This rivalry means everything to the people involved. It shapes our culture. The outcome of the game almost has an affect on your mood for the rest of the year until they play again. All the work leads up to this final game. The atmosphere in either Ann Arbor or Columbus is electric. It's the best college rivalry of all time, and arguably in all of sports.

Only game that could rival the importance of this one is Army/Navy. The history of that rivalry is insane. While both teams usually aren't in the hunt for anything, there's a reason why they usually get their own weekend at the end of the season to be the only teams on TV. BEAT NAVY!!!!

I've never even been to state of Ohio or Michigan but I never miss this game. I thought Ohio state was going to smash Michigan. I was rooting for Michigan the whole time, though I have no stake in who wins. Ohio state is such a powerhouse and they beat the crap out of everybody all the time. The #10's are different players. You can have multiple of the same number as long as they aren't on the field at the same time. Most teams have over 100 players so you have to repeat at some point. Not all of the players are on scholarship either. A lot of the 3rd strings and lower are walk-ons

I will add to this that sometimes on special teams (kickoffs for example) you might have two players with the same number (one maybe normally defensive and one offensive). If that happens, one player must change his jersey for that play, or else the team takes a penalty. It happens sometimes.

Michigan was a big underdog going into it with the best RB on the team coming into the game very uncertain with a high knee injury. Edwards is actually the number 2 RB playing with a cast in one hand. JJ the QB has struggled all year with the deep pass but shined in that respect. The regular season has now ended for almost all teams. Next week is conference championships then the Army Navy game is on Dec 10 you should do that one always a great game to watch. Michigan, which packs out its stadium with 115,000 in every home game, is the team with the most college football victories in history and the most national championships. The Michigan/Ohio State rivalry goes back to the 1800’s. When I was a kid in school, once a week we had “music enrichment” class which always started with the “Michigan Fight Song,” which we sang with gusto: “Hail to the victors valiant, Hail to the conquering heroes, Hail, hail, to Michigan, The champions of the West!” (even though Michigan is in the Eastern half of the US, back in the day, not many lived west of Michigan, which is why the region, including Ohio, retains the the description “the Middle West.”

Fun fact: this is the biggest rivalry in CFB. Not only that, but the name “Wolverines” comes from the “Toledo War” when Ohioans called Michiganders Wolverines because they were blood thirsty scavengers, but Michiganders adapted the name and it’s become a source of pride. Might I add you should also react to last years game, it was Michigan at home and it was amazing for a rivalry.

@@naastar2305 bruh the Iron Bowl is the equivalent to watching two random fcs teams just with a higher turnout. I watch the iron bowl every year and am almost always disappointed with the lack of just the rivalry feeling. With The Game it always feels fresh and intense. The Iron bowl is usually a predictable Alabama win while you never really know with this game. I mean, neither college will say the others name and have dedicated songs dissing each other! So yeah, Michigan vs OSU is easily the best rivalry in CFB if not sports in general. Oh, one last thing, “… when these two teams aren’t worth a damn.” The Game is consistently a top 10 matchup compared to a top 10 Alabama team vs a top 25 to unranked Auburn team. Now don’t get me wrong, the iron bowl is always fun to watch, but it doesn’t feel like the biggest rivalry, nor does it act like it. It simply feels like there’s more on the line with The Game rather than the Iron Bowl leading to a more electrifying feeling and experience.

@@lukebishop7288 idk, I'm not a fan of any of the 4 schools in this debate, but I think it's all about your personal perspective and where you are. I'm assuming you're probably either from Michigan/Ohio, or somewhere in that vicinity (but it's the internet, so you and anyone else could lie about it so it doesn't really matter I guess), and the other commenter is probably from Alabama or somewhere close. For him, this game has no meaning and no sense of rivalry in everyday life, just like you describe feeling from the iron bowl. Gotta be honest, I see no more sense of rivalry between OSU and Michigan than I do from Alabama/Auburn. It just feels like two more, as you said, "random" fcs teams playing in the eyes of someone that has never been to that area and has no dog whatsoever in the fight. I'm sure the in-person aspect adds to how the rivalry feels in both scenarios, but I've been to neither rivalry game so I can't add to that, only as an observer over the years on TV, news, and the Internet. I do know people have died and committed state and federal crimes over the iron bowl (looking at you, Harvey Updyke), and maybe there are similar stories in the OSU/Michigan rivalry. I just haven't heard about it. Just adding my 2 cents as a somewhat neutral obvserver that is not from any of the places mentioned, nor a fan of any school mentioned, and just sees them as two equally situated rivalry games in their parts of the country, as well as for various alumni and random fans scattered throughout.

