Zelda 1 Review - Hot Take: This Game is Good

Ойындар

Yup. I'm turning "Was Always Good" into my thing when I do a big video series covering a single franchise. I know it makes no sense for Zelda, or anything else outside the context of Sonic. This is no longer me trying to make an argument against a popular notion. But that's why I like it. It's going to confuse people. And I find that funny. And long after I stop doing Sonic videos, the og Pariah fans will be the only ones who understand why my videos are called that.
btw, I have no idea how this game is supposed to be displayed. Most old games did not render at a 4:3 aspect ratio. They actually were narrower, then stretched to 4:3. And many games accounted for this stretch in the art, to look correct. Zelda 1 however, is inconsistent with its art. Some things are perfect squares or circles before being stretched. Others only after. So it seems they didn't yet fully grasp the 4:3 stretch concept at this time, resulting in some things always looking wrong one way or the other.
I'm sure anyone familiar with this game noticed the many changes Zelda Redux makes to the original game. Fast item switching, arrows, no rupee cap, etc. Lots of nice changes and improvements all over. I believe the original game didn't even have cracks showing where to bomb or which trees could be burned. How were you supposed to find most of those things? Just bomb everything? Seems like you could easily run into problems of running out of bombs like that. Just another issue with grinding for resources.

Only watched this first 8 mins so far but wanted to get this point off my chest: Zelda 1 is not a game designed to be played without outside tools. The original game came with a very detailed manual and complete map of Hyrule, and this is what Nintendo expected every player to have going in. The manual explains every item, guides you to the first 3 dungeons, strongly hints at the next 3, and generally gives you a bunch of tips for getting a lay of the land. The map was also annotated with clues and points of interest without actually spoiling anything. They were both extremely well done, though Miyamoto would also encourage kids to give the game a shot without relying too much on them if they wanted to challenge themselves. Zelda 1 isn’t really a complete playable experience without them; it doesn’t even have any item descriptions or control hints. The fact that new versions of the game don’t include the map or manual has single-handedly nuked Zelda 1’s reputation with first-time players, since they lack any way of gaining their bearings. I bought a cartridge of the game years ago and could never bring myself to play it for more 30 mins before giving up. Suddenly, after picking up the manual, I became hopelessly obsessed with it and now it’s one of my absolute favourites to blast through in a day. I’d highly recommend looking up the map and manual to get a feel for what it was like to play the game back in its original 1980s context.

yeah it also was a watercooler type talk to your friends about it game, which doesn't really translate to current times, unless you could convince some friends who never played it to go through it at the same time as you.. sure you can look up stuff online but getting some info from a friend who is also stumbling through the world and then going and trying it was quite different.

Yes, one thing that's important to remember when playing games before like the 6th gen is that you NEED the manual for almost every one. This was fine and made sense with the first through fourth gens, since cartridge space didn't really allow for a tutorial in addition to the game, and because everyone was so used to how arcades did it, with a "here's a simple explanation through the attract mode, or maybe a moves list on the physical cabinet, but otherwise figure it out bitch" approach, but then once discs came around and console gaming was starting to eclipse arcades, there's no excuse to make a player rely on a paper manual. I prefer older games for the most part, but in-game tutorials was absolutely a smart move that should have been a thing in every game since the PS1 and Saturn.

I think your comment about not looking to immerse yourself in a game and caring more for arcadey/old stuff perfectly sums up my thoughts on modern gaming in general. Even with someone like me that cares a lot about story and writing in games, I feel like the focus on immersion and spectacle kind of takes away from the medium rather than plays to its strength, at least in the vast majority of cases. I found myself steering a lot more in favor towards older-style games, such as old-school shooters, platformers, rpgs, etc. In a way I think the layer of disconnect you will inevitably get allows for more natural sort of immersion, rather than just walking around a gorgeous looking spectacle, you're forced to actively engage with the world and the way it works through its mechanics, there's more of a personal connection there as you form your own unique experiences through playing the game, rather than what a team of a hundred designers *want* you to feel when playing the game. I think that's kind of the beauty of games as an artform in a way, where even some very linear games can be an entirely different experience for nearly everyone who plays. There's just something inherently more interesting in engaging with a space that has that sort of gamey feel to it. It's something only really games can do, but since AAA gaming wants to mimic movies as hard as they can, what makes games special kinda gets lost. It's what makes returning to these old games or the more recent indie gems I've discovered so rewarding and more engaging to me. Tangent aside, great video as always!

