As I have mentioned in other reaction videos, the Lord of the Rings musical direction has a small surprise, because it quotes a few fanfare bars that came not from the film score, but from Johan de Meij's 1988 "Lord of the Rings Symphony", originally scored for concert band. There are some good performances of the full symphony on KZread worth checking out.

I’m a University of Georgia grad and I love the Ohio State Buckeyes Marching Band. Both of my daughters were band weenies (their words) all through high school. It was a lot of hard work starting practice in July in South Texas. Every week day for 12 hours. They were in one of the best hs bands in Texas. My youngest was drum major her senior year and her daughter was drum major her senior year. Fun fact, throughout my younger daughters four years in high school the football team never won a game while the bandhall was filled with trophies and plaques from all of the band competitions. My youngest granddaughter begins high school band next year. She has two years behind her of learning her instrument. Funny thing is, i can barely play the radio.

We were called band and a derogatory f word for a gay person until we told them if it wasn't for us, they wouldn't have anyone cheering for them. They didn't believe us until we left one time after doing halftime. They blew a big lead and lost but, they never called us that again and apologized.

I did my Ph.D at OSU (my office was in Orton Hall) and one of the undergrads was in the band. She was also one of the best students in the department. They get one or two weeks to practice. It depends on when the bye week(s) happen(s) and when the away games are. They don't go to every away game from what I understand. They always go to play at the school up north though. Should be interesting this year, sunce both teams are undefeated AND the fact that the team up north has gotten themselves into a bit of trouble with the conference and the NCAA. But the band directors are very creative and the band members work extremely hard to get things right. They call them "TBDBITL" for a reason! I'm not an MJ fan, but their tribute to him was one of their best shows. I enjoyed the Rush tribute as well.

It's true they get only 1 week (usually) as they perform different things each weekend during the game's half-time show. The Choreography is awesome, but not as difficult as it seems (still difficult, just not as much as it seems). A few things. A marching band uses timing and music is all about time. so they know on which beat they are supposed to move to the next spot, etc. the second thing is they are on a well-marked field and can use lots of "landmarks' So they would know; for example, that on the 3rd beat you would turn to the left and then march with the left foot hitting the ground on ever other beat as you move from the 25 yard line towards the 30 on the inside hashmark... maybe over your head a little, but trust me, with land marks and timing and practice, it's not as hard as it seems, but is still hard to pull off this well.

Plus, since most of them will have been playing their instruments for a decade or longer, they can probably do the music portions in their sleep. This allows them to carry cheat sheet of their movements: "On beat X, turn 45 degrees and walk forwards for 8 beats" sort of thing. The individual band member's actions are more difficult than walking while playing, but not as much as it looks. Not that I could do this, just saying there are tricks to make it easier.

Michigan vs Ohio, over a City on the Great Lakes. That is how Michigan got the UP, the Upper Peninsula. Ohio State vs Michigan happens every year, as the last game o the season for both schools. Normally It has everything on the line, Big Ten Championship, College Football Playoffs, and a year worth of bragging rights.

I graduated Ohio State, and still live in Columbus. There is a moniker ascribed to these guys, ie TBDBITL. (The best damn band in the land). Well deserved, I think. I still think “Script Ohio” is their ultimate. Since sometime in the late 1930s, they do it at least once every game, and sometimes do four “Ohio” formations at once. (When they invite alumni band members to participate). “Dotting the i” is a great honor. There have been only a handful of non-band members who have had that privilege. Woody Hayes,Earle Bruce, John Glenn, and I can’t think of the other one or two. They don’t necessarily create these impressively elegant programs on a weekly basis. The band does make an appearance at other stadiums, when they’re the visiting team, but their repertoire at those times is pretty brief. Also, I suspect they begin to create and hone these complex formations in August, a month before the football season begins. But nonetheless, it’s awesome, right? Hoping you and your daughter will be cheering for Ohio State this coming Saturday! Ohio State versus Michigan is always the big game of the year, but this year, it’s one of the biggest ever!

