Same bean roasted on an SR540, Whirley Pop, and Bullet Roaster

Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to taste the same bean, roasted to about the same roast level, on three different home roasters...the Fresh Roast SR540, a Whirley Pop stove top popcorn popper, and an Aillio Bullet Roaster. (I roasted the Fresh Roast, the other two were from other experienced home roasters, we just exchanged the roasted coffee). The verdict? Honestly they were pretty similar. If you had given me any one of these coffees as a single cup, I probably would say "Mmm, well done, tastes like a nice, natural processed Ethiopian coffee." There were some differences in a blind, side-by-side cupping, and I had a preference, which I note in the video.
Note that this video was shot back in March 2020 but for a variety of reasons, I just now was able to edit and post. Also fwiw, I buy all my own beans and equipment, no sponsors or affiliates. Thanks for watching.

I have a FR sr800 with extension tube and waiting on the chaff screen. I love the machine and the ability to see the beans and have control over the roast. It is a great machine for the money, not too cheap and not over the top as the bullet for home roasting. I tend to like dark roast and the FR can do a good job. I also have a home made drum roaster with gas burner and it will also roast some really good coffee. I think in the future, more roasting machines will be done with hot air including commercial roasters.

Roasting coffee and the taste of coffee is always going be an individual preference. No two people like the same. You roast the way you like to get the taste you like best. No one is right and no one is wrong.

Thanks. We just roasted our second batch in the new Popper Roaster Sweet Maria's is selling. I have been roasting in a WhirleyPop since 2/2017, currently roasting 455 grams per. batch. I am very happy with my coffee from the Whirley. Useing air to roast is so different , your video helps to know what to expect.

Been using a whirlypop for almost 2 years and now I’m waiting for my bullet to ship. I’ve been watching and reading everything I can while I wait. It was a little intimidating at first but I’ll probably ignore the computer for a while and just get used to the machine. As you demonstrated I anticipate getting pretty similar results but the repeatability will be waaay better. Lol. Thanks for the video

Such a clear, concise, honest comparison. I've been roasting for 8 years now in heavy all clad sauce pan with a lid, a thin ladle (for stirring), and occasionally a heat gun. Despite a lot of successful batches I'm finally ready to try something that may allow for more consistency. My friend has been roasting on the Fresh Roast sr700 for 2-3 years and I've been really impressed with his results. So I think I'll be purchasing the sr800 for the slightly larger capacity and the extra fan and heat settings. Thanks for sharing your findings. Cheers!

@@floorpizza8074 Oh wow congrats on your new purchase! Yes I did actually I believe I've had it since the beginning of the year. Hard to keep track of time during covid. I have to say it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. Pan roasting really taught me a lot. But the fr800 allows me to take my roasting to the next level. At first I had a little buyer's remorse to be honest. I thought maybe I should have gotten a small drum roaster. But after using it for a couple of months I realized that the sr800 gives me all the control that I need. There was a little bit of a learning curve at first because I was trying to apply the roasting profiles from My Pan roasting not realizing that I was going to have to change some of my timing due to the fact that this is an air roaster. I've been able to produce some really successful batches. And I must say after the learning curve I really haven't had any real disappointments. I hope you enjoy your roaster as much as I enjoy mine. Take care and happy roasting!

Great video, really enjoy the others too! I picked up an SR800 recently and got the RazzoRoaster chaff extender as well. For me, without the extender the chaff clogs up the inner ring of the chaff collector. With the extender I’m getting beans in the chaff collector, wondering if you’ve experienced this as well?

You've probably figured it out by now, but sounds like you need to turn the fan down as the beans lose weight due to roasting you want to gradually turn the fan down so they don't JUMP so high. They need to keep moving / swirling though. Also keep in mind lowering the FAN will raise the temperatures. Some people keep the heat setting low and just adjust the temperature by using fan speed!