In regards to your question about the #10, I saw someone else already explained about that rule. Every once in a while though you will see the same player playing on both sides of the ball. It’s very rare, but it’s notable because if you look back at Michigan’s history you’ll find a certain #2 named Charles Woodson. He is the only defensive player to ever win the Heisman trophy which is basically the MVP for college football. He was a cornerback, but he also returned kicks and occasionally played wide receiver. He was so dangerous that most of the time when he played offense he was just used as a decoy and opened up the field for other players. In the 2 seasons he played that very limited role on offense he had 9 rushes for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns, and 21 catches for 370 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was the leader of Michigan’s last national championship team in 1997. Not only was he one of the best college football players of all time, he went on to have a hall of fame career in the NFL. We can’t forget though that he was actually from Ohio and had the smarts to go to Michigan and not Ohio State 😂 Go Blue!!! You could do a reaction to his highlight reel. He had the most incredible interception I’ve ever seen against their other main rival, Michigan State.

The thing about this rivalry is how deep it goes for the states themselves. Really dating back to the mid to late 60's. There are massive momentum swings in the series, with Michigan more or less owning the 90's and Ohio State ruling for nearly 20 years through the 00's and 10's. For fans of these teams, this game is EVERYTHING. We (Michigan) have fired decent coaches that just couldn't beat Ohio State.

You had good observations. On the early throw by Stroud for Ohio State, you remarked that it looked like the Michigan defensive back had time to make a play. All in the placement of the throw, which was a classic back shoulder throw, essentially an under throw of the pass to allow the receiver to adjust and make the catch while keeping it away from the DB. Enjoyed your commentary.

Technically no. There was a dispute about the city of Toledo, which at the time was an important port city. It technically was in Michigan territory, but Ohio claimed it was there’s. Michigan at the time was not yet a state so it had no government representation. As tough talk arose the federal government decided to step in and award Ohio the city of Toledo, and in return gave Michigan the entire upper Peninsula, which is actually not connected to Michigan at all but rather Minnesota. At the time people in Michigan felt this was a bad deal as no one really lived in the harsh and cold peninsula. However, it would eventually become an important tourism and mining territory for the state. There was never any actual battles fought.

I liked your comment on that OSU sideline pass early in their first TD drive. Defensive backs are trained to play the receiver so that if he makes the catch, he won't be able to gain a lot of yards running afterwards. While looking at the play from high above the field, there are tons of plays where if the defensive back just turned around he would have an easy interception. But he almost never turns around, because doing so removes him from the position he must have in order to make a tackle after the catch. That play was a good example of a "back shoulder throw" where the defender had the receiver covered extremely well, but instead of throwing the ball downfield to hit a fast-moving receiver in stride, the QB throws it toward the sideline, and the receiver puts on the brakes, creating some room for a catch before the defender can react to that ploy. It's a planned play, and a good one.

Few sportscasters will explain that the real victory machine of this Michigan Team is THE OFFENSIVE LINE PLAY from Tight End to Tight End, all 7 Linemen all the way across, their superb passblocking and Perfect Runblocking is what makes Michigan a championship team. You did a fine job covering this, mate. You seem to have a really good understanding of the American game. This rivalry was named by ESPN as the most intense in North American sport, far exceeding even the Yankees and Red Sox. Two great programs, 180 miles apart, that do not like each other at all but share mutual respect. "The Game" often has major implications for the Big Ten Championship and sometimes, the national championship. The two penalties Ohio State had consecutively enforced in the third quarter seemed to be the turning point. Ohio State was executing well until then, and the Buckeye defence did not adjust. Michigan kept its cool and made the big plays while Ohio State just fell apart. For me, though, it was another amazing game to watch. Go Blue!!

