Crash N. Sane Trilogy Review - Great Games, But with a Downward Trend

Ойындар

This is what I've been playing while working on my previous 3D Sonic videos. Thought this would be a much shorter video but it turns out I had a lot to say about these games.
I think that weird inability to slide on a neutral landing I mention when talking about Crash 2 might only be when on ice. But that's still really dumb.
Another thing worth mentioning is I really like all the voice acting in this game. Everyone sounds great. I'm glad they kept around the actors from the later Crash games for this. They are all so fitting.

Apparently the spinning high jump was in the original games. Nice that N. Sane is faithful enough to keep old bugs, I guess. Thanks to the people who informed me in the comments.

Also the slide-spin is pretty broken in NST for speedruns, another "bug" they kept in. I think it's as fast as the running shoes if combined with a certain exploit

one thing to note is that while they did keep the glitched jump as a feature, they removed the possibility to get the red gem in snow go from crash 2 early with it by putting it higher than in the original version

When people say that they think that Crash 1 are hard they are not talking about the N.Sane Version oh no no no, Its the PS1 version they are talking about, If you want to 100% the game you have to beat every single level...without dying. And what's even worse If you want to save your progress, you have to beat a level without dying now you maybe are thinking(oh Just choose a easy level like N.Sanity Beach) but once you get the gem for that level...it's over you can't save with that level anymore so imagine this: You are a kid and is in the later part of the game, and since is hard you Still have not gotten a single gem ever since you hit "load game" and its almost bedtime or maybe your Mom Will slap your ass If you don't get your louzy Head out of the tv, this is It, you are in the final stretch of the level and tried your best to not die...oh my god! The exit! I'm going to do It! And then with you miscalculate your jump and die... You Lost who knows 1, 2 or even 3 hours of progress. Now that some true bullshit moment. And its not even because the PS1 had limitations no! Crash 2 and Warped you could save anytime you want! So what drug from hell did the developers smoke to come up with one of the stupidest save systems ever!?

Crash 1 on the N same trilogy is significantly more forgiving than the og ps1 version, especially when collecting all the gems for 100%. On the ps1, you would need to break every box (including bonus levels in some cases) on perfect runs, if you hit a check point and died, all the boxes you broke beforehand respawn, you would have to restart the level over again. That was very alienating for gamers, especially some who may not be very experienced in platforming. So understandable why they made Cortex strikes & Warped easier at the time.

  • @aortaplatinum

A lot of the difficulty from Crash 1 came from how the save system worked. You could ONLY save or get a password if you finished a level and got it's gem. But yeah the Dark Souls comparisons were hilarious, both games are challenging but they couldn't be more different, and it really sucks that most modern games are so easy that the second most people encounter a stage or boss they can't immediately beat to the point it's just a matter of time, they'll cry and compare it to "the hardest game ever". One interesting thing about the collection that a lot of Crash diehards had issue with when it launched is that all three games use Crash 3's physics. It's a really tiny tweak, but if you ever just barely missed a jump you totally should have made in Crash 1, that's to blame. In addition, hitboxes had their edges smoothed, DingDongVG of OneyPlays had a video comparison where he showed the same actions being performed in both versions of Crash 1, but in N Sane, he would slip off the edges that PS1 Crash could nail easily. But 0/10 because you're not calling the wumpa fruit apples

Personally I agree with you sentiment that Crash 1 is the best. it has a lot of interesting quirks that the other games in the trilogy don't have. For example, one thing I noticed is that because crash 1 has the least amount of gimmicks and extras, it relies a lot more on precise, skill based challenges than the sequels. On a side note, as someone who did play the Ps1 versions, I think I have the answer as to why people often find crash 1 to be so difficult. The controls in the original are strange to say the least. Crash carries just the slightest bit of momentum with him, meaning he takes about half a second to stop, and on top of that, the jumping in that first game is all kinds of janky. Momentum is stronger in mid air than on the ground, making it harder to move forward and especially backward. In short, when you jump in the ps1 Crash 1, your ass better be sure you have the perfect trajectory to stick the landing.

The spinning high jump was also in the original Crash 2 and Warped. Also that trick will let you get the red gem easily in the second level in 2 without having to do the secret entrance since that was way lower in the original. Also the ice/oil physics in the original felt a lot better to control than the n sane Trilogy.

