I played clarinet and learned to play saxophone on the fly when we were short handed on saxophone players. We were a small High School band so some of our band students had to learn to play another instrument while in High School in case someone was sick or injured. We didn’t take lessons, you just set with that section of the band and had them show you the finger positions for that instruments notes and then the band director started and you tried to learn the instrument while playing it. It’s kind of a sink or swim situation, lol😂

Marching bands, of course, originated as a military adjunct. As the Romans discovered, when an army marches in step, they get places quickly and more efficiently. Cue the drums, and their leader, the drum Major. College bands originated in the late 19th century as part of the schools' ROTC programs, but gradually became non-military in the early 20th century. Marching in step and close formation has a long tradition!

Just for clarification: The word "blockbuster" as used here does not refer to the now defunct rental store "BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO" Blockbuster is used to describe a work of entertainment (usually a big budget Hollywood movie, but other media can be included), that is highly popular & financially successful. For example: Star Wars is a huge blockbuster, which spawned an entire franchise of films, merchandise, tv shows, etc. The blockbuster movies featured here are : Superman, logo & Superman saving a falling building Lord of the Rings, the One Ring & the eye of Sauron Harry Potter, logo & Harry on catching the Golden Snitch Jurrasic Park, T-rex walking & chomping down on a dude Pirates of the Caribbean, ship battle vs Michigan State

I was in High school marching band. It was really tough. Getting up at 5 am for early warm up and practice. You have to not only memorize the music but also where you have to be on the field for the 12 min performance. And you also have to play all of the other songs in the stands throughout the football game. I had the opportunity to march during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade w/ my high school band. We all were an awesome team and I’m still friends with them 15 years later

I marched in another college marching band (Purdue) and I can provide some insight. They likely learned that show in 1-3 weeks as most college marching bands, at least a big schools like Purdue or Ohio State, perform a new show every home game. Playing and knowing where to go once you have done it for years like them or me is mostly muscle memory. I never really had to “think” about what to play or where to go as much as most people think you do. Also because we rehearse the show every day. It helps when everyone around you is very good and you can rely on them too unlike when I was in high school.

American High Schools also do Field Shows at half time. You learn a new Field Show for each home game so you have a week or maybe two weeks to learn each new Field Show plus go to school everyday, do your homework and if you play sports like I did then you have tennis/basketball practice after school too. It’s a lot to keep up with and you gotta keep your grades up or you can’t be in band. If you’re failing a class then they make you drop band and take a study hall instead so you can concentrate on your school work so you can’t be a dummy or lack determination/commitment to be in band. Most band members have been in band since 4th or 5th grade. I loved band, you become like a family as you spend everyday together during the school year and a few weeks together practicing during the summer plus traveling all over for parades in the summer months, Field Competitions and Concert Band Competitions in the Winter months. We spend alot of time together on the Band busses and we have to work together daily to make the music and movements look flawless and easy for our shows and competitions so we do become a band family and look out for one another. Band is a melting pot of kids from different backgrounds, different financial means/hardships, athletes/non-athletes, etc. but we all come together for band and it really is a team effort to make it work. Band people are friends for life. I’ve been out of school for 36 years and even though some of us live hundreds of miles from each other we still stay in touch with each other and get together when we can. Band is hard work, dedication, memorization of all of your music, learning how to march, staying in step with your fellow band mates, keeping your lines straight and hitting your places on the field at the right time, lots of counting all while playing your instrument. Not to mention your school work and sports you play after school. Band is hard work but so much fun. ❤

Haven't heard any reactor mention it. The second, Lord of the Rings and the Eye of Sauran. The third, Harry Potter and the Quidditch game (with the Golden Snitch that Harry must catch) flying around the field until Harry catches it. Then Jurassic Park with the T-Rex eating the other team's player from Michigan. Also, watch closely and you will see the player's helmet fly after T-Rex straightens up. Then Pirates of the Caribbean with the Ohio ship sinking the Michigan ship (two rivals in football). This is amazing.

TBDBITL! Go Bucks! I was in marching band in Ohio in high school. Most of the schools did moving formations like this, but not as precise. We'd have 50 to 70 memorized positions for a half time show that we practiced all fall. I still remember marching to a position that had the drill team/flag corp girls mesh through my line as we matched. The flag girl closest to me was too close and as she spun her flag she clocked me a good one with the pole.