You're absolutely right, and the reason why Nintendo keeps making "perfect" games to this day is because they are treating games as toys, not just as products, they take years to polish small details just to make the game feel responsive to the Player's inputs, they essentially don't care about aesthetic, plot and characters until the game itself is done. People don't love Mario because he is a italian plumber, they love him simply because his games are fun. Even if Nintendo is letting the "decoration" of the game aside, they still need to make their games look like spectacles, which is when they analyse their game and try to add an art-style which will make it look appealing to what it is. They simply put the Game first.

People often tend to forget that most of these NES GAMES that had "no direction" actually had directions, story, purpose, tips and tricks that came in the Manual, such is the case for Zelda 1. The manual was part of the product you were buying, ppl often ignore those when playing these games nowadays, however that is incorrect, you should be playing with the manual, that was the intended experience for the game.

Now that I've finished the video, I highly, highly recommend the indie game Tunic. It takes the same Metroidvania progression concept as Zelda 1 but dials it up to 11 (including game manual pages as a key collectable like the manual this game was intended to be played with). Some of the puzzles are the craziest I've seen in any game, and solving them was some of the most fun I've had in a game in a long time.

i think the currency problem is actually because of the way zelda redux patched it. you see, in the original game, the rupees actually worked as the same as arrows, so every time you shot an arrow, you spent a rupee. that way the loot the enemies dropped were rupees as well instead of arrows, so you had more rupees, but you also had to manage if you wanted to spend rupees on using the bow or keep them for after in the game. also the secret cave entrances weren't supposed to be visible on plain sight. the idea was for the players to share the entrances they found with other players, so they could and help one another, and that way also avoid the ones where you lost your rupees (or troll other people). finally, i wanted to say as for the first complaint on the video, i used a hand drawn map for my playtrough of both zelda as for the first metroid, and i found the playtrough a lot more fun and "adventure like" that way, so i would recommend blind players, if they have the time and patience, to try doing it for themselves, its very gratifying. after all, i think this game was meant to be played outside the box as well, and that's part of the charm of really old nes and arcade games.

About why Link can't move freely and is restricted to a grid: My guess is that it makes collision easier, both for the players and the programmers. Then you don't get stuck on a wall because you're one pixel off and it makes dodging enemies more predictable, I think (except projectiles). Moving diagonally probably wouldn't mesh (haha) well with the grid-like structure either because square root of 2 is irrational, so you wouldn't move exactly the same speed as when moving in the four cardinal directions. I agree that fighting darknuts is tough under these limitations, but I like that. When you're in a room filled with knights, killing them all would be very hard. Maybe the idea was to play reactively, as in avoiding them for a while and waiting for your time to strike. I think it works well, but it's different from how the gameplay normally works. Again, it's similar to Dark Souls. Indeed, Ocarina of Time has invincibility frames during rolls, so maybe that's where that came from.

Zelda 1 is a game that is the sum of its experiences and that is something I feel a lot of people misunderstand. Beyond other comments already mentioning you were meant to play this game with the manual and map at your side, there's also the fact people try and break this game down into a linear progression of dungeons, and it simply does not work that way. Dungeons eventually became the calling card and defining feature of Zelda games for sure, but it's always equally been about the space in between as well. Progression isn't just finding the next cave to trundle through for a key item and a heart piece, its findng the swords, its finding secret spots for rupees and munitions and heart containers, its the entire adventure as a whole. Speaking of, did you know Zelda 1 has a deceptively fantastic progression system hidden in plain sight? Enemies when defeated in a sequence without Link taking damage drop progressively better items (different enemies have different loot tables). This means the more efficiently you defeat enemies, the more money you make more quickly. The more money you make, the easier you are to afford things that in turn make fighting enemies easier and easier - the Blue Ring. Bombs to blow up caves to find hearts. More hearts lets you get better swords. Better swords lets you kill enemies better and better without breaking your loot tempo. It's a gorgeous thing that goes highly unappreciated by the playerbase at large.