Theyve gotten bigger and more grandiose over time. They use drones btw to create and practice these shows...one per every home game a year. Nobody uses DVDs anymore? Hmm! I do. It may be 2 weeks at the most that they have to learn these routines and accompanying music. But that's only if there's a weekend when the football team is playing an away game. By the way, in case Jono has forgotten, the person in white who spent a lot of time in the middle of the big 'O' is the drum major. I have to admit that it was great to hear the music during this, but it drowned out the questions you asked, which may explain why they didn't get answered. Something so funny in the Jurassic Park section is that there was a guy in white just to the upper right of the white 10. He's supposed to be a football player from U. of Michigan--the opposing team that day. The T Rex ate him, then spit out the helmet a few seconds later. By the way, this is a halftime show--only 2 more quarters to go.

Marching bands are part of what make college football so special. There's so much tradition and pagentry around the sport, and the atmosphere is so unique and personal to each university. What you heard is right, by the way, that these students learn each of these shows in a week generally. They'll get the music and drill on Monday, and have until Saturday to get it down. Ohio State is the best there is.

It looks like people answered your question about weekly performance, so I’ll give you something new….why do they do this? It is to keep everyone from rushing to the bathroom at halftime. The old stadiums didn’t have the infrastructure to accommodate that many flushes, so halftime shows were created to make people stay in their seats. A little bonus trivia for you ;)

Most miss the 'eye of Sauron' as it's hard to hear and most are still trying to process what they just saw 😀😀

I grew up in Columbus, where the Buckeyes are, and went to that uni as well. I also was in a marching band ( not TBDBITL ) and studied a lot of music. I hope your daughter gets to experience some of that. I taught my girl music too.

Jono Texas High Schools have marching bands. They perform at half-time also, these kids are amazing, and put on a great show. Football games are once a week and, the bands will be ready with a new show.

Great video! Your daughter is as much fun to watch as you are Jono! Keep up the great work! I remember seeing Grambling State's marching band's halftime show on TV when I was young, and ever since then I have always loved their high energy shows because the entire band usually gets into the action with dancing as well as playing. They are such fun to watch, even if they're not on the huge scale that big universities like Ohio State are (Grambling is what is called a 'historically black college", a smaller college with fewer than 5,000 students compared to Ohio State's 66,000 students) they still put on a great show. They post their halftime performances to KZread, and you might enjoy checking them out, even if it's not for a reaction. Their football program was also well known for having had the same head coach, Eddie Robinson, for almost six decades, starting in the 1940s and retiring in the 1990s. He had amazing success too, with 40+ winning seasons and having several players become successful NFL players, including at least one in the NFL Hall of Fame.

While it holds over 102,000, Ohio Stadium is only the fourth-largest on-campus stadium in the USA. Michigan Stadium tops that list with 107,000+ seats and a maximum attendance of 115,000+. The stadium, nicknamed "The Big House," is expanded whenever another school threatens Michigan's spot atop the list.

It shows some junior events I dont think they've seen, like bucking broncos (male and female) and even junior bull riding. And towards the end they briefly show trick riding (junior girls). They show adults too so enjoyable for all 3 of u 😊

The one you missed is the lord of the rings. Also if you like this every college in the state performs at halftime of every football game. Usually they have two weeks in between home games to practice and most times when you see this video they are well into there season and have mastered there performance and are ready for their own competitions.

Generally the percussion and bass instruments are towards the rear of any musical presentation. They do not want to drown out the woodwinds that are usually providing the melody, in addition to the percussion being necessary to the other musicians’ as this helps them stay in time with the tempo.

The one with the 2 big circles was lord of the Rings (I think). The game they play in Harry Potter is quidditch and the small gold ball with wings is the golden snitch. This is usually halftime entertainment when the band performs. The other school was Univ. of Michigan. That's who they were playing that day. All of the band members are of course students. Many of the big college bands have 3 to 4 hundred members or more.
