    Hi, I’m Christiaan, one of the reporters on this story. A few days into the invasion of Ukraine, my colleague noticed that ham radio hobbyists were listening in on Russian military radio traffic. Given that there were hundreds of hours of recordings, we decided to focus on the radio transmissions from the first 24 hours of the Russian assault on Makariv, a strategic town west of Kyiv. We verified that these were Russian troops speaking by linking the radio exchanges with visuals we geolocated and timestamped in Makariv, and interviews with local residents in Makariv and surrounding places including Kopyliv and Motyzhyn. Combined, the story gives an unvarnished window into the operations of an invading army. Let us know if you have any questions below and we’ll try to answer. Thanks for watching.

    I'm not trying to defend the Russian invasion or Russian soldiers. But I believe the Russian tankers would NOT have destroyed that car with the elderly couple if they had known. And, it is likely these Russians have literally no clue how to discern who is traveling to get away and who might be coming up to drop a Molotov or a Javelin down their throat. It's truly a no win situation for them and for the Ukrainian civilians. Do not misunderstand -- the radio transmissions we heard clearly show evidence of war crimes -- but in the fog of war where everyone looks and talks Russian -- this is going to happen. I think this may or may not be necessarily war crime -- but it's definitely war. :(

    That's because the Russians thought the Ukrainian people would come out onto the streets cheering them offering them food and drinks and the whole thing will only take a few days to a full week. Some didnt even know the full details of what their mission was till they crossed over the border,thinking they were still on live-fire military exercises. Some even sold/swapped Diesel fuel for their vechiles in exchange for liquor in Belarus,before the invasion. I've seen militias and armed insurgent groups better organized, disciplined and more skillful foot soldiers in battle than what were seeing from most of the Russian army. Wherever they go they just destroy everything,they adopt a "scorched earth" tactic,shooting attacking anything basically to get the other side to give in to the pressure. They fought that way in WW2. Raping so much German women and girls and looting and massacring civilians. It hasn't changed. All their $$$$ they sowbt to "modernize" was for naught because they didn't change what matters most,the foundation,which is the military culture. The military culture is plagued with corruption, nepotism, rife with criminality and abuse towards their own,especially sub ordinates badly treated by superiors. They've even got a special word for the brutual humiliating hazing and treatment conscripts receive in the army,look it up I forget what's it called in Russian,but its that bad,and suicide rates are abnormally high amongst conscripts as a direct result of bullying and bad conditions. Their training is generally not of good quality either,so there's that too, not all units but most are trained to a low quality basic level. Like the Soviets. You can take Russia our of the Soviet Union but can't take the Soviet mentality out of Russia's political-military leadership. They're all born & raised Soviet style. Russia wins wars by brutality, by indiscriminate use of firepower, that's all they have in their advantage,not high skills like all the good armies have. The Russian army is overrated. Your 100% right,their institutions are rotten to the core which affects the entire war machine,that's why any good, professional army dosnt tolerate corruption or criminal behaviour especially towards fellow troops,treated with respect. In the Russian army,only officers live and operate in good conditions mostly. Not my opinions,but showing how your right about that,I read a book by a former US Marine Corp general who's studied the Soviet/Russian military for decades,he wrote the same thing about them and more stuff that makes so much sense when you look at what's wrong in the Russian army's performance when fighting a near peer military and not some small group of armed insurgents in a poor country like in Syria. Ukraine has exposed Russia as a paper bear,only thing they do have really is the biggest arsenal of nukes, without it Russia's army ain't much.

    It requires reform of not just their military but their society as well. The entirety of Russian society is top-down. To fix the problems with their military they have to place more emphasis on empowering their troops, and put considerably larger percentages on funding into their troops, equipment, etc, which either requires them to triple their military spending, or shrink the size of their armed forces by 2/3's. Before they can do that they have to fix their top-down political structures. No western country leader has more power than the entirety of the government under him. Putin does. That is where the flaw is, it's not Putin (in particular), it's not their generals (in particular), it's the system that places so much emphasis on those few at the top, creating an unstable, unnatural system. The problem is, if they adopt a more modern "empowerment of the many" social psychology, it will rob the Kremlin, and whatever other authorities in Russia, of dominating power. People will demand reform, decentralization of power, and then Russia will be "stuck" in the same mind set as the rest of the planet (by stuck I mean progress towards more modern social ideals, but making it nearly impossible to recentralize power should someone try again in the future). Truthfully, it is the natural order of things for power to slowly migrate towards the many, centralized power is an unnatural state, which is why it's so unstable and so prone to upset, decentralized power works so well, and that's why, despite decades of misinformation, subterfuge, and upheaval campaigns, centralized powers in the east have failed to derail decentralized power in the west, decentralized power is just naturally much more stoic.

  • @2hot2handle65

    @2hot2handle65

    @@loganl7547 I don't believe good military performance has anything to do with centralization in either society or government. The most obvious example is Nazi Germany, one of the most centralized states in history, both culturally and institutionally. Yet it steamrolled de-centralized states like the French Third Republic. Then it fought for four years against the greatest industrial power at the time (US), the greatest empire at the time (UK), and the largest country at the time (the Soviet Union). The German military excelled when it came to junior leaders taking the initiative, logistics, and communications -- precisely those areas where Russia is lacking. And Germany was an extremely centralized totalitarian state. Furthermore, the German military itself had always benefited from centralization reforms, starting with Prussia and the Prussian General Staff. There are countless other examples.