Another very educational video! I noticed you did some different adjustments than on other roasts. Earlier adjustment to 8,9 at 1:15 instead of 3:00. Then the additional adjustment to 7,8 at 2:10. Your roast curve looks very good. Did you have a reason for earlier adjustments and for decreasing power/heat to 8? I have just been doing your recommendation of going from 9,9 to 8,9 at 3:00 and leaving it there to the finish, which seems to work well. I do get a quick increase of air temp. reading of about 15 degrees in 15 seconds when I switch to 8,9 at 3:00. Maybe switching to 8,8 would even that out a little ?? Thanks!

Yeah, I think my electric outlet was just running weaker than usual the day I roasted, so I needed to do what amounts to a "1 1/2 fan reduction" instead my usual 1 reduction. I noticed beans were moving a lot more than usual too...i have a feeling the moisture content of the green was a bit low. The simultaneous F7P8 was to moderate the energy increase from the second fan reduction...the P8 cuts it about in half...makes the RoR look smoother too, although those big see-saw surges from fan changes don't seem to come through in the cup like a true flick. I call them fake flicks.

Regarding chaff expander, I didn't make it, I bought it from an Etsy site called RazzoRoasting, I think $20 to $25. If you like DIY projects and want to try yourself, you might contact the seller, in the past he's offered to provide specs on the mesh. When i measure the mesh, its about 1 7/8 tall (4.75 cm), the shorter piece is 3.5 inches long (9 cm), the longer piece is 13.5 inches (34.5 cm). I found the Quest and Bullet to be similar enough flavor wise, but Bullet obviously has bigger batch size and a lot more tech.

I've found Behmor and also Freshroast and probably most electric roasters DO vary based on the outlets power, some outlets are better than others, if you're in a 120v country like me this is likely the case, maybe the 220v people don't have that issue. But I found some older stove/ovens are connected to a higher power outlet and they often have a regular 120v plug on it, using those will give you the best power since it's kind of like a dedicated power line (as long as you're not also using the oven!). Other tips with the Behmor is you can lie about the your batch size, if you're putting in Half a pound or three quarters of a pound, select 1lb roast option, that way you have a higher max roast time available, you can use the + buttons as well to add more time. P1 is the highest power profile I think it just ramps straight up to 100% power, with those tips you shouldn't have any issues going to 4th crack (That's when the roaster is up in flames) so yeah, just watch it and stop it when necessary. If doing p1 profile and it's going too rapidly into first crack, I'd open the door to let some heat escape. I never really mastered that roaster though.

3:40 So are you kinda saying the development time (roast time after first crack) doesn't matter quite so much? I got an Ikawa Home roaster, which is basically a more automated / fancier FreshRoast (only 100g Capacity, but with repeatable profiles) most of the profiles (for light-medium roast) seem to hit first crack and 30 seconds later or less sometimes it's already going into the cooling phase. Surprisingly haven't noticed any grassy or under roasted notes that I've definitely gotten with more manual roasters I've played with in the past (when I messed up the roast and erred on the side of going too light, in fear of ending up with a smokey dark roast). So coffees have been turning out nice, BUT I was worried I was missing out on the coffees potential by not extending the roast a little longer and doing more of a development phase.

  • @keithpoolehomecoffeeroasti489

Well, I'd say ending bean color matters more than development time, and certainly more than development percent or time ratio. Having said that, I think development time is a more important metric to know than time in drying or time in mid phase, if trying to get details on a roast you like from someone maybe using a different machine. I also have the Ikawa home and I'd say, honestly, just try several profiles and taste, as it may difficult to even hear when first crack 'officially' starts. So 30 seconds with no under or green flavors wouldn't surprise me. I'll try to copy and paste my current favorite go-to Ikawa home profile, works great as a starting point with many or most beans.

Check out the free app from Ikawa Roasting. You don't need the actual roaster to look at the profiles. Dozens, if not hundreds, of profiles at around 5 minutes total roast time, give or take. These profiles are developed by master roasters world wide. (The roaster costs about $3,000 and only roasts about 50 grams or 2 ounces at a time, for professional sample roasting). Small batch air roasters can do wonders in a relatively short time. Give it a try, tastes great if you are into modern roast styles.