On Diagonal movement: Dan Felder made a video on Zelda 1's design and he argued that, due to limitations of the game, it would be impossible to convey things flying or being on different planes of movement in Zelda 1, so things like bats and the boomerang were given diagonal movement to imply their freedom of movement in comparison to link and the grounded enemies. It still doesn't excuse the fact it's pretty annoying but at least that's a good reason

Your guess is correct about why Metroid and Castlevania got the honor of the metroidvania naming scheme - while Zelda does share a lot of elements with metroidvania-style design, it specifically is not one, because the 2D platformer playstyle is an integral part of the term's definition. Were that not the case, there are a lot of games we don't call metroidvanias that would be considered part of the genre; heck, if we're trying to discover which came first, early text adventure games like Zork would take that title from Zelda anyway.

The term Metroidvania comes from fans trying to describe how Symphony of the Night's gameplay differed from the previous stage based castlevanias. Symphony of the Night's creators though specified that they based the exploration and progression systems on Zelda, but since Metroid was a platformer, it is the one that got included in the slang.

I think there are quite a few things that make a Metroidvania what it is that Zelda doesn't have, but amongst them, that 2D platforming element is probably the biggest offender. This is why you're more likely to see people refer to Zelda II as one instead of any of the other Zelda games.

  • @defaultxr
    @defaultxr5 ай бұрын

The likely reason you can't move diagonally but enemies can is because collision detection and response is surprisingly complex and difficult to program, particularly back in this era. There are so many edge cases when it comes to detecting whether something is colliding/intersecting with another object, and if it is, how that fact should be responded to. It's easier to say "if the player is intersecting with this wall, push them out the nearest side, and then you're done." If they're intersecting with two walls (which is a lot easier to do when you can move diagonally) then which wall should they be pushed out of first, and in what direction? If you pick the wrong wall and/or the wrong direction, you can push the player towards a different wall, and push them INSIDE of it. I don't think it's necessarily an inherent limitation of the NES hardware, but I think it was probably a limitation of the game itself, i.e. there is already slowdown sometimes when a lot of enemies are on screen. So they probably just prioritized diagonal movement lower than the rest of the game's design. Most of the enemies that move diagonally don't actually respond to collisions with solid objects. That's why they can move diagonally. They simply don't need to run collision detection and respond to collision for those enemies. Source: I have programmed collision detection and response from scratch myself. It's not easy :) Not sure if someone else already answered this, but I skimmed the top comments and didn't see anyone talking about it.

I'm a big fan of both Zeldalikes and Metroidvanias, and yeah, they don't play any differently from one another. The difference between a Zeldalike and a Metroidvania is just whether it's top view or side view. In 3D, there would be no difference, but only one game has managed to do it right in 3D so far that I'm aware of (Blue Fire). Plenty of Zeldas & Metroids have tried, but they keep making them too linear (or in the case of Breath of the Wild, too open; it's a delicate balance). It's a very superficial difference between a Zeldalike & a Metroidvania, but plenty of other game genre distinctions have done the same. Look at first person shooters and third person shooters, for example. They play identically, but are considered to be two different genres. There are other changes between what you've played and the original besides the map visibility. In the original game, arrows and rupees weren't separate things. Nothing ever dropped arrows... You had to buy an arrow once to use the bow, but every shot fired spent a rupee. (I like to imagine an arrow shaped rupee launcher, with no arrow head, that clips to the bow and puts all the momentum into the rupee that Link put on it when pulled back and released... but I know that's not canon.) Also, the original game didn't mark what walls were bombable or what trees were burnable. You had to try every wall and tree manually... But from the manual you'd at least know that no screen had more than one entrance to something. "There's no Master Sword" - Technically correct, but when upgrading your sword, you get "Master using it and you can have this". I feel like this is the origin of the term that Link to the Past then adapted to be the Master Sword, which starts off looking a lot like the White Sword from this game. I'm not saying that the White Sword is the Master Sword... It's not... I'm saying it's likely the inspiration behind it. Minish Cap is the next game to actually call a sword the White Sword...

Glad to see you tackling the Zelda series as well as I do consider it to be one of if not my favorite franchises as well (good taste with Kirby too). You offered me a new perspective with botw by saying it extrapolated different things from the original game and took it in a different direction. I actually quite enjoy the original game and have played it over countless times thanks to it's brevity. Which is why it always sort of irritated me when people said botw is just like tloz so that's why I don't like the former (when really I don't like botw because I don't consider it a zelda game myself, I also do not like modern open world game design). When I think much of tloz is a lot more similar to the other games in the franchise with how it handles exploration and progression. However if alttp is extrapolating more out of the progression aspect of the original and the franchise cultivated it's identity off of that more. Botw is scrapping progression entirely to try and extrapolate all it can out of the exploration aspect of the original. Essentially it's like a series reset but the cultivated identity of this reset was taken to the opposite extreme of SS far too quickly imo. This video, without it even being the focus gave me a new perspective on the latest "zelda" entry, even if I am still not particularly a fan of it.

