Roasting a Burundi Coffee with Whirley Pop (Victorio Stovepop)

This Burundi roast was a perfect City to City+. The full roast time was 6 total minutes.
If you'd like to pick up the Whirley Pop, I recommend getting the Victorio brand, as it's much more durable and makes less noise.

Looks like you're getting some pretty terrific results, I'm surprised by the uniformity in the roast, looks very even. The only thing I'll add is that I've always understood city roast to mean medium roast and that does look like a medium roast you've produced here to my eyes. I can't stand the trend towards true light roasted, citrusy tasting coffee that's taken over everywhere in recent years, in which the bean still has a pale yellow/orange/tan color. This is just criminally under roasted coffee if you ask me. Coffee should not taste like grapefruit damn it!

Haha! City roast might be used as a marketing term, but in the coffee roasting world there are really only 4 ways to categorize a roast. City = Light roast(just past first crack), City + = light to medium roast, Full City = medium to dark roast, Full City + = dark roast (sometimes referred to as French or Italian roast). So when I mention a city to city + roast, it generally means it's somewhere between a light to medium roast level. I love light roast BTW! If I can taste grapefruit in my coffee, that's a good cup. LOL! The great thing about coffee is that it's all truly subjective. You might love a French roast, but I drink my coffee black, so that would be disgusting to me. If I took my coffee with cream and sugar, a dark roast would be the way to go.

Awesome awesome video!! I have a few questions: 1) what thermometer do you use - would you recommend? 2) how are you roasting inside - doesnt it set off alarm? 3) is it okay to let beans cool down without fan? 4) do you recommend gas stovetop as opposed to electric? 5) was the whirley pop you used in other video aluminum or stainless steel? Thank you!! Reuven

-So sorry for not responding. The thermometer is just a laser one from Home Depot. Cost me $10. -Roasting inside can be tricky with the smoke. I open all the windows and back door. Don't usually have problem with the alarm going off. -I don't use a fan to cool. I use a colander. I dump the hot roast into the colander, go outside and toss it until it's cool. This gets rid of the chaf too, so I don't have worry about clean up as much. -Yes, I like gas. Electric is problematic. -Look into getting a Victorio popper. Made with stainless steel. The aluminum gets too hot too fast sometimes.