Based, Coco is the best. (Long comment ahead, you've been warned). Remaking these games was a tall order, the original intent was featuring cartoon characters in a "lush organic environment", so they did the best they could in that aspect I guess... but then you have the pill-shaped hitboxes. So checking out the PS1 originals too is a good idea imo especially on a nice CRT screen, I think they look just as good but definitely play better. I wish all three had the relics. And it's much more apparent there why Crash 2 is considered a huge step up from 1. The spin-slide-jump thing is also in the originals btw, they kept it cause it's fun. Crash 3 is a lot of people's favorite cause it was the only one with the relics and the characters and worlds just have so much charm. The whole Saturday morning cartoon aspect is actually a huge part of why people, me included, like Crash so much in general actually. The double jump is awful though, one of the worst I've ever seen in any game, so it's a good thing you can bypass it most of the time. The bosses are easy yeah but I think the main focus was just showcasing the goofy characters and it worked cause everyone loves them, and also they give you that much needed break. They "cut" Stormy Ascent cause it's a beta version of Slippery Climb. P.S.: if you want to keep playing the series here are _my_ versions recommendations: - Wrath of Cortex: PS2 (Greatest Hits) - Nitro Kart: Xbox (preferably 360) - Twinsanity: doesn't matter - Tag Team Racing: *NOT* PSP - Titans: 360 - Mind Over Mutant: 360 - Nitro-Fueled: *NOT* Switch (also digital is better cause of faster loading times allegedly) - Crash 4: PS5/Series X|S P.P.S.: Maybe don't do 100% for Crash 4

Yeah it generally seems to be that Crash 2 is the fan favourite nowadays, when it used to be 3 IIRC. Personally speaking, 2 is actually my least favourite. I still enjoy it a lot, but it re-uses similar level assets a lot more than 1 or 3, and it makes level tropes blend together a lot. I will say that I think it probably does secrets the best of the 3 games though, they are hidden without being too obscure, rewarding curiosity. A couple of my issues are the fact that the enemy design is generally pretty uninspired compared to Crash 1 and especially 3. And no, I'm not talking about the character designs, those are great. I mean the actual attack patterns and how they behave. Most of them just walk back and fourth, and the only thing that sets them apart is how you have to kill them. There are exceptions of course, like the vultures that fly at you, the scientists in some 2D sections that shoot rockets at you, etc. Those ones I like, because it compliments the level design and the obstacle course nature of the game. Another issue I have is while, yes the game arguably has more focus than 3, there really is only the one way to play through it. What I mean by that, is there's always one optimal way to play through the levels to get a coherent 100% experience. Which is fine, but it makes every playthrough feel too samey to me. What I like about Crash 3, is that I have so many options constantly. Should I do time trials as I play through the main story portion, should I go back to previous levels and the 6th warp room as soon as they are available or should I wait until the end of the game and revisit levels later. Should I make secret paths easier or harder on myself by going to them earlier or later with more power ups. Etc etc. That, and there's not always one clear obvious level order to go in. Sometimes it might be more beneficial to do a later stage in an area first to get a coloured gem or something. It's a tiny thing in the grand scheme, but it does a lot for replay ability IMO, and it makes each of my playthroughs stand out from the last. It also helps that the Time Twister is a lot quicker to navigate than the Warp Room in 2. On top of that though, 2 just lacks what I love about 1 and 3. 1 I enjoy for the tight and demanding platforming, while with 3 I enjoy the much more dynamic feeling level design and how the level themes feel like they are huge worlds and you are only playing a tiny portion of it, while in 1 and 2, they are simply tiny corridors that don't really feel very connected to a world. I also enjoy the enemy design and patterns since nearly every enemy has a unique way of attacking you, and it is a similar feeling of those rocket scientists in Crash 2, where it compliments the obstacle course level design. Even simple enemies like the scarabs in Tomb Wader benefit the level design, by giving you the choice of either taking it slow and easy, or risking it all by jumping on them to bypass the rising water. The time travel also just gives the game a lot more visual variety than the previous games. I also just find 2 to be the easiest of the trilogy, and honestly probably one of the easiest games in the series in general. Only exception to that being maybe Mind Over Mutant. (Yes I've played nearly all the games minus a couple spin offs) In general the Crash trilogy is fairly easy for me nowadays but either way. I just find the level design more engaging in 3, and I actually enjoy most of the gimmick levels. Time trialling 3 is also a lot more fun IMO than 1 or 2, but I'm willing to concede the fact that that part of the game doesn't click with everybody. Honestly I'm not really sure where I was going with any of this. Point is that 3 is my favourite, 1 is a fair step behind that but I still like it a lot, and while I do have a lot of issues with 2, I still really enjoy playing it. Thanks for coming to my ted talk I guess? Lmao. Have a good day random comment reader.