    @@2hot2handle65 first of all, sorry for the long winded reply, I have minor OCD and feel compelled to over-explain things, I try to re-read and cut stuff out, but ultimately I end up adding more in than I remove.... anyways the reply... Yes but Germany fell because it's governmental power was centralized, I'm not saying that decentralization of power is necessary for an individual military campaign, but it is necessary for the long term survival of a society. Had Germany never centralized it's political power Germany would have had a more emotionally stable outlook on it's situation, and likely never would have initiated full scale war against Europe, all of this happened because they put all of the power in the hands of one person, a single person is prone to emotional instability and irrationalism, issues that are much less common (not unheard of, obviously, but less common for sure) in decentralized power states, the more people share that power the more "rational" and stoic that society becomes. Don't misunderstand, EVERY society is made up of all kinds of irrational people, but as we've seen in practice, the irrational people tend to exist on both sides of nearly any society wide argument, and generally balance each other out, creating rational, and emotionally stable societies (which are again made up of emotionally unstable and irrational people). You could argue that the above issues could be avoided if the leader in a central power system only listened to their staff and to the greater population, and while it's true that would correct the issues that come with centralized power, it will only correct them temporarily, once that leader falls out of power, or dies, or whatever, centralized power systems are then at the mercy of the emotional and mental stability of the person next in line. As far as connecting top-down societies to top-down military systems, it's difficult to draw exact parallels for sure, and I understand that makes my case fairly weak, but from what I can tell it boils down to "refreshing the system", the more often a political system is refreshed, the more frequently military ideals are refreshed, it's not 1:1 for sure, but there seems to be a direct correlation between more democratic nations having more modern military systems. There is also the possibility that to maintain power a leader requires a considerably larger amount of force, which means military budgets are heavily weighted in the direction of troop presence vs research and development. People mistakenly attribute military R&D purely to technology or weaponry, in reality a large swath of funding goes into military doctrine and practices. Look at the accusations by Gaetz of "Wokism" within the military, this is the result of advancements in military doctrine following advancements in society to be inclusive and relatable, which keeps general popular support for the military high, etc etc. Again, sorry for the long winded reply, I have minor OCD.

I am so angry for all of the people I met there who may now be refugees, sheltering in their basements, or dead.. These are people who never hated Russian people and even saw them as brothers, but may now *never* forgive them for doing this to their families, neighbors, villages, cities and country.. Thanks to the Putin regime, many Ukrainians may NOW actually begin hating Russians.. even the Russian-speaking Ukrainians who used to align themselves more with Russian patriots just a few years ago are now filled with rage.

    I must admit that the Ukrainian army has received very good training in 8 years, and at the same time you can see the quality work of the American and British secret services, which provide them with accurate information. Ukrainians have very well coordinated attacks, thanks to the use of modern weapons and drones. Ukraine has a new kind of support units, they call these units "Eyes", they are operators of small reconnaissance drones, who provide information about the movement and numbers of the enemy. In the future, we will probably meet units that are mobile, small and quickly move to a suitable position, send a drone, map the area, then disappear and if they find the enemy, an attack will come. Simply a modern variant of scouts. It's just electronic nerds...

    To give more context on Buran-30, his unit was one of the most active personnel on our radio frequencies. We have indicated that the Russian Commander that is leading this unit is named, Yurii, or so we thought based on the intel we've received from the radios. Buran-30 has given excessive information on what was happening and it has tremendously helped Ukrainians to see where they were and their next attack. In the one recording in this video where Buran-30 was crying, he was crying because he got caught in a firefight and he was scared for his own life - he saw a lot of Russian soldiers die from this firefight and he lost a lot of tanks. The unidentified unit that was speaking to him was later revealed as Butan-15, Butan-15 told Buran-30 to shut up and to keep on advancing. Throughout the next few days, Buran-30's voice was sounding a bit raspy. It was later revealed to us that his voice became terribly raspy due to all the yelling and smoke. And if I remember correctly and if it is true, the last active radio frequency he was on was with the Russian Air Force to hit Kharkiv. I am not the one to confirm this, however, we just believe it was him because of the familiar voice. And sadly, the last time we heard the Russian Commander of Buran-30 was a few weeks ago as it was reported that he fled back to Russia and help the wounded soldiers there. Now, they are no longer use unprotected radio frequencies but rather encrypted ones and they use stolen cellphones from Ukraine to communicate with each other. Fortunately, a lot of people are still able to gain access to encrypted radios and stolen cellphones. However, they are much harder to gain access to as the devices they use are secure or they are very outdated.

    "Loose lips sink ships" that applied quite literally today, the russian propaganda machine was boasting about the capture of the port at Berdyansk, the ukranians noticed one of the russian ships was still there and they destroyed it, seemingly still full of ammo and supplies, two other ships were also damaged and the port was probably heavily damaged too oh and as a bonus, these are not just very expensive losses, they are literally irreplaceable, turkey wont allow russian ships through the Bosporus, each black sea ship lost will remain lost for the duration of the conflict
