I was never a "band guy", I played baseball and football. It wasn't till high school and I saw how hard those kids worked that I had to respect them as athletes too. They practiced in 100° heat, ran laps in their uniforms, did push-ups, stood for hours practicing and marching, respect to them

Not sure about the running laps thing, but yes, we did practice for all of August in 100-degree heat, learning the routines and playing the songs until we got them right. The reward? Eternal glory, of course. Plus, the band was co-ed.

@@johnalden5821 high school we ran to the practice field, then ran laps. After that, marched up and down student parking lot that was marked as a football field (made for interesting parking), then practiced the show. Luckily (ha!), our practice was for 7am. However, this was New Orleans, so take that as you will. We could NOT have sheet music (hardly any NOLA h.s. bands did). You were expected to know ALL the songs (even in stands or for Mardi Gras . Concert band was exception) and your steps. And knees up at 90° parallel to ground, toes pointed, and roll down ball. And you better be playing and know your steps. Mardi Gras parades were at least 5 miles & yep, no such thing as tired. Play! But I loved it. I was in best shape and my legs rivaled cheerleaders or track team. Now, under wool uniforms, we had band shirts & you had to wear gym shorts. This was in case you got overheated, you could be undressed . I didn't march in college. Couldn't afford to. Plus, a long story.

In case anyone hasn't already explained (I didn't see it in the comments so far), I was in band (not Ohio State's, obvs) and can explain the shapes. Each person memorizes a book of moves called "sets" or "dots" which lays out exactly where each person is supposed to be at any given moment during the show. You basically march to spot A, hold until the next move, move to spot B, and so on until the show is done. All while playing cleanly the music you already memorized, maintaining proper body posture, remaining in-step with everyone, watching the drum major, etc. If even one person is slightly out of place, the shape can start to look off and weird and it can ruin the whole effect. Everyone has to be perfect. Where it gets interesting is that some moves are really close and you basically tip-toe over to them, while some make you literally jog across the field to get to them, while still playing and being in-step. Imagine jogging every minute or two while constantly exhaling. It's incredibly fun, but incredibly difficult. EDIT: You should react to Drum Corps bands. It's a whole 'nother level. Try "Blue Devils Space Chords" or "Carolina Crown's Hornline Drops The Hammer in Houston" if you wanna be blown away by the power of massed horn lines.

This is a halftime show done between the first and second halves of a football game. The band that came off of the field at the beginning of the video was the opposing team's band. It is marching band etiquette that the opposing team's band goes first. Unless it is Homecoming, in which case, the home team takes the entire halftime for Homecoming performances and ceremonies.

I was in a marching band of ~300 in high school. Our band director, David Rosethal (RIP), got all of our routines from these types of college marching bands. It was the most grueling training as a teenager. We had to practice for one month before school started. Meaning our summer break was cut short due to training. Mr. Rosenthal taught us to be professional, multi-task, discipline, and strive for perfection. We were one of the best marching bands in Louisiana. We even marched in Mardi-gras parades. Was some of the best memories I have as a teen.

As a former Iowa State University marching band member, I love seeing the recognition and appreciation for the massive amount of hard work and dedication it takes to perform in a marching band. When I was a member of the ISUCF"V"MB, the class was only 0.5 credits, was 1.5 hours of rehearsal M-F, 2 hours of morning practice on game day, & 6-8 hours for tailgate/pre-game/stand tunes/halftime/aftergame performances. In contrast the typical college course at ISU is 3 credits, 50 min MWF, & ~6-9 hours of homework time. We honestly put in more hours per credit hour for marching band than we did any other course in our college careers and most of us did it just because we love marching band (there were actually very few music majors in our marching band at that time). I'd love to see more marching band reaction videos, but I must admit that I am biased. Thank you for the wonderful video!

The band people use the yard markers and other visual landmarks on the field and in the stadium to help orient themselves while marching. By the time they begin playing in a marching band such as this most of them have been playing an instrument for at least 6 years and have been marching up to four years prior (years 9, 10, 11, &12 in High School). They must try out for a band of this caliber. They all take a full load of classes each week and usually spend about 15 ish hours in class and double the hours out of class for studying So they are taking about 5-7 classes a semester (each class being 3-4 hours each). The band spends about 20-30 hours per week during football season practicing. Most bands begin during the summer to learn the music and formations. The students are then given a certain amount of time to learn the music and formations (not very much time). These students practice many hours outside of the 20-30 hours per week practicing on their own, by sections such as all trombones or all trumpets, or in small groups. Many of the students also take private lessons in their chosen instrument during the week. So they attend class, study, practice as a group and separately. In other words, they don't sleep much during the fall semester each year (LOL) They also travel to all of the games that are played away from their home stadium. During the holiday season the band may be invited to march and play in one or another of the very large televised parades for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years Day. Luckily the parades don't require the fancy formations while they march, however some of the parades can be 3-4 miles long. The oldest marching band in the one associated with Notre Dame University. It began around 1845. Have you seen the Texas A & M Aggie Band? they are something. Not as fancy as one like this but their marching cannot be beat.