BoTW is a Zelda game, every Zelda game tried to change the formula a good amount, it's just BoTW changed it a bit too much (which is far too substansial of a change for a person to ignore) for the linear-type fans. I haven't played any 2D Zelda games except A Link to The Past and some of the 3D's but BoTW is still my favourite due to it's vast world literally carries everything that's bad in my opinion. It's not the general formula but I think I'm more of an open world game person.

@flint from mother 3 gaming of course, it's technically a Zelda game in name alone. However I personally don't consider it a Zelda game due to how much of a departure it is from the franchise as it was known for 30 years, it's something completely different. I've played every Zelda game multiple times even Zelda 2 (the only true outlier imo). I don't necessarily agree that the Zelda games tried to change the formula with each game, rather, they tried to add to it. However I'm glad you enjoy botw, many do, just happens to be low on the bar for me. I do notice a pattern though. Lots of people that are not very familiar with Zelda tend to hold botw as their favorite. Not a bad thing but it goes to show just how much of a different game it is. It certainly drew in an audience that otherwise did not particularly like Zelda as it existed, or at the very least did not care for it all too much.

Was pleasantly surprised about hearing you comparing this game to Binding of Isaac, since this was my reaction as well upon seeing the dungeons of Zelda 1 for the first time. Since you've played Rebirth, a couple of questions. Did you play it with or without DLCs? How far did you get into it? ...Do you plan to cover this game as well? (I feel like it's probably a bit too much, 100% completion of it could take a long while.)

Fascinating. I really enjoyed this video, despite disagreeing with you on almost every point and criticism. To me the utter lack of direction was a positive. Coming to know the overworld like the back of your hand with no in-game map to help you was a challenge. Also, the original game came with a fold-up paper map of * most * of the overworld, leaving chunks blank for you to add your own scribblings/notes on, something you obviously didn't have (short of trying to reproduce it with your printer or somesuch). If Darknuts and Wizrobes weren't so unpredictable, the game's combat would be total joke in 80% of the rooms instead of about 50%, although you're correct in the the Wizrobe-heavy Dungeon (Level 5? 6?) is pretty infamous for being just... not fun. We also LOVED the second quest, figuring out the new "push on the wall to walk through" gimmick, finding the new Dungeon entrances, figuring out where the good shops and the Blue Ring had been moved to... it was something totally unheard of at the time. Usually if you beat an NES game and started a new run, the game either stayed the same or just got harder (CastleVania, for instance). Having a "remixed" game was mind-blowing for 1986. I know a lot of this is rose-tinted nostalgia talking - my dad bought the game brand-new from the local ShopKo and we played the absolute shit out of it for MONTHS back in '86. Still my favorite Zelda game (followed closely by Link's Awakening).

I got around the need for griding by working it into my travels or runs through the dungeons. I'd battle what I could along the way while trying to progress, and that would get me enough to afford things. They would also cost deaths, sure, but in a game as hard as this I didn't have much incentive to care about my death count anyways. For example, each game over in Death Mountain was a step towards Ganon and as a bonus gave me the money to buy more potions.

In terms of the “why is there an economy” question - there ~are~ ways to score rupees way faster. There are hidden moblins that give you secret rupee bonuses, as well as certain places to gamble your rupees if you want more. (There are also people who take a fee for burning their door down, lol.) I feel it provides greater room to get rupees for both required items (bait, the bow, etc) while also giving the player choices how they want to customize their load out (potions, the blue ring, so forth.) also, arrows were tied to your rupee count in the original It’s not the greatest system, farming rupees from ghinis definitely happens but there *are* workarounds instead of the only option being to grind. :) (Saving the big moblin payouts for the ring, yknow?)

Something to note was that the Zelda 1 instruction booklet provided a very detailed guide of the first two dungeons of the game, and also gave the locations to the 3rd and 4th dungeons. A discussion more reserved for game preservation, honestly. But one could argue that some ports of the game are functionally incomplete without the instruction booklet.

