Salt & Tar: Ep.248- Home is Where the Boat Is (Swab Cameo, oh, and we're Sober)
We travel back to the states to see Swab and renew our visas. To prep the boat to be left alone for over a week we soup everything. Feels so good to call Rediviva home and to return to Mexico refreshed and sober. Without going to personal, yes, we are currently not drinking and feeling much better internally. Maybe one day we'll be able to share more on this but for now we simply share our decision to quit drinking. We appreciate your support and understanding.
Thanks for watching!
p.s. I try and reply to as many comments as I can but we are still so so busy so please do not take it personally 💕

I used to think that the only way to validate a fun activity was by including alcohol. It's hard to explain but it was a fear of missing out. When I stopped using alcohol, I found that any truly fun activity was still fun without being drunk or buzzed. As I look back on my life, I realize that many events of my life would have been better if I hadn't made alcohol a primary focus. If you are successful in stopping or moderating, I think you will enjoy life just fine especially enjoying the lifestyle that you've worked so hard to build.

Well I basically stopped drinking for 20yrs because my ex-wife is a drunk in recovery as well as a drug and alcohol counselor so now after the divorce I've resumed occasionally drinking. We remain good friends
By the way, on the sober front, my wife and I call those efforts “tapping the brakes”, just to make sure they still work.

Lots of nice hikes above the hill nearby. Also the monastery is an interesting historical area
Kudos to you all for realizing Swab was ready to retire to a life of ease. That’s a tough decision for anyone to make but it’s clear that he is enjoying the relaxation.

Hey I am an old man now and just need you both to know. been watching from the beginning. you have made me dream. Love ya!
Is it just me or does sobriety come with a whole new energy level and attitude? You seem to laugh and smile more. Good for you!

@@SaltandTarIf there is shame and self loathing tied to the drinking, it is time for a sobriety check for sure. That is a definite sign there might be a problem with the drinking. Good for you guys for recognizing that there was an issue and taking the steps on your own to take a positive step. I realized I had an issue with alcohol control many many years ago together with my party pal and wife, and we have only gotten drunk two or three times in the past 25 years. Turns out we still get carried away if we get to the buzzed stage, so we just say no (or no thank you) when it's offered. Seems you guys can still have plenty of fun without it, and the visit home (homes) went well and productive. It was awesome to see swab's excitement to see his grandparents, and you guys too, as well as his return to his retirement home. Not sure how I'm going to feel seeing bright colors flying above Red Aviva for sails, but if they help her move in light winds, then they are a means to an end, I suppose. She's just so beautiful flying all those beautiful white sheets. See you guys on the next episode.

Drinking is so fun till it’s not! You guys are so awesome good call taking a time out or more if that’s where it goes. I took a year off from drinking at 23, 33, &43. Finally surrendered at age 50 and 12 years later it is just not a thing. Sail on !
Good ole swab. i loved to watch him crunching through the snow
Swabbie was so happy to see the 'Pack Mates' of his youth. I agree he's more comfortable on land now, and he's with people who know and love him...
Just what the Dr. ordered, a break from too much partying, a family visit, score some sails and needed upgrades...purrrfect
No, look, something is wrong!! I am a fully grown, 59-year-old male... Why are my eyes leaking watching your Swab reunion? I DEMAND a pre-warning for any such future episodes... or I will not click the like button!!! Damn I bet you are scared now!! Love Swab!!!!
Happy you spent some good times with Swab!! Great trip and am looking forward to seeing you sail with your brother!! So cool Fair winds ⛵️
Bravo guys! And kudos for taking some time away from alcohol. No explanation necessary. Take care of yourselves.
ALWAYS good to see Swab, after all he IS a Plank owner. As to the sober bit, always do it because you want to, not due to the Have to. Important to know the difference.
A bitter sweet reunion wit Swab!
I cruised sober, you can do it , 34 yrs. ODAAT
Saw y’all flew SkyWest out of Mexico. Retired from them. Was a maintenance technician for them, mostly in quality control. Was cool to see that.
Nothing wrong with voluntary sobriety. I haven't touched a drop in almost twenty years. (A necessary decision.) All respect/never any judgement.
So happy that you're off the booze. I remember that sudden clean feeling in my body from 35 years ago. That is so powerful that I never got back to drinking! I've been following you for years, and several times I wished that sober kick for you two. And yes, I realize that there can be more reasons to get on the wagon, but the decision itself is great, and good for sailors! ❤❤

Thanks for sharing 💓 35 years and counting, that's amazing. We're feeling much better these days R
I love to see Swab. Thank you for brightening my week with your show.
Your videos are the simply the best for a person like me, I learn a little whilst enjoying watching two happy people enjoy their 'younger' years in a sensible and positive way. Thank you.
It's funny, I'm a pilot and work in the airplane building industry so my feelings are opposite of Garrett. Being out in deep water is terrifying to me and I feel free and thrilled to be in the air! Whatever the preference, though, I'm grateful we have the means to make these amazing vessels to travel and see the world through new perspectives.
Spent my 20s drinking pretty regularily and over doing it more often than I would have liked. The year I turned 30 I took a break from alcohol for the year. Didnt plan on it or anything just wanted to see how long I could keep dry january going. Discovered some good non alcoholic beers and one month lead to another. Its been a few years since than while I have chosen to partake again, it definately changed my attitudes toward drinking. It was like a reset. I rarely have more than one or two in a sitting anymore and I'll often opt for a near beer over the high octane stuff. Congratulations on your adventures in sobriety whatever that looks like for you.🎉
SWAAAAABIIIIEEEEEE!
Sobriety works well for you guys, hope it sticks well for you. I've often wondered (hard to see in edited vids tho) if you guys were leaning into the sauce a bit too much. But signs were still to be seen, here and there mainly subtle. I'm glad you decided to give it a go, good luck with it. Maybe it will stick for ya. Swab seemed glad to see you two. Best regards.
Love all of your posts, but it is wonderful to see Swab living the good life with your sister. Great trip, saw family and picked up your plunder.
Seeing Swab made my day. His laid back character brings back so many memories. I am so happy that you got to spend time with family.
Home is where the anchor drops!
Can't wait to see you fill that spinnaker!
Great to see Swab and family. Two sails to tryout. To new paths and destinations.
Yea when your sober for a few weeks, months, your perspective of life changes... This July 14th marks my 21st year being sober. PRAISE GOD!!!! If I had kept drinking I would have been dead with in a short time. After a few months my so called friends didn't want me around any more. They didn't like seeing me happy and spending time enjoying the funner things in life that now I could afford to have or do them... Staying sober wasn't easy at first but I found a group of like minded people that have helped me over the years..... So happy to see Swab. I love you kids and as always praying for you... Be blessed in Jesus name... BBE..