I did marching band in high school. Nobody knew what shape they are making at any given moment. Each person is only concerned with their own moves. They knew something like "I'm at 45 yard line, 4 steps behind the back hash and I have 16 steps to get to 43 yard line 5 steps in front of the back hash." The hash is the little marks between the 5 yard lines. The band director made tons of charts and passes them out to everyone and they had to find their number on the chart and track their own movements. We would keep a little book in our pocket during practice that would contain a handwritten list of moves we had to do. In high school we would learn 1 show for the season, college bands learn a new show for every college home game.

As a former "band geek" in high school. The hours of practice and dedication fly by because you're having fun with family. Being in the band is being part of a family. We'd get the sheet music at the end of June the end of the previous school year in the school system I was in. Spend July practicing and starting to memorize. Then the 2nd week of August is when band camp would begin. The first year marchers (freshman and upper classmen who hadn't been in the marching band before) would do 3 four days (m,t,w) to learn the commands and steps for marching and then the rest of the band comes back for Thursday and Friday. Thursday and Friday was 4 hours of marching practice in the morning, a 30 minute lunch, then 2 hours of music rehearsal with the full band. Then a week of 12 hour days of marching and music practice with breaks for lunch, mid afternoon, and dinner. Then the final week before school was 3 hour practices under the lights in the stadium. Then every week until the end of football and marching band competition was 2 hours on Tuesday afternoons, 3 hours on Wednesday nights in the stadium under the lights, then 2.5 hours on Thursdays. Then you had the football games and competitions. Competitions were 2-4 hours of rehearsal before food and getting on the bus to go the competition. Needless to say we spent so much time together that it wasn't just friends you were part of a family. Everyone knew everyone and you strived together as a band and a team. It was loads of fun and a blast despite the brutal heat in the summer and the early part of the season...wool uniforms in 100+ degree (Fahrenheit) heat suck.....but the wool uniforms were amazing and warm in the later part of the season when we could see 20 degree (Fahrenheit) temps sometimes.

To start out, we do actually do this outside of the game but normally it's for a school vs. school competition called UIL where there is no football game before or after. It is just each band going into a field of only spectators who sit completely quiet throughout the whole performance until each band is done. The crowd must remain completely silent because there are judges who are listening to our music/general effect, watching the visual performance/visual effect, listening to percussion, listening to axillary, and one judge watching timing and marking penalties. The band normally comes out during Half Time which is a break between the 1st and 2nd half of the game for the players and the fans. This is usually a high-stakes-game and is the pinnacle of most of our band careers, so it is a big deal. The band comes out to give a 'show' to everyone while the fans get their food, drinks, and wait until the beginning of the 2nd half of the game starts after Half Time. We normally practice the music in the band hall until we get that down by heart before practicing our movements on the field. Also, the band begins practice during the beginning of summer which can last for half if not 3 quarters of the whole day either all week (not weekends) or just whatever your band director tells you. We also get 'charts' which show the football field (or parking lot for when I was practicing in band). These charts would have dots on them where you are supposed to be at every measure or so, or just were big pieces are (depends on the music/performance/director). We go through each section of the performance over and over and over again until we are perfectly in line, on time, and in sync. You can spend hours out on the field practicing the same section over and over again. If you don't practice that much, you are liable to miss your steps, placement, or even step/fall on someone. One person out of place can ruin the whole picture so we need to have it drilled into our heads until it becomes muscle memory. (P.S sorry for the long rant)

As a Wolverine, I find it difficult to praise the school down south, Ohio. However, I've discovered that everywhere in the world there is some tradition that is better than any other place in the world. The English breaking for tea in the afternoon... nowhere else can beat it. Spain's tradition of a siesta after lunch... so civilized. Italian opera. You get the idea. Ohio's band has a tradition that eclipses anything else in college football and it isn't this halftime show. Although the formation I am about describe was first done by Michigan's marching band to welcome the buckeyes to the Big House {look it up, buckeyes}, Ohio's band doing Script Ohio before the game is superb. The band writes out Ohio in script topped off by a person running out to dot the "i" -- usually a Tuba player, but not always -- that is unmatched. So far I have not seen a television attempt to cover this tradition that gets it at all. One time Fox focused on single players. That was the very lamest version of broadcasting Script Ohio. They tried again by photographing the band from ground level on the field. So I recommend you search KZread for Script Ohio. There are some great versions here. Besides the band's version, I loved the guy who writes out Script Ohio in his snowy backyard with his snow blower! Great version! Check it out.