One of my daughters play trombone in her high school marching band through her sophomore year and I can tell you the band practiced as much as teh football team and took it as seriously, both for half-time performances and for competitions. Marching Band is a sport and should be recognized as such.

It’s always fun to watch people appreciate field marching performances by marching bands. I was in marching band in high school. I don’t think many people who weren’t in the arts in school realize that marching band, including field marching, is competitive (at least in the US, can’t speak about elsewhere). In April of each year the band director/teacher would get with the band (both existing members and those soon to be freshman/9th graders joining….the high school and junior high were housed in the same building in my rural school district so it wasn’t a problem). We’d discuss ideas for the field marching show, parade songs, concerts, etc (there were three field marching competitions: district, state, and regional; we held a Fall Concert at the elementary school the week before Thanksgiving, a Christmas Concert downtown on the town square at the courthouse lawn’s gazebo, a Christmas Concert at a nearby city’s shopping mall in their center court, a Spring Concert right before spring break at a local park’s gazebo, and the End of the Year Concert at the high school; the parades were a parade that celebrates the nearby city’s founding in 1893, the parade at the State Fair, another parade at a separate State Fair….my state has two State Fairs in separate parts of the state because the state is formed from two former territories: Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory so there’s a state fair in Tulsa and a state fair in Oklahoma City and both have parades, then there’s the Homecoming Parade in a nearby city for their University, then the Veterans Day Parade in November, and then the Tri-State Music Festival Parade; then of course we also prepared songs to play at sports teams’ pep rallies and games usually coordinating with the cheer team, mascot, and pep squad. And we had to learn the music for the Kindergarten, 6th Grade, Junior High 8th grade, and High School Graduation ceremonies). The field marching, parades, and all but the two concerts at the school were competitions where we were judged, scored, and won trophies for our school. First we had people that would transpose music to turn it into music for a marching band. We did the Jurassic Park theme song my freshman year. There’s no string instruments in marching band like in orchestra so those parts have to be transposed to other instruments in marching band in a way that the song still sounds good. My school’s band director was friends with the university’s band director and they usually worked on that throughout the month of May. For the field show that means also choreography so that the various designs can easily flow with the music. Again that was worked on throughout May. Summer vacation for my school was most of May (school year ended the second week of May) until early August (school started the second week of August). In June we’d be mailed the music and it was our responsibility to have all the field marching and parade music memorized by the start of school. August would usually be spent practicing the music together as a band in the band room. September we’d start work on parade and field marching…combining the music and steps. The first field marching competition wasn’t until mid-October, but the city founding parade and state fair parades were all in mid September so we had to be ready. Because of this that meant band members had to arrive earlier to school. School normally starts at 8:20am, but band members would arrive at 7am. School ended at 3:30pm, but band members would stay after school until 5:00pm to practice. We did this until mid-October and then went back to practicing during regular school hours. At our high school’s football homecoming came is when we’d reveal our field marching show. It was good practice for the upcoming competitions. The concerts: elementary fall concert and end of the year concert were for fun and entertainment. For the elementary concert we’d play fun songs like cartoon theme songs, pop songs, we’d do skits, call teachers up “conduct” the band, have the elementary band kids come sit next to us and perform a song a together, the elementary music teacher usually had some fun skits and tricks she like to do on us as well. Just a fun time for everyone before we went on fall break. The end of the year concert was basically getting to perform for family. It was the chance to perform songs parents and grandparents attending might know and other fun things. The games were just the band having fun getting the crowd hyped and helping cheer on the teams…hopefully to victory! And if those teams went to state that meant the band traveled, too, to be at the games! And every four years the band takes a trip. I was in 10th grade when that came around. We performed a concert under the original London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona (technically under the bridge in a “performance” area that connects the bridge to a resort there), went to San Diego, California where we visited lots of places and performed concerts each day at the resort we stayed at, and then took a train to the Grand Canyon (where it snowed on us…and we were all in shorts and t-shirts since it had been warm in San Diego when we left! LOL). It’s a lot of hard work, but honestly it was fun and I know that we always loved hearing how much people enjoyed the shows. Most of us also went to stuff for our fellow students in other competitions (arts, academics, etc) when we could. We tried being supportive even if some students weren’t so supportive (I think every school had students who don’t do extracurricular stuff, join clubs and teams, etc and those were usually the ones that made fun of all of us who were involved in stuff). Being a school of only 300 students total (pre-kindergarten to seniors in high school) a lot of us were involved in multiple things. I mean we had football players in the marching band (and them changing at half time from their football uniforms to band uniforms to perform the halftime shows was definitely a feat for them). Great video!