Damn, a Crash N.Sane review in 2022? Excelent. I always though these games were just nostalgia fuel for older people like me and many others. I grew up with a Playstation and a Crash Bandicoot collection that included the 3 games at once instead of having them in separate discs (which was cheaper in my case). It's the only game I had at the time so it was that or watching the news on TV. I'm glad it's not just nostalgia. As a kid my favorite game of the bunch was Crash 3, how things turn up. Now I don't really like it that much, for the very same reason I liked it as a kid. All those vehicle sections are just so boring for me now.. I'm in the same page as you. Most platformers suffer this "Identity Crisis" back through the 90's-early '00's were they tried a lot of goofy mechanics without really thinking if it really blended in a organic way together in a platformer. I'm more of a Crash 2 guy if you ask me, Crash 1 is so tight it doesn't leave much room for improvement. Compared to Crash 2 were yes, you can skip most of the level design but that's quite what I like about the game. Be as fast as possible in a more open scenario leaving you more space to do more crazy stuff with movement and jumps. It's kind of like Donkey Kong Country but exchange the speedy move from the roll with the jump and where are you going to land. It's weird I'm more on the less on the same page as you. I'm not much into modern games either. I tried to play the Last of Us yesterday and it was unbelievable boring for me. I couldn't stand it, characters talking meaningless things over and over, walking so slowly through corridors. Tried to play Red Dead Redemption 2, the same happen, I got bored the first mission. I was just impressed graphically by that game and the dialogues that were kind of entertaining. Nothing did effect on me even if I tried. If you liked Crash 1 you are going to probably like the new Crash 4, it's more or less a very tight platformer like Crash 1. Believe me when I say it's challenging, harder than Crash 1 I may say. You really need to play it. Thanks for this review, never though I thank someone for a review but now I do because this one speaks too close to home and specially being a non-subjective review blinded by nostalgia. Looking forward to more reviews or any projects you have in the future. Sorry if any of your eyes got offended by my grammar, not English native by any means.

24:46 The Crash N. Sane Trilogy uses the physics of Crash 3... And ironically this is a problem, because to use an example in Crash 2 Slide Jumping did give you a massive boost of speed, but spining, didn't do anything more then give you an offensive aerial capability... On the N. Sane trilogy, well, because of an ability on Crash 3, it gives more speed... Also time attack wasn't on the original Crash 1 and 2, it was added on this trilogy to then, because of how popular it was on Crash 3.

TBF, when people are talking about the difficulty of Crash 1 I think they're talking about the original PSX version. Crash 1 is probably the game that improved the most in the N Sane Trilogy, whereas a lot of people have legitimate arguments about why the original versions of Crash 2 and 3 are better. Also will be interested to hear about your opinions for Crash 4, because the game has a lot of what you like about the original Crash games (stronger focus on platforming that is more difficult than Crash 2 & 3, with no dumb minigames), however it also has aspects you don't like (namely 100% the game, which is by far the worse it's ever been in any of the Crash games and is the biggest downside of the game you'll find when talking about it with anyone).

Very good video and I respect your opinion. Here's my ranking of the games. 1. Crash 3 2. Crash 2 3. Crash 1 Kind of the opposite, I know, but I do very much enjoy all three games. Crash 2 barely ranks below Crash 3 for me. I do have nostalgia for these games, but taking that away, I do still think they're great games. There are things about Crash 3 that really get on my nerves, so I don't find it to be a perfect game, but it's my favorite game of all time (no pun intended). Playing all three games casually, they're amazing...but playing them to 100% is another story. As much as I love them, 100%ing can be very frustrating. But overall, I love these games, both the original versions and the N. Sane Trilogy.

I think people called the original ps1 Crash 1 frustrating mostly due to the stupid save system where you had to enter the bonus stage to save the game and the extra lives you collected didn't save at all. Just your level progress and gems. And the fact that in order to get a gem you couldn't die at all in a level outside of getting all the boxes. N. Sane trilogy fixed the save system and got rid of the "do not die to get a gem" thing from most of the level which made the game less frustrating.

I also think classic mega is unfun. A lot of the time gameplay just amounts to not getting hitstunned into bottomless pits, whereas parkour and combat are much more frequently separated in later titles. They also play way smoother with more controls and movement abilities.

As someone who DOES have a lot of nostalgia for these games and this series, its actually kind of surprising that I tend to differ a lot in regards to you in terms of opinions on the games. While I do like tight platformers myself quite a lot, I actually find The N.Sane Trilogy version of the game kind of feels shitty compared to the original. I swear I slip off platforms you don't in the original. I'm also of the opinion that the games get better as they go. I can see and agree to an extent that the sequels suffer a tad from what I call the B.U.C.A.B.I. effect, but at least to me I feel that in contrast, the first game instead feels like it doesn't evolve enough for my taste. Though that might be because I played Crash 1 afterwards so it just ended up feeling like a downgrade. I remember when the N.Sane trilogy came out and everyone was talking about constantly dying and making Dark Souls comparisons, and my reaction was "this is news?" . Like, I wouldn't say the games are necessarily even dark souls tier. Its just that dying a lot to me has always been part of the expected experience of playing the game. they even have a litany of death animations as if to say they knew you would be dying a lot. While I very much like the characters of Crash, I personally find myself struggling to remember most of the bosses, which is probably not a good sign. The ones I remember most are the ones in Crash 2 and 3 like Tiny, Dingodile and N.Gin. It usually takes me a bit to remember even guys like Pinstripe. I find Nina from Twinsanity more memorable than most of the Crash 1 cast. Tawna in particular straight up gets memory holed for most of the series harder than Launch in Dragon Ball. While I would put the Crash games above Mario 64, I dunno if I would put them above the Sonic Adventures or Heroes. Don't wanna pressure you or anything, but do you plan on talking about the Jak games in the future?

