It's a special honor to be selected as the Drum Major. They practice for years.

The "guy in the red" is the Drum Major. He is responsible for directing the band and keeping the musicians in time.

That "guy" is the drum major or field commander who is the leader of a marching band. Usually dressed in more ornate clothing is responsible for providing commands and leading them while marching and directing them when to play, the dynamic and volume and what time to keep. He gives commands verbally, through hand gestures using a whistle or a baton.

The OSU drum major has a much less important role than most because the director and two assistants are lined up on the sideline.

In High School, we did similar shows. Elements of these shows began 1 month prior to the start of school. These consisted of 3 sessions per day, the hottest part of the day (in my area sometimes 100 degrees F) was spent rehearsing inside on the music. When school began it was reduced to 2 sessions per day, each session was a minimum of 1 hr each. This effort didn’t include the home time practice on music memorizing and perfecting. Sometimes people don’t realize the hard work that goes into these shows

I live about ten minutes from the stadium. It’s a damn thing to see in person. Everyone focuses on there being 105,000 or whatever people in the place. What no one mentions is the other quarter million or so people partying outside. Edit: the guy in red is called the drum major. Also, watch script Ohio 😊

Most band kids start around the age of 11/12, with marching competitions starting around age 14. My niece plays french horn/mellophone/trumpet in High School marching and sometimes they have to learn new routines and music in a matter of a couple days.

I find it incredible that they learn it all so quickly, I could try starting to learn the steps for one of these today and still be clueless in a years time and that's without an instrument..

Playing is the easy part! I was in the marching band in high school and we learned the songs way before any performance on field so by the time we started learning the marching routine we knew the songs inside and out. I mean literally we could play the music in our sleep if we had to. Then when it came time to learn the field routine we pretty much just numbly playing our instruments without thinking about it! It’s easier than it sounds. After a few after school practices for a few hours each day it would all come together. I think when I was in the band we had over 200 members

This is the Best Marching Band and their halftime shows are epic! They usually learn the choreograph within 2 to 3 days and then practice until game day Saturday! It changes weekly and yes they are most certainly playing the instruments! The one guy standing higher than anyone usually in the center of the field he is the head of the band he has tricks up his selve they are all very talented!

American universities used to be expected to train male students as reserve military officers for call-up in the event of war or national crisis. The program still exists to a limited extent (Reserve Officer Training Corps, or ROTC -pronounced "ROT-see"). Marching bands were integral for both ceremonial and actual purposes. Different drum and bugle cadences were used for battlefield direction, for example. The bands were also established as demonstration units to show off a cadet corps' ability to march in step and execute simulated battlefield maneuvers. This heritage is the reason most band uniforms have a sort of 19th century, pseudo-military look. The truest current example of what college bands used to look like is the Texas A&M Fighting Aggie marching band. It is still composed exclusively of university cadets, wearing more contemporary military style uniforms. They're worth a watch, if you like this sort of thing.

And the rank of Drum Major came from the English army officer who commanded the Drum Corps. I haven't checked, but I would be surprised if UK military bands did not still have Drum Majors.

I love marching bands - these guys (and gals) often spend more hours practicing than the athletic teams they support. You don't need to review, but here is an 'insider' video that a member of The Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band made...he wired a GoPro camera to his helmet. There are some very impressive marching bands at HBCU schools that are definitely worth watching. HBCU is Historically Black Colleges and Universities - those guys are more serious about the marching bands than the football teams.

No offense at all bro. This was a great tribute to MJ especially for us old guys who were around during his entire career. When I was about 10 years old living in San Diego California Michael and his brother visited our boy scout camp we got to see them up close. I didn't get to meet them but they performed 20 feet in front of me. Been a big fan since then. ♠ Great reaction to the great Ohio State Marching Band. Wait until you see their Disney tribute, or their trip to London a few years ago. ♥

Yes, and if you have “The Ohio State University Marching Band” on your resume or job application, it’s a huge plus, because it tells the reader that you had the talent, motivation, and self discipline to win a spot in the most demanding college marching band in the country. It is a massive head start in the job market.