The association of people and their state or local universities is a great source of pride and the fans are life long and generational. Both of my children attended the Univ of Washington but I attended UCLA so there are ususally some hurt feelings when those schools get together. Lately UW has been eating our lunch at UCLA, but better times are on the horizon. UCLA played its first football game of the season and dominated Hawaii 44-10. I think the American football field is ideal for this type of coordination. Because of all the yardage markers, they can use them for reference.

In high school I was in Color Guard (flags, sabers, and rifles) and the passion and dedication to make sure everything was perfect is a lot. And remember, we’re doing routines and tossing flags and such in the air while walking through formations that the band is making along with ours. Imagine having a panic that a rifle will hit someone in the head if you don’t get to your spot on time. Games are usually practice takes for the real deal at competitions. It’s where we fix the little things or even change and learn a whole new set of things don’t look right. And that’s after months of practice learning the spots while still learning the music and routines. We are 100% athletes. When the football team has their summer practice we would be learning our stuff. It also helps if you like football because the atmosphere in the stadium always makes you want to do the best you can.

When I showed horses at the Quarter Horse Congress at the Ohio State Fairgrounds each October we could hear the marching band on gamedays. So cool to hear them!

You should watch the show they did for an NFL game at Wembly Stadium a few years back, it's one of their best ever. And/or maybe a pre-game show, the tradition that begins each home game. For well over a century now, EVERY major advancement in the state of the art for marching bands has come from this band: the strutting drum major, pictorial formations, floating formations, animated formations, charting formations so members know where to be, first on a tabletop, then on paper distributed to each member, finally now animated on iPads that each player carries during marching rehearsals.

I was drum major for my high school marching band in 1988. They sent us to Indiana University of Pennsylvania for summer band camp (joke if you like, "one time, at band camp", lol!). That area of the country, Western PA, Ohio, the Midwest, takes Marching Band very seriously as a source of school pride. Our school wasn't the best, but we competed in many regional NYS competitions. You use the marks on the field as a grid to know where you need to be, and the rest of it comes from hitting your anchors and a huge amount of trusting that folks will GET OUT OF THE WAY. We are told when in competition that there will be judges down on the field taking notes about the angles of our horns, the crispness of our movements, the way we stick our positions, and change directions, our intonation and musicality, etc. The only trouble is that the judges don't know which way you will be moving, so we are instructed that if someone gets in the way, run 'em over. I watched as the sudden snap-turns of trombonists clocked and knocked over judges all the time. Good memories. Good memories all around for Marching Band. Worth watching from year to year, because there are 'fads' in the universities that do the competitive works. Find schools that add in competitive Drum Lines and you understand how Band Kids frequently out-perform the sports teams they are supposedly 'supporting'. ;) My marching band got to march through Epcot Center in Orlando my Senior Year (Year 12, final year, age 17), and I got to be Drum Major (conductor on the field) for it. Still a memory of honor for my golden years coming up. LOL. Fun stuff.

The guy in the middle is called the Drum Major; his stick with a ball on the end is called a baton. Field marching is also different than street marching. In field marching you lift your leg with the knee on the raised leg high and exaggerated. Street marching uses more straight legs. Players on the outside must take huge steps and players in the middle tiny steps in field performances. A good marching band will have every player in perfect step and alignment; lines, columns, and diagonals. A good band requires all players to memorize the music so they aren't trying to read music while marching. Cold temperatures are especially hard, especially for brass players, and tend to cause the pitch to go flat off key. You'll notice brass players constantly blowing warm air through their instruments to keep from going flat.

I was in marching band in high school. It's a lot of work, but so much fun. I also didn't have to take P. E. because I got P. E. credit for marching. We spent countless hours on the field practicing for shows, and many more hours in the rehearsal hall practicing the music, before combining them for the shows. Then there were the competitions and that schedule could be brutal too. Especially on top of a regular school schedule. I didn't do band in college, but I can imagine how much time and dedication those men and women put into that show. These shows are at half time. They're always an event.

High school we ran to the practice field, then ran laps. Concert band was exception) and your steps (a different field show EVERY week). I didn't march in college.(LSU) Couldn't afford to- needed to work. Plus, where I had a band scholly, things got messed up - a long story. I went to school in the 90s, but there's videos of us on KZread . I can tell where I marched on field!

Some interesting facts about TBDBITL... they memorize all their music - no marching with sheet music! Considered the largest all brass and percussion band in the world - 225 strong. All band members have to 'compete' for their spot every week. They have been giving me chills for 55 years now... lol. Enjoyed the video... thanks!

They are great, the big M on the flag was for Michigan Wolverines their biggest rival,so of corse they sank it.The football stadiums are only 160 miles apart so they get a lot of each other’s fans at when they play at either stadium.I know in my home state that’s the big deal at the State Fair is Band Week where the high school bands compete for the state title,my high school class 4A had won it 17 times before the school closed and became junior high only. Its fun to go watch and see what a school with 30 band members can do,small school compared to schools with as many as 300 band members. They compete in their own class from 1A-5A schools.
