Wow, I am doing about a pound + at a time in the whirley pop after burning up thermostats in several of the i roast series. Takes a bit longer, say 12-15 min but the added volume and mass of the coffee helps heat consistency and makes for a more even roast but I have not tried putting it in a secondary pot to even out the heat(good idea). Good video.

Cool setup. I guess I am just lame and use the default Mr popcorn popper.. not sure how you are using the thermometer fully. My cooking rack is simular but it is an oblong sieve an there is more room for the beans to spread out. I'll have to give that variety a try. And maybe even look for a hand crank popper and old pressure cooker before homeland security regulates them.

Is that just a deep fryer thermometer? What length?

It is an Ashcroft brand thermometer with a 5” or 6” stem. It has a 3” dial, and 1/2” MPT. I think you get them from either Granger, or McMaster Carr.

That was one of my first KZread videos. I did not know much about audio back then. I suppose I should re-shoot it now.

Magnus Böner nah, unless there were really important steps. I watched because of the unique setup, which was clearly audible.

Apologies for my deleted comment. I must have been drunk. Great video, thanks. I bought one as result. I was hoping not to have to buy a drill to make a hole in the popper. Could you tell me how long it takes to get to 450? Some roasters say that it's better to cook it at lower temperature in the beginning and raise the temperature gradually. Have you tried? And lastly, your roast has beautiful colors but seems just a tad on the dark side. With green beans (and no ham), I don't think it's necessary to roast them that long. Of course, it depends on the bean and your taste buds. I used to roast exactly the same way, now a little less. I still get the chocolate but more of the more subtle flavors. Thanks again.

If I was trying to avoid drilling a hole, I would use a laser thermometer. You can't rely on time, you need to know, or have a feel for the temperature. www.amazon.com/dp/B00837ZGRY/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_dlC_iEAMFbNC679WQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

That was the only part of the video recorded without a microphone. At some point I will re-shoot it, and edit it in.
