The story of an elite Russian unit's war in Ukraine - BBC Newsnight

Russia’s 331st Guards Parachute Regiment is considered "the best of the best", but BBC Newsnight has been tracing the casualties as the unit battles through Ukraine.
Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog
The regiment's commanding officer - Col Sergei Sukharev - died in mid-March. His chief of staff and numerous other officers have also fallen.
The regiment previously served in the Balkans, Chechnya and the 2014 Russia invasion in the Donbas.
Tracking the unit through Ukraine, Newsnight’s diplomatic and defence editor Mark Urban looks at the outpouring of grief and anger from Russia in response to the devastating losses. What went wrong for the once-elite regiment? And what does its fate tell us about Russia's invasion of Ukraine?
This film was produced by Maria Jevstafjeva and Louis Harris-White.

Airborne units are not meant to partake in heavy, multi-day fighting. As a former member of the 82nd myself, we were, AT MOST going to sustain ourselves for 48 (MAYBE 72) hours before "follow-on" forces arrived and reinforced or replaced us. Seizing an airfield is one thing but seizing and holding a TOWN is a completely other matter. Even if our entire BCT jumped in, we would not have the manpower (or fire power) to take and hold a city! That's insane!

He may not be the antichrist, but he's definitely the anti-Robin Hood! Steal from the poor and keep all the wealth for one's self is the dictator's creed. This highlights the difference between democracies and dictatorships, between liberals and conservatives, between good and evil! Conservativism is a disorder caused by traumatic events in early childhood: trauma, accidents, neglect, and all kinds of abuse. Anything that causes fear and triggers the amygdala (the brain's fear center) leads to the formation of conservatives. Here's a list of reputable sources that explain this phenomena... The antivaxxers, the anti-maskers, the insurrectionists, those who have been displaying inappropriate behavior are very damaged people. When babies aren't protected, loved, and cared for properly they experience fear and it reshapes their brains. Their amygdalas are triggered by trauma, neglect, and abuse, becoming overly large and affects their thoughts and behaviors negatively. The abhorrent behavior seen on January 6th, the Karen's behaving hysterically, etc are people who have experienced horrors in one shape or another early in their lives and can't cope with reality very well. They're annoying, they're irritating, their behavior is disgusting, but that's because they are physiologically and psychologically damaged people. Here are reliable sources that explain and demonstrate this phenomenon... Trauma, neglect, and/or abuse in early childhood overstimulates the amygdala (the brain's fear center) causing it to grow huge and results in aberrant thoughts and behaviors. This is damage you can LITERALLY SEE IN A BRAIN SCAN! Read the peer reviewed research on the fMRI differences between conservatives and liberals. Here's a little help; conservatives have larger amygdalas and liberals have larger anterior cingulate cortexes. Amygdala = fear. Anterior cingulate cortex= higher level, complex thinking. The THREE DAY VICTORY OF PUTIN...became the 3 month rout...retreat. BECAUSE OF THEM. NOT US. FRANKLY...our failure to give Ukraine the long range missiles, to take out Russian assets BOMBING UKRAINE, IN THEIR RETREAT...is what is holding back an earlier VICTORY. AND YET THEY SOLDIER ON...ANYWAY.. And while I understand the politics behind this decision, I think NOT trusting the Ukrainians with these missiles has caused PREVENTABLE hardship and damage...AND YET THEY SOLDIER ON...ANYWAY. When you compare THE WEST'S AID, NOW IN UKRAINE...to the cost, DAILY, in Afghanistan to save THEM from an extremist government... and the 20yr effort, blood, treasure, and a fully trained and equipped Afghan Army and Air Force...that SIMPLY FOLDED AND WALKED AWAY FROM.. lacking the heart or will to fight for THEIR OWN country... leaving those arms to the Taliban, and NOW ARE WHINING about their very real loss of EVERYTHING WE GAVE THEM.. Compared to ALL OF THAT...the West's...and US AID to Ukraine...and their sacrifice, heart, effort, and desire to win...is an unbelievable BARGAIN. And, FOR ONCE, WELL PLACED. Here is the thing about elite units: They are extremely good and extremely valuable for the purpose that they are designed for. This is a parachute/ airborne regiment equipped with lightly armored vehicles, which is elite in deploying quickly and launch an organized attack with short preparation time to accomplish a specific task like taking a certain enemy position. It is not the first time in history that such a unit was effectively dissolved by having been given a task where their elite capabilities are neither required nor matter. For the broader task that was given, they were simply the wrong choice. When you need numbers and a variety of capabilites and instead you send one elite division, it is bound to end in a catastrophe.