This is a great video. I have lived overseas and it’s really hard to explain this rivalry because sports just don’t work this way anywhere else in the world. These aren’t even professionals. A lot of these players are never going to make a dime outside of the endorsements they can now get in college (which has only been a thing for two years). YET these stadiums are among the biggest in the world. There are multiple with over 100k seats. As far as this game goes, I don’t know if I can compare it to anything in association football. It only happens once a year, but it’s every year. So it’s not really like Man City vs Man U (which I believe happens twice a season) or like the World Cup because those matches aren’t guaranteed. Multiple coaches have been hired and fired with this game in mind. Frankly a national championship isn’t even as big as winning this game for most fans. As far as this game goes, I can compare it to when Man City finally overtook Man U as Premier League champions in… I want to say 2013. It’s been 22 years since Michigan won in Ohio State’s stadium. They dominated the rivalry for like 20 years.

This was a huge game! The Michigan vs Ohio State rivalry is legendary. But Michigan hadn’t won at Ohio State since 2000. So beating them not only 2 years in a row, but at home, with both teams undefeated and in the running for the national championship made this victory even sweeter. It’s no wonder so many people watch this game every year. Michigan’s defense contained an explosive Ohio State offense. And the one play when Sainristil perfectly knocked the ball out of Stover’s hands in the end zone is even more impressive considering Sainristil played offense the last 3 years as a wide receiver. Michigan lost a lot of our defenders this year and he was asked to switch to a defensive back. And Donovan Edwards, who had the 2 long rushing TDs (75 yards and 85 yards) was essentially playing with one hand. He had a partial cast on his other hand. But we were playing without Blake Corum, our best offensive player, so it was fantastic to see so many players step up and play with so much heart. They took the wind out of Ohio State’s sails. Michigan plays this weekend in the Big Ten Conference Championship against Purdue. And the games this weekend will determine the 4 teams who play for the National Championship. Right now the rankings are: 1) Georgia (12-0) 2) Michigan (12-0) 3) TCU (12-0) 4) USC (11-1) Ohio State is in 5th place (11-1), so they would need 1 or 2 teams to lose to make it to the playoffs. Go Blue!! 😼

This is the biggest rivalry in college football. As the announcers said, it is "The Game". . This rivalry goes back more than a century for football, but the rivalry between the two states is also intense. The states of Ohio and Michigan fought a war (yes, with guns) back in the 1800's over disputed territory. . Just my opinion, but Ohio State has a more talented team than the Wolverines, but they REALLY blew the coverages downfield and McCarthy (Michigan QB) was throwing bombs and hitting targets all day. . Michigan was playing without their star running back, #2, Blake Corum, but they still pulled it off. McCarthy (QB) ran more this game than I've ever seen, and this guy will run helmet-down straight into tacklers, rare for a QB, balllsy. . Also, this was the first time Michigan beat Ohio State AT Ohio State since 2000. . Enjoyed the reaction. Thank you.

This is not just the biggest rivalry in football. It's the biggest rivalry between any 2 teams of any sport in America. Two fan bases that literally hate each other. When a Michigan fan goes to OSU to watch the game there's a great likelihood they will be assaulted, or at the very least have things thrown at them. OSU fans won't even acknowledge the existence of Michigan, they refer to the Wolverines as that team from up North, and will never say their name. As someone that lives in Michigan I have lived through this rivalry and I cannot stress enough the significance of what you just watched. OSU has been the better team for quite a long time, until now. Two consecutive wins by Michigan have not happened for over 20 years. Michigan has taken their pride back and not only beat OSU but tore their heart out by knocking them out of the playoffs, and taking their spot for 2 straight years. Hail to the victors!

@Mark rapacki that record goes all the way back to 1887. In the last 22 years Michigan is 4-18, that includes the Michigan wins last weekend and last year. It's been so dominating that it became difficult to call it a rivalry when one team dominated another for so long. Competition feeds a rivalry. UM is finally showing signs of being competitive again and and has reignited the fire in this rivalry. But to be honest, UM has to win next year as well to show they have become a contender again because of the horrible record they've had the past 22 years. OSU has had 2 winning streaks of 6 and 8 in a row since 2000 so 2 games is a small drop in a big bucket. It has been great watching them win the last 2 years but that is nothing compared to what OSU has accomplished. UM needs to sustain this level for a long time to stay as a contender in this rivalry. Yes, Michigan holds the all-time edge, but OSU has owned the last 20 years. I'm a huge Wolverine fan and I never jumped ship, but this is the reality of the situation. 20 million people watched this last game because although Michigan has been the underdog these last 2 years they have shown that they can win which makes them competitive again and restores this to the rivalry everyone wants to watch. 20 million viewers is more than all of the Stanley cup final games, NBA championship games, and MLB championship games. Michigan is finally showing some signs of life, renewing the rivalry and making this match up "the game" that all football fans in the country want to watch again. But all of that goes away if OSU hangs another long winning streak in the near future..

