The War With Ukraine Is Coming Home to Russians

As Russia's army falters on the battlefield in Ukraine, President Putin has announced a 'partial' mobilisation of citizens with military experience. But in reality- students, pensioners and people with no army training have been called up. Hundreds of thousands of Russians have fled the country. VICE News asks if Russia's 'special operation' has finally become a real war.

Just an fyi for those who don’t speak Russian. The guy whose justifying Russian actions in Ukraine was translated inaccurately. He uses the word “Hohol” (phonetically spelled with English letters) and Vice translates this to mean “Ukrainians” but it’s actually a racist derogatory word used to reference Ukrainians. So in context he’s literally saying “our goal isn’t to annihilate those “racist term to describe Ukrainians” . I don’t blame Vice for not knowing this but since I am a Russian and Ukrainian speaking Ukrainian American, I wanted to clarify this for all non Russian speaking people watching this.

I was a military officer and I oversaw the training a number of our own troops, as well as foreign troops. I am eminently familiar with what it takes to turn a civilian into a properly functioning soldier that not only will survive those first few days of battle, but also become actual contributors to a fighting force. I can tell you that it takes no less than 5-6 weeks of basic training to train someone to the point they won't immediately die on the line. And 8-12 weeks of basic to where they can function as a proper infantry soldier. And on top of that, weeks of training with their unit. All these boys are not receiving anywhere near enough training or equipment. Many of them are going to die without being given the training necessary. This is a f**king tragedy and a farce.

Living in the students’ dorm neighbouring this theatre, I have been witnessing this mobilisation day after day for the whole month. There was nothing left for me to do but see the young men kissing their families with tears in their eyes because they don’t want to be separated from each other. Watching the scenes of farewell made me disastrously mad, I swear I was full of terror and rage at the same time.

Totally get that! To know that some old sociopath fart is leading your country to ruins! Is killing and destroying not only abroad, but also at home! So much injustice. And certainly not worth fighting or dying for. So many russian families torn apart, just to steal from a brotherly nation in total and despicable traitorship of normal humanity. Poor Ukraine! Hope you are able to fight this in your own way. Stay safe! Be prudent. And if you can... get out. Vile russian leadership is already like nazism in Germany, all smart Germans left the country, while it was still possible. All others regretted their stay deeply. It will get much worse!

I'm not saying Russia wouldn't be a better place if Putin were to be removed from power, because it sure as hell would be. However, NATO is a defense force and unless Russia attacks a country that's part of the alliance, NATO can't directly attack. If they do, then Russia would be correct in fearing an attack from the West and that would somewhat justify their invasion of Ukraine. I do hope Russia can fix their problems and flourish one day, but not through military means because there are people I love living there who don't have the option to leave and I can't ever support any actions that could potentially hurt them

These people were born in a country that's run by Putin, his regime controls the media, uses violence to oppress anyone who speaks out against it and indoctrinates children. The people you're looking at don't know any better and it's not like they can find out what the rest of the world says if they don't know other languages. Easy to call them ignorant when you were lucky enough to grow up in a free country observing everything from a safe distance.

Thought the same thing, then I saw the absolute rubbish that they grow up listening to. Schools, tv, everything… it’s all so filled with Russian propaganda. Absolutely no freedom, at all. Just look at what they do to people critiquing the armed forces?, punished.
