I am a current member of the OSU band, and have been a member since 2019. Almost all of us are full time students in any major across the university. We put on 7 of these shows a season, often learning them in a single week. We all have full time classes outside of this, and just pour our blood sweat and tears into these shows regardless of how many people do or don't watch them. Many of us grew up watching this band perform and are insanely grateful o be able to keep entertaining. If you are interested in more I would recommend our Rush or Top Gun shows from this year as well as the Queen show from a few years ago. I know that I speak for all of my friends when I say we are thankful for your attention, and are glad you enjoyed the show.

I was part of this show. To answer some questions you may have: 1. Everyone in the band is a student at the main or regional campus. There is no age limit as long as you're enrolled, can make the band, and manage the time commitment. There's actually a 52 year old in this video. Most members are studying engineering. Band is a class that can be taken up to 2 credit hours. 2. A show planning meeting is held with interested members in the Winter. The music and drill are usually arranged and charted over the summer. I believe we had 2 weeks to learn this show. 3. We're known for it now. If you're a fan of this and video games, I'd start with our video game halftime show. It was our first viral show, and currently has around 17 million views. 4. The primary focus of the band is game performance. We usually have a concert somewhere when traveling for games, and we have not done a Super Bowl, but we perform an NFL game each year alternating between the Bengals and the Browns. During my time from 2012-15, we did performances for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie, a special request at the Bel Air Country Club, and an NFL game in Wembley.

Thank you for a great explanation. I want to add that these people didn't just pick up an instrument when they started college. Most of them have been playing an instrument since at least high school. Many may have had experience in high school marching band, or a drum and bugle corp. Also, as long as you have your chart, and have it and your music memorized, you're good. Oh, and gridlines, yard lines and lots of practice are also vital.

As I go: 1) Band members are just any students who want to join and are good enough. Most people do this as a hobby. Good chance many of these guys have been marching for 5-8 years. 2) Marching is pretty easy when songs are as basic as the Superman theme. As long as you got the fundamentals down, all they're doing in that shot was making sure they stayed in lines with a few seniors counting their steps. The most difficult part of marching is just A) curves (notice how bumpy the ring was afterwards, curves are hard), B) transitions, and C) endurance. 3) If I had to guess, the dinosaur was probably the hardest part of all of this. The passthroughs were all on curves. Passthroughs are manageable but are like a difficulty multiplier, like 1x2 is just 2 but 5x2 is 10. Plus, it was all curves with few clear points. The cohesion was purely reliant on step count and size. There's a cool video where an OSU snare wears a GoPro through the whole pregame performance.

I graduated from Ohio State (OSU) many years ago and the Marching Band has always been held in very high regard here for well over 100 years. Every band member literally has to try out every week to keep their spot, as they can be "challenged" by an alternate on any given week. They put on a major production for every single home game halftime show (which is 7 or 8 games per year). The OSU football team is one of the best in the nation and the band is right up there with them in terms of national prestige and recognition. You should check out the video game show from (I think 2012) and also their "ramp entrance." The precision these students have is nothing short of amazing, and it is literally as hard to make the band as it is to make the football team - the competition is that fierce. For these reasons, the band is often referred to as TBDBITL, which stands for The Best Damn Band In The Land.

Usually the alumni band (former students) will also play at one game a year, but the current students play all of the home games (and some road games; you saw the visiting team's band leaving the field at the beginning of the video). Outside of some of the historically black schools (and even those, I think the music is better but the choreography isn't), Ohio State's band is almost universally regarded as the best. My brother was in one of the most famous marching bands, the University of Notre Dame. They practiced as much or nearly as much as the football team, 5-6 days per week. The band even has its own football field to practice on, separate from the practice field of the football team. I don't remember how large the band was 30 years ago when he was a student, but it currently has about 380 members. Every year he would need to leave home for a week after Christmas to travel to where the "Bowl Game" was being played. It was an enormous commitment.

I was in marching band in high school so the whole thing was familiar and comforting to me. I always wonder how long it takes to write the charts for a show like this... you're basically doing animation with people instead of traditional art. Writing the charts is probably a lot harder than learning them; each person only really needs to know where to stand in relation to the people around them and how to keep a straight line. After that, it's just practice.

