini-match. Platform fighters in particular have the potential to be really fast teachers since it doesn't need to be 1 to 1. You can be with peers.

    It's pretty easy for me. I already feel like I got my money's worth in SF6 just by playing World Tour. And I can't say that for any other fighting game. Sonic Battle is pretty good. But it does get repetitive. Especially with all the grinding needed normally.

  • @thelastgogeta

    @thelastgogeta

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Pariah6950 Fair, I'll probably get a better sense of what you mean when I get a chance to replay Sonic Battle again as well as SF6 World Tour which would probably justify its purchase through that mode alone for me as well. I've just enjoyed too many other games (none of them being from Netherrealm) to be sure with SF6. I also like my non-competitive modes to avoid gating off content too much. In the demo for SF6, I understood starting with Modern controls and know we are free to go for Modern right after that but holding onto Drive Impact and the like for even an hour after the end of the demo seems excessive to me when Sonic Battle for example let us mess with a fairly full tool kit and many Dragon Ball games simply gated off a few moves or forms (outside of rare SSJ4 Goku vs Raditz action) but if you knew how to reflect blasts or do cancels, you'd still have that to grow at while you go. I'll concede that basically all of my examples are definitely worse teachers but you don't need to have RPG progression get in the way too much.

    I've always thought more people would be more open to playing games outside of their comfort zones if the tutorials were more engaging. I still think that the ps1 tomb raider games had the best tutorials in the 'Lara's Home' levels that expanded with each game. But it wasn't part of the main campaign so it didn't bog down the pacing. Having separate game modes for tutorials should be the standard in my opinion. But hey, that is just my opinion.

And if your opponent beats you then that means that you have to keep playing and keep learning more moves and more strategies. Children are fucking soft nowadays...

    Turning fighting game single player into Yakuza's core gameplay is fuckin genius, Yakuza 1-6 were already structured perfectly for this idea, the only difference is the fighting itself. I'm surprised no one had thought of this sooner. Fuck yeah, downloading the demo now. I'm actually glad the story sucks, because the mocap acting here is fucking AWFUL. Like mocap has never been GOOD, it's just a tool that can be used in place of animation, and the skill of the actor is what carries it- compare this overacting garbage to the subtlety of something like The Last of Us 1 or Death Stranding. So this anime-inspired awful poo poo wave your arms around and jump up and down Donkey Kong Country animated series ass acting, just totally slaughters any presentation for me, but since the story's lame, it means I won't miss anything by just skipping the cutscenes and trying to ignore that equally awful victory movement dance thing the character does when you win.

    @@Pariah6950 Right?! And the technology improving over time clearly has done very little to mitigate this, it's just as awful today as it was in Sonic Adventure 2. It's even worse when applied to characters with stylized proportions, like you see it SO often in stuff like Monster Hunter or Phantasy Star Online 2, it looks so bad lol. But, like I said, it does have it's merits. Andy Serkis as Gollum/Smeagol in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies was incredible, due to both the ultra high quality equipment used as well as his outstanding acting. The Zemeckis Image Movers films from the 2000s and early 2010s are also REALLY well acted for the most part, and only look uncanny due to the character designs, modeling, and maybe the rigging. It can be done super well but unless you have both money and skilled actors, it's gonna be a bitch to not make it look like Mass Effect Andromeda.

We are in a good spot now but even with the series which are secure, you may see some funky monetisation ideas at minimum even if they don't have the guts to sell an ending or online pass anymore. I'd argue that a true ending or free online as much as it is a standard is still less offensive than Character Edit Voucher where you either create a new save after 1000s of hours to match your look or pay Capcom while still keeping the same name which is unchangeable.

    didnt watch the video yet- NOT TRUE! schwarzerblitz was the first! watched the video- 'didnt associate fighting games with rpgs' thinking like that is a BAD bad idea, causes stagnation. y'see, I've had a thought in my head for a while now. doom eternal's programmers referred to each gun as a punch, and programmed specific weaknesses in each demon to a specific gun, like caco will get killed by a grenade in it's mouth every time, or revenant's bones being shredded apart by shot guns. the biggest complaint of the subspace emmissary (bear with me, I'm going somewhere) was that you dont need to think when you play it, nothing is stopping you from using your big dumb unga bunga moves all the time. if you married doomk eternal's enemy weaknesses to subspace, you would solve one of the major complaints of the mode, primid is the generic who doesnt have weaknesses, mites die from down smash, gun primids bullets reflected will murder gun primid, autolance needs an up smash to remove the helmet, feyesh instantly dies from forward air, stab armight in the gut with up air, and so on, that would be pretty substantial i think. That AI comment is dumb. see, I've already seen games that have individualised enemies, this isnt new for games. it CAN be done, but for some dumb reason, fight game programmers dont look at other games for good ideas, and it's infuriating. off the top of my head, smash bros ultimate level 9 AI isnt individualized, but it DOES improvise, because it's reacting to your inputs, and BOY can you tell with kazuya. computer kaz regularly destroys top level players, and I just go slow, so as not to give him much to work with, and take him out. a thought I had with motion inputs. when ryu was put into smash 4, I tried him out, see what the big deal was. I didnt. then kazuya was put in ultimate. it's hard to go back to limited options. what I realised that put me off of ryu, and terry come to think of it, was I couldnt SEE when I did the input correctly. in that line of logic, WHAT THE HECK is stopping street fighter from adding little 'ready' animations to each input? charges could have a little dead space body meter, ryu's hand could light on fire, or curl into a fist. before someone sez that would lock you in place until the animation ends, NO. it DOESNT have to. that is a choice, and you DONT have to have lock animations. shooter games have had free movement animations for ages now, *reload,* chuck grenade, melee, the bleeping JUMP. in the realm of teaching inputs, I approve of the minigames. y'know what would be even cooler? paper mario has a thing where, if you select the hammer, you walk up to the enemy, are told to hold the control stick back- "3, 2, 1, NOW!" let go, and that's a charge move from a fighting game, in an rpg. SO, why not go all the way? see, THIS is why the 'didnt associate fighting games with rpgs' thinking is such a bad idea, especially infuriating when after playing as kaz in smash bros, I realized we coulda had a game like him on the GAME BOY! and as for my comment about schwarzerblitz, it doesnt have a hub, it uses the fight after fight system with the standard rules, but one of the things that schwarzerblitz *does* is use the rules *against* you. take the chapter 'deep troubles'. at some point, shaz the shark man is pursued by a immortal murder machine onto a train, and you cant kill him, the fight is unwinnable by the standards of the rules. so DONT fight him! you are on a TRAIN! jus' knock 'im off! also, tekken 3, 4, 5 and 6 want a word with you about seamlessly going into fight mode in a combat hallway.

So much that people are begging them to be put back into games like DOA, Tekken and SoulCalibur. You can do better than this. Disappointing to see this kind of rage bait etc come from your channel.
