I've been roasting my coffee on a whirly pop for over 10 years I've always done it on a hot plate out in the garage always seems to come out amazing but your tips were pretty eye opening I used to use a temperature gauge but know I just listen for 2 Crack and pull off after about a minute into 2 Crack, hot plate always on high. I will Tru on Coleman gas stove with cast iron skillet, thanks

I have the stainless steel one. I don’t modify the paddles. Have roasted over 200 lbs of coffee in mine.

Thank you! Great video! Have you tried the heavy stainless steel version of the Whirly Pop? Sweet Maria's has the VKP model, formerly Victorio brand.

What is your approximate "roasting temp?" 350? 400? ??
@educatebo3 жыл бұрын
It seems like the iron skillet would make more even heat but does it allow temperature changes to occur as needed, ie, too slow?

It does allow the temperature to change as needed. You don't need instant temperature changes. You are looking for a smooth roasting curve anyway.

Hello. Have you verified your internal temperature with the reading on your thermometer? I have an equivalent thermometer installed as you have but I'm finding there is quite a difference (90 degrees or so) between the thermometer reading and the temperature inside. I've overcooked a couple batches because the thermometer is reading about 90 degrees less than the internal temp when double checking using a temperature gun. What is your normal roasting temperature? Thanks.

No, I have not. I go by the relative change in the temperature rather than an accurate absolute temperature. Over time I have figured out where I’m at in the the roast from that thermometer. Also, I keep the heat low in the beginning to allow the water to be driven off before turning up the heat for the roasting portion. Then I listen very carefully for the first crack and the beginning of the second crack. If I end the roast at the beginning of the second crack, I have never burned a batch. I don’t really even need to watch the temperature between first and second crack. When I burn a batch, it’s always because I wasn’t listening carefully. The thermometer is just used to let me know when the water in the bean is gone.

Wendell- what did you use to make your paddles? I think that’s a great idea that I’d like to try with my whirley pop. Thanks!

I used aluminum flashing from the hardware store. It comes in a roll of about 6 in wide by 10 feet long. I also use it to make the heat shield. Happy Roasting!

How did you get the aluminum flashing to stay on?

eosme I folded an edge of the aluminum over the wire. It is a bit tricky because the wires are curved.

why don't you just put the beans in as you heat the popper? That way the water would evaporate as the beans heat up?
@wendellwatson6015

That is what I'm doing. After the stove is going, I add the beans to the roaster right away. I keep the heat low until all the water is evaporated or driven off. The bean will begin to turn yellow at this point. Then I turn the heat up for the roasting phase.

I want to see the beans. You talk a good talk. Can you walk the walk or are you afraid to spill them beans?