Jono Graham, another definition of "Blockbuster", and probably the source of the name for the chain of "once upon a time" stores, is "movies that made millions upon millions at the theaters". To fill you in on a definition you may not yet know, the person in white who ran out to the center of the red "O" on the field is called the drum major, and serves as a sort of roving conductor. (Side note: you come from a beautiful country. I was there in 1/00 in Cape Town, working with some singles from church in a township there called Guguletu, which is one of those for the Xhosa tribe, as you probably know. I think you figured out #2 correctly--Harry Potter. Did you notice that at 9:00, the T Rex swallowed someone just to the right of the big "10" from Michigan, the opposing team, and a few seconds later, he spit out the helmet. In Pirates of the Caribbean, the opposing team was revealed as U. of Michigan. For a little twist on this halftime show thing, there's an activity here you may have heard about since you moved here--Drum Corps Int'l. or DCI. Back in 2008 (?), the corps from my home town won all the marbles at the DCI Finals in mid-August in Indianapolis. They're called the Phantom Regiment, and they won with an amazing show titled "Spartacus".

Marching band is probably one of the things I enjoy most in life. My high school marching band was never that great but we really played our best. Freshman year was probably the best we had and let me tell you the songs we played so were fun to play. I played percussion so I had to know how to play a bunch of instruments like (my favorite) cowbell, marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, bells, bass drum, bongos, congas, chimes, piano, toms, and a bunch of other instruments. Now going to my concert band class I played tuba, and for jazz band I play the bass trombone and tenor trombone. Along with all the instruments I played I had to memorize a ton of music and it is quite difficult to remember certain notes for a lot of different pieces. All in all I absolutely love everything about music.

I had two sisters who were in the flag core and performed with the band in high school here in Texas. One went on to be in the Flag Core for Texas Tech. High School football games here in Texas are a big show. You have the game itself and then you have the half time show. Normally both teams will have their bands perform. Depending on the school you will have participation from the drill team (normally made up of all girls with a large scale dance routine) the marching band, and a flag core. Each of these pieces have their own parts to play in the halftime show and are normally out on the field together performing. You will also see times when the band, drill team and flag core's do solo performances.

That's our OSUMB! 2 things of info: 1) the TRex when it closes its mouth is munching down on a "Michigan" player and it spits out his helmet afterwards, 2) of course there has to be the obligatory dig at the state up north i.e. Michigan as the losing ship in the naval battle. No Buckeye says the M state aloud unless they are telling a joke or make a cough sound. They are after all OSU's rival. GO BUCKS!!! Sc**w Blue!!!

Most of the big universities have great marching bands. It starts middle school, get better in high school and by the time college comes its in their blood. I am from Texas and of course my favorite is the Texas A&M marching band. kzread.info/dash/bejne/n6Wf1bmGn8bbZcY.html A&M stands for agricultural and mechanical. They teach you how to run the business of agriculture or mechanical focusing of the business side. A good portion of Texas business are started by A&M graduates. Many of the students go on to distinguest carrers in the military.

"The Mob" Rice University's marching band has a completely new half-time routine every week. They are absolutely ruthless and take every shot imaginable at whomever their football team is playing in that game. If you want to see a half-time show, "The Mob" is where you need to look.

I was on my HS flag line so you mention playing your instrument and remembering the choreography. Try twirling and tossing a flag and remembering the choreography all while not dropping your flag or hitting yourself or other band members with it...talk about pressure, lol.

This is the second video of yours I've seen. Actually it's 1 1⁄2 videos I have to go back and finish the other 1. I really like your style. I read in A comment that they have a different half time show for every home game in the season. So a team might have 6 or 7 home games and that's 6 or 7 routines that they have to learn. Sometimes the home game is back to back so the band members have To learn the music and choreography in 1 week. The Drill team I am most impressed with is the United States marine corp silent drill platoon. Everything is done in total silence and with such precision. The 1 I'm sending the link to is from Glattin High school in 2016. You want to see it performed on a hard surface which will become a parent when you watch the video of which I really hope you do kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYmNxMSNeMmalNo.html
