From a sailor of 40 years. A sailboat with an engine, its break would be its reverse and hard reverse for emergency stop . A stern line is definitely useful in many occasions, as long as the slip is not shorter than the LOA of the boat. Automotive paints and parts are incredibly durable. They take more abuse than boats. Autos are in snow, road salt, sand, mud, water, etc etc. I painted my fiberglass boat Acrylic Enamel Auto paint, it lasted me 27 years and still looks like it's brand new after I sold my boat.

What a lot of people just don't get is the only difference between "automotive" an "marine" application is price. I worked for a long time involved in orthopedic surgical procedures and noticed early on the only difference between a construction drill or drill bit and surgical drills and bits is the price.

Nonesense, marine grade and home grade are 2 completely different things, going extra and comparing cheap stainless to implant rated titanium is even more silly. There are 50 different kinds of stainelss on the market, 50 kind of alloy magnesium/aluminum, etc., they are not all the same.

That driveline system is perfectly fine and you have proven the same. I had a similar issue with the starter circuit on a production boat equipped with a 2GM Yanmar. My solution was to install a simple relay in the engine bay that directly pulled power from the starter hot post and relayed same to the starter solenoid post. Existing wiring only had to control the relay which took very little amps, so very little voltage loss. At the same time I installed a remote start button in the engine bay that also triggered the new relay, which was very handy at times. JIC your setup gives you any more issues you might consider a relay setup. Fair winds and following seas!

I worked for 15 years designing and building driveshafts/drivelines for everything from airplanes to 100ft long printing presses, trucks, excavating equipment, cars AND YES, boats. People seem to forget that in a lot of places during the winter the roads are covered with salt, yet all the driveshafts just don't start snapping into all over town. For the most part they can take a fair amount of abuse. In the case of your install, you should be fine for a VERY LONG TIME. Just keep it greased and you will be fine.

Gareth - I'm all on your side re the drive train! Another boater I know has a classic old Dutch barge and he showed me the updated drive. He's installed a recycled bus engine, the sort that lies flat under the bus so there' more room for people, with sensible universal joints and a thrust bearing. It works a treat, and I'd often thought why boat drives are so obsessively 'in line' with so much time spent aligning the engine with the prop shaft!

I live in southern Arizona. The sun pretty much ruins just about any kind of paint, varnish, coating, fiberglass, plastics, rubbers in time. Things that we want to last longer than just a few years we keep out of the sun. You can use boat, RV, and car covers, but the sun will destroy those fairly quickly so one must replace them on a fairly regular basis. The darker the color you're coating, the more of the sun's rays are absorbed and the higher the surface temperature which bakes the finish as well, shortening the life even more. It's why you'll see roof coatings in my city pure or a snow white. The more pigment in paint, the shorter it's life.

Hey guys. On your starter, I would put a relay at your starter to carry the load easier. I know that you have a solenoid that draws smaller amperage, but a relay would cure your problem of smaller wire. Love the videos. I watch every week. That drive train is in a much more friendly environment than a typical automotive drive train. Given the salt on roads in many areas it shouldn't be any surprise that even poor quality automotive parts would hold up well in an environment where they only occasionally get direct contact with salt water as opposed to nearly continuous contact in a wet winter road driving condition. Cars rust out, but the drive train components usually hold up for a lot longer than body panels. Good to see that your design is holding up.

  • @JamesRook

I'd also say that an automotive driveline is designed to withstand a whole lot more torque and horsepower than the engines most sailboats have. With slip yokes and universal joints it's also designed to be vibration free in operation even with all the changing angles and movement a car's rear has. Very adaptable and forgiving. I see KZread sailors agonizing over getting the "normal" drive system to line up within thousandths of an inch when it's not at all necessary with an automotive system like this.

A spectacular video kids! I get to call you Kids on account of me being 74! I'm thinking about the uncomfortable heat. I have lived in the tropics most of my life and I still hate being sweaty and the rest. Have you guys heard about those small, portable little aircon units that you can take with you anywhere on the boat? They can run off ship's power and they are very economical with their power consumption. I think but not sure that during daylight hours you should be able to run one on just the solar panels ! Of course, night time is a different story but hopefully the weather should be getting a little cooler by then? I can't live in a sauna all night either!

As I am originally from Rochester, NY. Home of every salty road and rotted car, I can tell you that I have seen thousands of driveshafts that were under a year old, with FAR more rust... Maybe if it were powder coated it would last longer without looking like hell, but I don't think I'd worry all too much about it. Of course, on land you can simply pull over and call a wrecker, but being a mechanic for many years, I can count on one hand the amount of driveshafts I have seen that looked unsafe.. The other thing is your starting switch. I see you have a starter solenoid on the starter, but you could add a starter relay that would deal with the high amps at the starter and very low amps to/from the key. It I went that way,. I'd look for one for marine use or even snow plow use. Anything that looks like a FORD design will work in a pinch, but some are far more substantial than others. Best of luck to the three of you!!!!!!

Hey Garrett your outside the marine catalog is the normal way commercial watermen here on the Chesapeake bay keep there workboats running. Another cool trick I take a chevy powersteering pump drill out the suction and return ports. Use it as a hydraulic pump to power a steering system or line winder. Its a massive amount of work keeping a wooden boat in good shape especially down there where the water is warm and the bugs can literally eat your boat.

Red’s a testament to the care you two put in to building her, given the conditions she’s lived in since you headed South she’s done really well. Yeah, “marine” parts prices….same with “motorsport,” “aviation,” and a whole bunch of other niche markets where people are happy with the reassuringly expensive simply because they don’t know the subject in depth. Engineering is Engineering, whether boat plane, train or automobile, numbers do not lie. Having spent a midsummer stuck on the hard in Sicily doing heavy boat work, thanks to an errant owner/skipper, I can just about imagine how brutal your stay in the marina was! Overall decent OE quality Automotive parts are the best quality at the best price , the market is huge. Car parts have to be tested in very harsh environments ( including salt) as well. Only if you are sure the " marinised" part really adapted to meet a tougher marine use specification are parts at " boat price" worth it. I'm also amazed that leisure boaters and cruisers don't use decent anti corrosion wax on steel parts that can't be made of stainless. Whether it's boat part or a car part don't buy on price, do your research which are the good manufacturers.

Perhaps a starter relay. That way a small current is all that's required to trip the relay. You can make the power jumper on the relay from heavy battery cable and very short. the relay can be mounted close to the starter.

Garret can I suggest you look into Lion Oil. Aircraft parts are covered at the factory with Lion Oil as an inhibiter. On the surface it dries like varnish, but between the surface & the object it remains like grease. When a Aircraft engineer orders & receives a part he simply degreases it before install. In my view you could use it in many applications. There is another & it's called Preserveck. Not sure of the spelling though. Help it helps.

It fascinates me that I've watched RedAviva grow from her first year or so. Growing up, getting educated and becoming the boat she is today with much more to see. Also, Ruth and Garrett learning to manage new techniques and skills. Plus the fairly large chunk of time Swab was about and aboard. Miss you Swab. I'm very grateful to be a part of your life and journey so far. Thanks guys and looking forward to another 8years... much love from the Wirral Peninsula