There is a much smaller college in Ohio called "Ohio University." Their mascot is the Bobcat. Just to confuse things more... There is also a Michigan State University in the same conference who are the Spartans. Michigan State's colors are Green & White. Ohio State are the Buckeyes. Ohio is known as the "Buckeye State." I guess, in the early 1800s, there were a lot of Buckeye trees in Ohio. The Buckeye is a non-edible tree nut that has a big circle on one side. It resembles the eyes of an adult, male, deer (also known as a Buck). Hence, the name Buckeye. Wolverines are a particularly bad tempered badger. The first French fur trappers who encountered them lost fingers trying to get them out of their traps. Tom Brady, of the NFL, was a QB at University of Michigan. The coach of the Wolverines, Jim Harbaugh, is a former Wolverine QB and was once the coach of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. He took them to the SuperBowl with Colin Kaepernick where he lost to his brother, John Harbaugh, and the Baltimore Ravens.

So... This may be a little confusing for non-Americans (and for many Americans as well.) Many states in the US have both a University of (insert state name here) and a (insert state name) State University. Almost all of them are publicly funded universities. (There may be one or two "University of..." schools that are actually privately funded, but the vast majority are public schools.) Most (not all) of the "University of...." Schools are older and were often established before the territory even became a state. University of Michigan was established by the governing body of Michigan territory (or Michigania) in 1817, but Michigan didn't become a state until 1837. (fill in the blank) State Universities and (fill in the blank) A&M Universities were established by an act of the US Federal government to promote Agricultural, Farming, and Mining education and research. (A&M stands for "Agricultural & Mining.") The US was mostly an Agrarian economy before the Civil War. They are known as "Land Grant Universities." The federal government owned some land in every state or territory. It granted that land to the states providing that they sell that land to fund a State University. Both University of Michigan and Michigan State University are public colleges. Michigan State is a Land Grant University. Both Ohio State University and Ohio University (aka University of Ohio) are public universities. Ohio State is a Land Grant university. Same holds true for Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, etc... etc... However... Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) is a public Land Grant university, but University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is a privately funded Ivy League university. UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) is a public Land Grant university as is California State University. University of Southern California (USC), however, is a privately funded university. Phew..... OK.... That was a long-winded explanation. Don't ask me to explain IUP aka Indiana University of Pennsylvania or how Case-Western Reserve University got its name from Northern Ohio once being part of Connecticut as promised by King Charles II.

The two powerhouses of the Big Ten Conference have been playing each other since 1897, and the 2022 edition was the 118th game between the two schools. Michigan leads the series with 60 wins to Ohio State's 51 wins, and there have been 6 draws. Glad you got to hear the game called by the great Gus Johnson. By the way, it's Ohio STATE. There is also the Ohio University Bobcats, who play in the Mid-America Conference, and would be referred to as "Ohio".

To give you a better frame of reference, this is our Thanksgiving weekend. In Michigan, our professional football team the Lions (basically the biggest losers in NFL history over time but we still love them.) always traditionally play on Thanksgiving. It has been a tradition in Detroit since the 1930s. That game kicks off at 12:30pm as is tradition and there is a parade beforehand. It is perhaps the biggest weekend of the year in Michigan. AFTER Thanksgiving (the Thursday of THIS week), the Michigan High School Athletic Association (i think it would be secondary for you guys? 14-18 year Olds) holds their state championships for their eight different divisions on the same exact field on the Friday and Saturday (during this game!). They go from division 8 (tiny, like less than 1,000 people sized town schools) to Division 1 (almost 10,000 students per school for example), four each day. Add that to this game and all of the other big games and there's still a full slate of Sunday NFL games too. I personally call it "Football Weekend in America". It doesn't get any better than this to us. And Ohio State has whooped our behinds before last year for over a decade, essentially. This is Michigan's first win AT Ohio since 2000.

Eww no. Neither of these teams have as shameful of a history. I'd say more United v. Liverpool, with Michigan being like United in that they are the winningest team in history, but have been embarrassing since early to mid 2000s.

As a Michigan fan, this game is THE game of the year, bigger than any other rivalry, and bigger than the bowl games, college or professional. Huge rivalry, lots of history. Fuck Buckeyes, GO BLUE!

