I first encountered plastic bags in Germany. Back then bags were paper in the US. Then we adopted plastic and have gone through the same evolution you describe in the UK. Some of those thick "plastic" bags, though, I thibnk are made of starch and are biodegradable. The biggest objection to those thin plastic bags in coastal states is they end up in the ocean and sea life--turtles etc--get tangled up in them. My sister used to rescue sea turtles and hated them.

I have to smuggle incandescent light bulbs from Mexico at my house in Arizona because their inefficiency results in heat output that I use to keep my cold-sensitive plants from harm on exceptionally cold winter nights. The TV show you were thinking of was "Dog, the Bounty Hunter". My nephews were addicted to it to my sister's consternation.

What this Americanised version of events doesn't tell you is that in 1918 the majority of the island voted overwhelmingly for pro independence party Sinn Fein and setup it's first parliament in Dublin, Britain decided no, it's either partition or all out war. Ireland would never have won the war so Ireland was partitioned. Civil War happen between Anti Treaty and Pro Treaty forces. In the North, Catholics couldn't vote, couldn't get a house or get a job, everything was prioritised for Protestants and scraps thrown to Catholics. The Government in NI was actually called "A Protestant Parliament for Protestant People". Civil Rights marches happened but the British Army and Police force beat them off the streets and murdered them, then you can imagine what happened, the people fought back, the IRA came back and 30 years of war ensued leading to the Good Friday Agreement. Now as of 2024 the Catholics are now the majority in the North of Ireland but can't have a vote on Irish Unity until the British Government says it can.

Single use plastic bags are perfect for garbage bags for like bathrooms. And small bits of trash. I use them to carry things on bikes because there’s not much else. And yeah I have a dog do that helps. They are useful for just random jobs around that you never think about.

The newer lightbulbs are more expensive and have dangerous chemicals in them. It’s not really so great for consumers. It’s much harder to get warm lighting.

The B-52 shown that crashed was due to the pilot flying the huge aircraft like a fighter jet, there is No comparison!! This guy doing the speaking sounds foreign and that he dislikes the B-52, you lost on this one. I was stationed at the same base where the crash happened, we had never lost an aircraft at our base until this happened, you cannot fly an aircraft with a span of 185 feet and bank at 90 degrees as was proven. The pilot had to avoid the weapons storage area to his east as it was no fly zone due to nuclear weapons being stored there!!

I'm an Atlantan by birth & upbringing who's lived in Charleston for 17 years, and I drive back to Atlanta to visit family 3-4 times a year. The water towers, corn fields, and small-town buildings tell me that the KZreadr has left the interstate highways and taken a more scenic & slightly longer route through South Carolina. If you stick to I-20 and I-26 it'll be faster, but the surroundings are much less interesting and more monotonous. Also, Charleston's "French Quarter" is quite beautiful, but unlike New Orleans's full-fledged district, ours is pretty much a downtown area two blocks by two blocks. To answer your question around 8:11, the Charleston area has sandy beaches (Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, etc.), but in downtown Charleston the land & water are mostly separated by grassy marshes.

One thing I thought was weird about the lightbulbs thing; why *ban* them? I get that they are worst for the environment (although barely, right? Surely?) but banning something that is getting phased out by the free market seems weird. Hardly anyone buys those old style lights to begin with. There's no way it's that big of an issue to bring laws/crimes/punishments into it.

I expect to see a lot of womens' records broken and the ruination of womens' individual sports now that the Olympics have got themselves all tied up in the complicated biology of sex It could be so simple if they'd let it be: You are not eligible to compete with other women if you've got a Y chromosome. As it is, no XX female has much of a chance against an equally well-trained competitor with a Y chromosome and in certain sports like boxing the competition could actually be dangerous. This isn't to say chromosomes should be the only criteria, but they should be a fundamental one, not a determination of sex at birth based simply on external genitalia. As things are now, when someone like that Algerian boxer gets in the ring, the competition among XX women becomes for silver.

