Stovetop Popper Coffee Roasting - One Pound Batch

Roasting in a hand-cranking stovetop popcorn popper is still very popular for quite a few reasons. It's a fairly inexpensive way to start roasting your own coffee at home, it can roast a full pound batch of coffee, and you can roast darker than other methods, if that's your thing. It's also a decidedly low-tech, hands-on, sensory experience ... no tech needed really. Thompson roasts a full pound of Burundi at home on a gas range, talking though the process and offering some pointers and other insights. This is a split screen video to show the roast on the stove better - not super attractive but it helps get the information across. This is the VKP Stovetop Popcorn Popper in the video, which can work on inductive electric burners too! It's advised to have a thermometer to check the warmup temperature before adding coffee, to prevent scorching.

Thanks man. Thinking out loud here. Anyone who likes coffee and likes to cook should try this. If you love coffee and love to cook there’s absolutely no reason not to.

Im sold! Just bought the roasting stovetop starter kit. Been looking into roasting my own coffee mainly cuz it is way cheaper to buy green coffee and roast it myself. Also, it seems fun and threptic to roast it my self

I began home roasting about 4 years ago with the SR540 and now the SR800 w/extension. I saw this video and thought it would be a fun experiment to try. I bought a crank kettle and roasted some 12oz green today and it came out perfect on my first try. Thanks.

This was a great video. I bought the kit with this roaster and it came out perfect. Did a full pound on the side burner of the gas grill outside. First crack at 8:30, pulled it off at 12:15 for a full city roast. Cranked the handle the entire time and had no scorched beans.

That was great. I started with a Fresh Roast and quickly upgraded to a Behmor which has been making great coffee for more than a decade-but I have always been curious about stovetop. I am often asked how I roast coffee, and saying I use a coffee roaster sounds like a smartass answer so this is great to see and a nice reference to make confident, inexpensive recommendations. Thanks so much for sharing this start to finish.

Love love love these videos!!! I bought a victorio from you folks about a year ago and it’s been amazing! I really like the demos and especially when you show how to roast different beans. Double thumbs up!

I roast like this all the time. Great video. Best practice is to roast half a pound at a time. I’ve roasted at least 200 lbs of coffee over the last few years. I use the thermometer in the initial heat up of the pan 300 to 350 degrees. Set the timer and go. I use a stopwatch timer on my phone. Peaberry roast well because there are no flat spots on the bean/seed.

I like this. I did manually roasting for 2 years before I purchased my boehmor. With the boehmor I can never heard when the crack occurs. That is what I miss about manual roasting.

Very nice demonstration, this is the method I have been using for years and have had very good results, I have went through a few different roasters because usually the gears eventually wear out, I am very interested in the one you are selling and will go buy one now. Thanks for another fantastic video. Edit forgot to mention I use a large stainless steel bowl and a BBQ wired basket and pour from one pan to the other to eliminate the chaff and cool the beans, Such a good deal on these poppers buying mine now

I like to roast with a heavy stainless pot on induction heat. I get a grassy smell at first then it's French Toast as it yellows, then smoking and cracking. Stirring is done with a spatula, constantly. Best coffee I've ever tasted a day or two later. One half pound at a time works well for me.

COOLING THE FRESHLY ROASTED BEANS -- If you have a couple of bowls which can hold the quantity of beans with enough space to spare, you can precool them either outside or in refrigerator; and then pour the hot beans into one and pour back-and-forth between these bowls. This may cool the beans faster than spreading onto a pan first. A third bowl also helps. Pouring into the bowls also gives a good opportunity to blow most of the chaff from the beans.

Thank you. I have been roasting on stovetop for a few weeks now. I am using a stainless steel wok. I appreciate how you describe the changing of the beans, the influence of temperature and time regarding the length of first Crack.

excellent video! I finally figured out the best way for me to cool down the beans and remove the chaff. I take the popper outside to the BBQ, do the roasting there. when the beans at at that perfect stage I pour them into a metal colander and then gentle cool the beans off with my air compressor. I suspect not FDA approved but works great!

Thanks. I use this roaster and follow a similar process, although I keep the size to 1/3 pound. I'll try a larger batch next time!

Nice! This is how I roast. But with the aluminum one. And outside. I find my roast is more even by cranking about twice as fast as you are. I think this is a great way to learn how to roast using all your senses. I find a good flashlight is helpful to get a good view of the beans for keeping track of the color. Loved watching this!

Nice Roasting Demonstration for a way to roast on stove! From what I can tell, going to the end of first-crack gives a coffee which is dark roast, tastes like charcoal, and is weak in flavor.

I have been roasting in a cast iron Dutch oven with a wire whisk to stir. Do you think it’s losing too much moisture without a cover?

  • @SweetMariasCoffee

Not at all. You actually want moisture to escape as you roast.

Love the A/B camera setup but maybe you could mute the mic volume on the B cam? There's a doppler effect to the audio that makes some of the quieter sentences harder to understand

After weeks of research, I'm trying to decide between this VKP pot or an SR540 with extension tube, which will make the best-tasting coffee? That's the most important thing to me.

Honestly both roasters have the ability to produce equally delicious coffee but he SR540 will offer you more control so you will have a better shot at replicating your roasts

It's possible but due to the way the heat is distributed roasts will probably lean a little more to the brighter side.

Stovetop roasting creates a lot of smoke so it's a good idea to roast under a hood vent or near a window with a fan.