@@SaltandTar That's right.,.. I found a better way to live. Happy, joyous, and FREE!!!!!
I can't believe it's been 8 years. I can remember somewhat (only somewhat) offering to sail as a hand with you, claiming I could cook, when you were still building in Washington. What a great adventure!
The good ship, Rediviva. Take care of yourselves.
As the humans to a 20 and a 13 year old dogs, we love to see Swab. Thank you for brightening our week with your show.
I been sober 29 years now. I do ah week every week.
Every kid needs a dog every dog needs a kid
Welcome home..I too always am stoked for times returning to my home..especially so when home has been a labor of true luv
Awww Swabby! ❤
She looks ready to cross oceans. 😍
You did the right thing for Swab!
Lifestyle decisions are hard. Please accept my heartfelt admiration in this endeavor.
sobriety seems like a good call when youre living this kind of life honestly lol
Good job on the sobriety folks. There is a life on the other side. Hope to meet you when we splash in couple of month in Guaymas.
its so good to see swab!
Bet you guys aren't missing that snow around the shed you-all built the boat
You've had the completion Party. Glad you are going home for a visit before going to sea. Happy you are choosing sobriety during the day. BUT, a drink at the end of the day is okay, and drinks with friends.
Great video. So nice to see your family, especially Swab. Thanks for taking us along with you. (Nice haircut!) 😎👍❤️❤️❤️
The boat looks excellent! Delighted to see you two enjoying time aboard on the water.

Great episode. Some time with loved ones is always food for the soul.
We all mis SWAB. Look how HAPPY he is seeing everyone.
Good to see y'all enjoying life and getting to see Swab, he's he looks to be doing well. thanks for sharing. ♥
I don't even know how. The episodes keep getting better. Like how?? And it's so true. Eff running out and being sober. Gad the dreams.
3:09 more of this please 😛
So happy for the Swab update!!! Love you videos, thx so much for sharing your adventures
I think it's absolutely beautiful boat
Kisses and hugs to swab. He is such a nice and friendly dog ❤❤❤❤❤
Good ‘ol Swab. He knew where you were going. Good stuff. Can’t believe you left the boat in Mexico for 10 days. What? You must be high. Keep it coming. Love watching you kids living the good life. Swab’s pissed you left again.
Sobriety suits you ! You have both lost weight and look younger and healthier !
well if that dont make ya smile to see the band back together nothing will hello swab xxx
Good ship indeed. Swab looked really happy to be with you both. Thanks for the video.
17:05 Dads pin map is awesome, can't wait to see those pins across the Pacific.
A great video guys! It was wonderful to see Swab and your family. Having been a professional pilot for 50 years I hate riding in the back of an airplane. 😁🛫
I'm so glad I got to see swab❤
Good times. Whenever I have traveled to Mexico I think I had a beer or tequila within about 5 minutes of arrival but it doesn’t have to be that way. The weather alone is all I need 🎉🎉🎉
Good for You & yer “Refresh”👍 Cruising has a downside…Making new friends, seeing old friends, But never sure if you won’t see again in months years or NEVER☹️ A family visit, even occasionally is probably essential…Continue to Stay Safe and Enjoy😎
Swab we love you mate in Australia cheers n beers Marty
Congratulations on y’all’s sobriety!!! That’s cool. Been 25 years since I last had a drink, the best 25 years of my life. Love the videos guys, keep on keeping on!!! Fair winds and following seas👍✌️
Great to see you both, I just had to part with my bulldog Roxy, 2 days ago, after 11 years, taking her to the vet and staying with her wile it happened was the hardest thing I have ever done, I'm smiling for the first time watching your video, there is a great happiness in your videos, it is my escape, thankyou, God bless
Well, it's finally happened. I just finished binge watching every video from the beginning. I'm so proud of what you two have accomplished. Congratulations guys, you've more than earned it.
Oh, how I agree Garrett. Flying is something I'd be more easier with, if I was born with wings. I've seen too many aircraft call out of the sky. Also, I have learned a perfect phrase that I can share with the two of you. "Nobody ever died from the lack of alcohol. I've been dry for about 20 years. Keep up the healthy life. Vernon
It was so amazing meeting and hanging out with all you guys. I look forward to the next time our paths cross.
As long as you were happy drunks, I don't see the problem. Really glad that Red came thru with flying colors! Poor swab, missing the fun!
Thanks for sharing ❤
Thanks for all the swab time.
Love yalls channel. I dread flying too. Keep filmimg because yall are real and a great couple. I been married to my high school sweetheart for 46t years. Nothing like a real friend.