Texas electric grid is not winterized as much as Minnesota. Take for just one example, their natural gas fueled steam power plants. In Minnesota, just about the entire steam plant is under a roof, and the extreme outside conditions don’t reach the steam, heater drains, and cooling water pipes. In Texas, that roof is non existent. The steam, heater drains, and cooling water pipes are exposed to the outside weather. They use heat tracing wires on these pipes to keep these pipes from freezing at these power plants. Just one failed heat tracing wire, on a critical pipe, can reduce the power output of a power plant. 50% of the power is fueled by natural gas. In very cold weather, the output from natural gas wells decrease significantly, even if the well doesn’t entirely freeze up. Then add that many windmills froze as well, electricity supply did decrease below the electric demand. ERCOT is a governmental agency, not a private company, which can not be sued in a tort court. Accountability is exclusive to politics. FYI, the entire board of ERCOT resigned on the Governor’s request. The Legislature passed new laws strengthening ERCOT winterization regulations. Texas has seen these low temperatures before. But not for so long a period of time, nor as far south. Amarillo and Lubbock are very familiar with these low temperatures, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and Houston are not. My home near Fort Worth did not lose power. I guess I was lucky to be with the 25 million that didn’t vs the 4 million that did.

Thank God we had a generator because of hurricanes. We plugged space heaters into it and all slept in the living room. We did have to replace all of our pipes under the house. We used something called flex pipe this time.

I was in the Dallas/Fort Worth area during that time staying at my parents house as they were on vacation in Europe. My house at the time was in Vegas but I was in town to visit friends and baby sit the parents dogs. I’ve lived in Texas most of my life and it had never been that cold for that long. Power never went out and I was fine indoors but some friends didn’t have power for several days. The roads were so bad that they couldn’t come to me or me go to pick them up. The temperature for that week was lower than what I saw in Fairbanks Alaska, but we didn’t have the infrastructure to deal with it as it has never gotten that cold for that long.

While the origin of Covid is uncertain, one theory is that the Chinese were indeed working on enhancement of the lethality of bat coronaviruses (possibly with some US from the NIH,), the purpose supposedly being not to create a bioweapon but to find out how bad they could get and then find a way to counter them since it was known that they spontaneously mutate rapidly and might eventually hit on whatever nasty version the scientists cohld create on their own. The problem was, from what I’ve read, that this work wasn’t being done in a level 4 facilty as it should have been but level 3 because the viruses are common in nature. Thus, when one or more lab staff got infected with a nasty version of the virus, they took it out of the lab and infected most of the world. Covid, by the way, seems relatively benign now only because most of the human population has either been vaccinated, had Covid or both so the susceptibility to the virus that initially existed no longer does. And remember, before we all developed some immunity, one way or the other, Covid killed millions of us.

But my regular place is a few notches down but still very good. And a third the price. I'm getting too old to stand around in the heat. But I can still smoke a brisket very close to the best. I was at the Seoul Olympics and watched Joyner break both records. The crowd was stunned. I was so unbelievable. There were many many whispers about performance enhancing drugs but she passed every drug test. A year prior she wasn't even one of the top sprinters in the US so one still has to wonder. Also very surprised that Carl Lewis wasn't included in this list but agree with everyone but Rodesia since his was just one singular performance while Lewis won 4 gold medals in a single olympics.

Phelps was in 5 Olympics. His first Olympics was 2000 and he barely missed his first medal at 15. At age 19 in Athens, he basically did the same thing by as Marchand winning four individual gold medals. 2 relay golds and 2 more bronze medals he won 8 medals but then upped that in Beijing winning 8 gold. London and Tokyo tacked in a few more

The BBQ is so rich that you can't eat it EVERY day, but 3 to 4 times a month. Anticipation makes it that much more special. But there are a lot of backyard pit masters that can do equally well, it just takes practice and dedication and study. Every been around sports fanatics and all they talk about is sports? Well you get a group of BBQ fanatics and all they talk about is the ""Q". The smokers, the wood, the rub, timing, the chew, the pull, the cuts, the sauces and regions. It is something else. Hope you get to experience this someday.

We live in downtown Dallas and we had no power for 4 days. The video did not mention that a large number of State legislators are on the board of directors for the power companies and also receive millions of dollars in “contributions” to their campaigns for state and federal government offices. As of August 2024, Texas has done little to protect power and gas supplies even though the companies are reporting record profits. The state power grid is still not connected to out of state power and gas utilities and grids. Now that it’s 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.78 Celsius) with on average 51% humidity in our area, Ercot has issued warnings that there may “rolling blackouts” leaving tens of thousands of homes unable to cool inside and also preserve food. On average, Texas averages 279 heat related deaths during the summer months. It will be anyone’s guess how many Texans will die when, not if the power grid fails.