As a high schooler in Ohio who has done four years of competitive marching band (and hopes to join OSU's marching band in the future), I would love to see more reactions to the Ohio State University Marching Band. I also think that if you are interested in seeing more cool marching band stuff, checking out DCI (Drum Corps International) performance/competition videos might be worth your time. If you do end up checking out DCI videos, my suggestion for a good starting video would be the Blue Devil's finals performance of their 2019 show "Ghostlight." I had the good fortune of my high school hosting late-season DCI events each year (so I got to see it live, in a polished, late-season form), and boy am I glad that my high school is a DCI event host. It's absolutely mind-blowing what those drum corps musicians can do. The Blue Devil's KZread channel has an awesome video of their World Championship finals performance that shows the show from the perspective of several corps members and other camera angles. Let's just say that they won first place that year for good reason! A good follow-up would be the Bluecoats show from the same year, as they scored a very close second place that was just as awesome in its own regard.

The Ohio State University is known for their halftime shows. They are nicknamed "TBDBITL" (The Best Damn Band In The Land). They start each game with the Script Ohio (it's super awesome when alumni come back and there are 4 of them!). They don't go to every away game....just the "big" ones to help pump up fans/players at the away stadium I guess to say it best. Oh, they have been invited to events over the years. You could probably research that one. Oh...one more fact for you....their stadium is called The 'Shoe' (came from Horseshoe, as that was the shape of the stadium until they filled it in with seats).

The Ohio State University Marching Band has the moniker “The Best Damn Band In The Land.” Most of the students study other things and do this for fun. There are lots of universities that have awesome halftime shows here in the US. The kids in high school also do marching band shows competitively. They spend lots of hours perfecting their shows and music.

I did marching band in highschool as a trombone player in Enterprise, Alabama and also at The University of South Florida. ALOT, ALOT, ALOT of work goes into a halftime show! But it was INCREDIBLY FUN to perform!! These are all students you see on the field. Some will go on to performance careers and/or teaching music at many levels as music directors. Some will go on to become the very people that choreograph these moves, or drill, as we call it. Some will become composers and some, like myself, will end up on a totally different path. For me, that path was Info Technology. Sadly, halftime shows are not televised during University and College football games like back in the day. It's a shame because a SHIT TON of work goes into making these shows fantastic and it's taken quite seriously by those involved! Glad you got to see this. A ton of marching band memories are flooding my brain right now! This shit here is NEXT LEVEL!!

10:12 - The Ship with the Blue flag w/the Gold M represented Michigan, Ohio States biggest rival. So of course this being the Ohio St. Band their ship would sink Michigan's ship.

You need to react to Ohio State coming to Wembley a few years ago. They had a parade through the streets of London, and they performed their show for everyone. Search for Ohio State Marching Band London, and also look for the Behind the scenes at Ohio State Marching band in Wembley. That second video shows them marching through the streets of London

I was in competitive band in high school, I can’t tell you the amount of work we did, 12 hr practices on the weekends, practice during the week, classes during school for it. (I was in color guard), I can’t even imagine the work and time with these type of shows. We did similar stuff but not as extreme.

So glad you reacted to this! They truly are amazing - - you need to see them do the "script Ohio" which (I think) they do at the end of a lot of their halftime shows. Ohio is quite a musical state: from the OSU Marching Band to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to The Cleveland Orchestra (which is ranked as one of the best in the world), we're blessed to have excellent music of every type. Cheers!

TBDBITL-The Best Damned Band In The Land. I suggest you check out their Michael Jackson set. It's phenomenal! Ohio State also has one of the elite college football teams in the country. I'm proud to be a Buckeye! BTW, these are all students that perform in the band. And they have to try out all over again each year. It's tough to get in. And yes, it's a ton of work.

There are competitions for marching bands too, called Drum Corps Internationals. There are so many different bands that compete. I high recommend the Blue Devils, whose 2017 show named Metamorph, is one of the best marching band performances ever.

The band members are kids/students in college. Check out the HBCU bands. All of the drum majors are amazing. There is a kid called Vanilla Funk (Justin) who's high school, Jeffery Davis, is famous for their marching band. Those kids are just as good as the college kids. In highschool in the states you're usually between 14 and 18 years old but the time you graduate.

Don't know if you noticed but... before Superman saves the falling building, he backs up in a 'phonebooth' .... notice the red ribbon with the word 'phone' on it to show that Clark Kent goes into the phone booth to change into Superman. Haven't heard any reactor mention it. The second, Lord of the Rings and the Eye of Sauran. The third, Harry Potter (his inials and the 'Z' scar) and the Quidditch game (with the Golden Snitch that Harry must catch) flying around the field until Harry catches it. Then Jurassic Park with the T-Rex eating the people. Then Pirates of the Caribbean with the Ohio ship sinking the Michigan ship (two rivals in football). This is amazing.

The best people at marching go to Ohio State. Being part of the Ohio State marching band is pretty much the apex of marching bands.