The slide spin seems to be an N. Sane addition, as the OG 2 did not have that. That being said, I think Crash 1 and 2's level designs are about the same in terms of difficulty, it really does come down to control between the two. Crash 1's control's as many people have pointed out are very janky. 2 despite having the extra slide and jump did have moments of "skill check" to make sure you really knew how to do these moves so the stages were designed with those moves in mind.

I can agree that Crash 2 and 3 are definitely not nearly as tightly designed around the abilities, but I still love those games (Crash 2 especially, I’m honestly not the biggest fan of Crash 3) for that reason. To me, it’s really no different than the spamdash in Sonic Adventure 1 and P-06. Tho for my money, the slide-spin-jump and what not are not nearly as OP as the spindash in SA1 because (at least in Crash 2) you are still playing the level. The spindash flat out lets you essentially skip entire stages in SA1. I think it’s perfect in P-06 because it still feels really fun and OP to use but it isn’t nearly as strong as the one in SA1. But yeah with the slide-spin-jump in Crash 2, it’s not like you can fling yourself to the end of the level with just two or three of those lol. But I can understand where you are coming from and it’s a big reason I think Crash 4 is by far the best Crash game because it combines the difficulty of Crash 1 and the extra abilities of Crash 2 and ramps them up to 11.

Find it interesting how many peoples in the comments get the OG Crash 1 saving absolutely wrong. This is it done right: There's a bonus round around every two levels or so which saves your level unlocking progress, should you reach the end - plus interestingly these are not technically necessary to even complete for 100%, SAD FACT I GUESS - but it makes 100% easier to achieve. Now, getting a GEM or a KEY also makes you save, but this only records a fact that you have now this item (SOURCE: NTSC-U/C MANUAL, read it peoples), no level progress is saved with those. Plus none of the Bonus Rounds are necessary for a GEM in the original, in this insanity version they actually are for some reason now required in its iteration of Crash 1. Though you TECHNICALLY CAN DIE, but you have to do so BEFORE ANY CHECKPOINTS ARE BROKEN, that still counts to GEM getting. Though in Japan, you can die anytime, but still you need to get back to break all the re-appeared boxes. So all this means that if (in the OG) ye haven't played any of the saving Bonus Rounds and instead get to the final level you can get a GEM on and then get and save that fact, thinking "o yea" - well it's back to the very start of the game for you. I have a playthrough like that with passwords shown one can use to try oneself to see that this mad man here is 100% (heh) correct here, any and each password I show the viewer before reaching 100% starts you at the first level (not doing any saving bonus rounds it makes it jump from 35% to 100% when you get the last gem, only exception to GEM not saving things rule, as 100% permanently unlocks those final two levels finally without you having to reach them manually). FINAL NOTE: Save system is not that bad. I'll die on this hill if I have to.

I feel the same way about the original Spyro trilogy, in the sense that, the game it's at is best when it's just a normal level. The minigames are definitely the worst part of Spyro. That's why the original Spyro game is the best of all, similar to the Crash trilogy (I also think that just considering the levels per se and not the minigames, Spyro 1 is absolutely superior to the other two). PS: Do a Spyro review, please.

Nobody forces you to use the slide glitch. I love when games let me break them a bit. The game is still difficult. Your ability is not average. Its like saying: I’m 1.90 but for me thats not tall because I’m used to it” but everybody is around 1.75 or less. Your reasoning on that is weird. I agree with the gimmick levels, they take away from the core gameplay and are quite average. Crash 2 is my fave, perfect difficulty and balance between classic and new. 1 is too difficult and a bit samey. 3 I like it but hate the sea levels and driving ones 😂

Good video but I disagree on the difficulty because kids won’t keep doing the same thing over and over if they keep dying, eventually they’ll lose patience and play some other game which means they might not recommend the game to their friends giving Sony more money. Also I felt that crash 2 was difficult enough to where it wasn’t frustrating (Apart from that fucking bee level and the ice one with the stones that crush you) and it felt satisfying to beat a hard level instead of just being glad it was over. Also they nerfed crash 1s difficulty in Nsane so that it was reasonable, the og was low-key bullshit.