Yes. Russia’s faked up communist coup there, and a decade of fighting only produced - the mujaheddin. It was the mothers and veterans resentment of the Kremlin’s brutal use of cannon-fodder (brutal before many of them even got to Afghanistan) that resulted, not only in the 1989 withdrawal, but resentment at the Russian elite’s underlying contempt for the lives of their own citizens… a bug fact ir in the dissolution of the USSR.

It might be going to plan, if the plan was to invade your smaller neighbour, run out of supplies, take horrendous casualties, have your tanks towed away by tractors, lose senior commanders on a daily basis, have sanctions drop on your economy like an anvil, witness hundreds of companies leave your country, watch your currency devalue by 40%, shut down your stock market to stop it evaporating, and show the world just how incompetent your forces are. So if that WASN’T the plan, then clearly it’s not going as expected.

It's much easier to win if they are civilised & have roads already built because they wouldn't want bloodshed in the first place and submit willingly. Srsly, look at world history. General rule of thumb regarding casualties - get the number of killed in action then multiply it by three to get the number of wounded. So with about a hundred killed and three hundred wounded from a regiment of 1,500 is approximately a casualty rate of 25 percent. Even for elite units, casualty rates at that level, plus the morale impact of the loss of its commander and the likely loss of equipment in combat, this unit is probably combat ineffective thus necessitating its withdrawal to a rear area for reconstitution.

@@davidjames2145 Your society is built on the suffering of others. I see what is happening both on one side and on the other. This whole conflict happened because of the actions of your government. After all, you were asked to give security guarantees. Not to expand NATO to the east. Now reap the fruits of your shitocracy.

This type of news is what journalists are supposed to do. Not cheerleading about the war or the weapons used in it.

Mark Urban is a top journalist. He is even more impressive when providing strategic, geopolitical analysis. In five minutes or so this captures the complete futility of Putins war and the terrible cost his own people are paying. Some patriot.

I got bile in my throat when the Russia Deputy Minister of Defense talked about Nazis. His words are an insult to people who have died to the true Nazis in the Second World War including million of his own Russian countrymen. At some base level those soldiers of 331st must have known that they were acting like the German did in WW2. Killing of civilians , looting and reports of some raping. That they invaded a country that did not want them there , that they are the oppressive "orcs" , that they are on the wrong side of history. A solider at a personal level cannot use the excusing of just following orders to avoid his own personal responsibility.

@Mitthenstein "We have very clear evidence that they didn’t come over to attack citizens." kzread.info/dash/bejne/eoKIstt6o7DTqNY.html I can give you more. You need to get your information not only from Russian State TV. Like a good propagandist you add some grains of truth in your many statements. Best lessons of life learnt is don't waste a lot of time trying to inform or change people that are incapable of change. Speak your words of true and let history judge you in time :)

@Mitthenstein Surprising we might agree on a lot of subjects. You may be educated and its good that you question things and not look at things at face value but please please if you can take anything from this conversation. Worse than being stupid you are illogical as stupidity is just a lack of information while being illogical is a lack of a structed thought process. When you see direct evidence that comes to you that contradicts your world view and you cant logically explain it you need to rethink your thought process when you say illogical things to defend your current position. Also its good to embrace self doubt in your beliefs and knowledge and re examine them from a different point of view. I do. Personal note I enjoyed this conversation and thanks for your time that you spend writing it. Its good that we can this have this discussions at a intellectual level without base personal and emotional attacks. At first thought you were a Russian propagandist , its good that you have corrected me :)