Worth noting, this is probably the only time an American sports rivalry approaches the level of English Football rivalries, I used to hear stories growing up of actual property damage going on from both sides. To the point i heard some people had to rent a car just across the state border so it had a local license plate and the car the person owned wouldn't be close enough to the game to get its windows bashed in.

1:35 That receiver is Marvin Harrison Jr, pretty easily the best wide receiver in college football right now. The Michigan cornerback, DJ Turner, is playing man to man coverage with no safety help, meaning he is solely responsible for stopping Harrison on this play. In man to man coverage, the corner plays reactionary to the receiver to stay in front of them. This essentially means the corner isn’t looking at anything else other than the receiver (unless they want to be greedy and ball-watch, which would be a very risky move guarding Harrison). So, the only way that Turner knows when the ball is coming is when Harrison turns and looks for the ball. So when Harrison is running his route, he strategically waits until the very last second before the ball arrives to stop on a dime and make a catch, leaving Turner with virtually no window to break up the pass. It should also be mentioned that OSU’s qb made a beautiful pass towards the sideline, placing the ball low and at Harrison’s outside shoulder, making it impossible for the corner to break up unless he literally runs through Harrison. Great plays made by great players, but ultimately it wasn’t enough. Cheers from Ann Arbor and go blue〽️〽️

On College teams, there are usually a lot more players than most other sports. Michigan's football team usually has around 130-135 players. So, some players will share numbers, usually 1 on offense and 1 on defense. They can not be on the same field at the time though, so there have been instances where players would switch jerseys so the 2 players with the same number could legally play during the same play.

One thing you might not know about this game, it’s more than 2 vs 3. It’s more than 11-0 vs 11-0. It’s “The Game,” Michigan vs Ohio State, the best rivalry in college sports. These teams hate each other down to their DNA.

It’s only touted because the two teams have always been great teams. Harvard-Yale is an even bigger rivalry but nobody cares (about the football game that is) because they both suck.

@@jyashin Not remotely bigger, except of course to their own tiny pool of students and alums. No one in New Haven CT who isn’t associated with Yale is remotely interested in or even aware of their rivalry game. Whereas all of Ann Arbor and Detroit metro are passionate about The Game. Even more so for Columbus. Both teams have huge state and national followings and The Game routinely breaks tv ratings for most watched college sports event in regular season.

3:55 the reason facemask penalties are so serious: With how fast defense and offense could potentially be running past each other, grabbing the facemask carries a dire risk for neck injury.

That TD pass under pressure midway through the second quarter was the turning point. Until then, OSU was imposing its arrogant will against Michigan.

Michigan man here and love your comments. There is a reason they call this the game. There are none like it. Rare is a whooping like this one, like never. These two teams reallllly respect each other and frankly I route for OSU except this game. It is very possible these two will meet again this year, if USC loses big. I think Purdue will lose and go to the Rose bowl. They should at least.

There are some capable starters and stars on the team that play both sides of the ball. When I was a nose gaurd junior in HS we had a player that was basically a sub for every position on the field and knew all play books

9:39 You can have multiple people with the same number as long as they aren’t on the field at the same time. The players number is typically based on position. 1-19 is anyone except linemen, 20-49 is receivers, running backs, linebackers, and defensive backs, 50-79 is linemen, 80-89 is receivers and running backs, 90-99 is defensive linemen and linebackers

12:18 trick play, shows the running back being handed the ball, but then he makes a jump pass himself. It forced the defense to jam the pocket to stop the run, opening the back field for the catch.

The reason this game and other games between bordering states are so important is because of recruiting. A lot of high school football players who could go to either school May make their decision based on the winner of this game.

This was the first video of yours, that I have seen. But I already subscribed!! Hope to see more videos on college football. (Edit) Maybe you could react to Oklahoma vs Oklahoma state. Oklahoma hasn’t had the best season 😢 but that was a really good game.

Loved your reaction British Guy. I also understand the attraction to the "red kits" as you put it for a Man U guy, but let's make a deal here... I bought a Johnny Marr Jaguar and the case is lined in what he calls Man City Blue. Being a UM fan I'm like "blue? Cool, I guess I like Man City" and decided to start following Premier. I'm not invested yet. If you show the good sense to be a Wolverine fan maybe I'll give Man U a look. :)