32:06 The Darknuts are programmed so that there is an invisible 'mirror' of Link on the opposite side of the screen. The Darknuts will go for either you, or that shadow of you. Also, there's a very tactical way of fighting Darknuts. They ALWAYS have to turn on a whole tile. So you can safely stab them once when they're transitioning between tiles.

I'd be curious to see a review of "BS Zelda" (aka Third/Fourth Quest) from you. These are the official, but Japan-exclusive, SNES remakes of Zelda 1. They address many of the problems the original had and generally feel more guided, like a cross between Z1 and LttP of sorts. Would be interesting to know what you think about the changes made in those games.

It's kinda interesting how Zelda 1 and Metroid 1 are kinda similar. While I'm not into Zelda 1 from how it looks like it's mostly a much better game than Metroid 1 it seems like(Metroid 2 really is the start of how good that franchise can be imo tho Metroid 1 isn't that bad either. Especially if you have a map). I think you answered your own question on why Metroidvania is the name of the genre tho. It basically is 2D platforming with huge worlds(That's why most people are confused to call games like Metroid Prime Metroidvanias tho I think 3D also should count.). Outside of that I'm not fully sure what causes Metroid to be seen as the first. Metroid basically is if we combine Mario and Zelda with 2D shooters. And that is the essence of Metroidvania I guess. Zelda+Mario. Edit: Also funny enough I would thought that if Zelda 1 ever got a remake it would be like Metroid:Zero Mission. Where it in outside seems like it abonded what the original game was going for but as you continue playing and realizing what the game actually hints you what you can do you realize they balanced the idea of making the og game like rest of the series while still regaining what it all was but just being better.

If you haven't already, you might want to have a look at The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap overall it *is* a linear Zelda game, but the combat is fairly challenging (especially in the final dungeon, good god) and aside from optional content (figurine collection grind in particular), the only major complaint people tend to have with it is that it's a bit on the shorter side with only 6 main dungeons. Even though it was made after Wind Waker, it's not afraid to put up a fight. I can't exactly give you a rating on the puzzles though since they can definitely be challenging both to figure out and to actually do in a number of cases, but largely all the hidden intuitive stuff is a bunch of caves that you don't really start seeing until you begin your approach on the second dungeon and onwards, so up to you if you like that or not.

Man, the redux really does seem like an easy mode, huh? Shows you where to place bombs, makes the map for you, give you separate arrows, a more generous attack angle... That's just the stuff I notice in the beginning, too. I think Zelda 1 is best played knowing what the items do, how to get bombs, and knowing that almost every single map screen has a secret as outside knowledge. The rest I feel is best to get from your own notes and maps, either mental, physical or digital. Personally, everything clicked once I heard about how almost each map screen had a secret, and how uneven walls cannot house them. I then went around bombing everywhere that made sense, and slowly became more familiar with the map in the process. If I had played redux, I don't think I would have had that same level of satisfaction in playing through it.

You can customize Redux to undo many of its changes. As I said in the video, I did another playthrough afterward. And I removed a lot of the features to get something closer to the original game. And it was definitely better. I'll talk about that in the Zelda 2 video, as that has the same deal.

Really my bigger issue with the Red Potion thing is more how Zelda 1 doesn't fully refill your health when you die so you end up wanting to find a way to fill refill it every time you do. As for grinding point, I DO agree the currency balance in Zelda 1 is off but I do not agree with the argument made against the system's inclusion. The fact that grinding is boring is itself a deterrent from doing it, so saying it is objectively the best thing to do is illogical to me. it implies that your boredom and use of your time is not as valuable as the mere act of getting the tunic asap. Grinding systems are actually good when the baseline experience of playing the game is reasonable because it means the player has another means of trying to make the process of overcoming the game smoother alternative to just hitting their head against a brick wall if they so choose. For this I find the demonization of such systems to be rather shortsighted. Overall very much enjoyed the video. Zelda 1 is actually my fave game in the series! Rupees economy is actually something the series continues to struggle with for decades. So it's worth noting that you bring it up here.

Surprisingly, I don't think it would be a hard game to modernise at all. They already got a lot of things right. And apparently there was a Zelda 1 remake in the works. I forgot what replaced it, but would love it.
