    Pretty much not carrying around 20 pounds of plates. No thank you. Bet this could potentially stop m855a1 if it was brand new first shot and hadn’t been shot 50 times. 4.5 pounds is still bordering on too heavy but 3+ is more than enough ffs.

    Thanks a lot for testing this plate for us and for sharing the results! I have been looking for a test of exactly this plate for a pretty long time!! Would've been lovely if it stopped M855A1 out of the 16" barrel, I would have probably instantly ordered a set under those circumstances. They would just need to slightly increase the thickness of the ceramic strike face and maybe reduce the PE part/ padding a bit, then this plate would be almost perfect.

  • @BuffRANGE

    I've asked them to test that theory (thicker .180" ceramic and less PE) to see if how it performs. Maybe it will be an SRT plate, but I feel the m80 ball results would still meet backface

    Great review. Not sure why the level III+ ceramic is much more expensive than their level IV. I see it is a bit lighter, but I don't mind a few extra pounds to get more protection at a lower cost. After much research I see that RMA Armament is the way to go for me.

  • @cc-vg4ed

    @cc-vg4ed

    With armor ounces = pounds. Material to make lighter stuff, even if a lower level, costs must more. This is for all manufacturers. For example the RMA 1155, Hesco 4400, Highcom 4SAS7 are all similarly built and within $100 of each other as low cost level IV. They are simple to make and the material doesn't cost as much as level III+ or level III plates.

    Another good video, I like you seem to be am more interested in what I need to defeat a plate than what it will stop. Assume most threats will have milspec M193, M855 or M80 as few of us have access to enough M855A1 and M80A1 to keep rifles loaded up with the upper tier ammo. I switched my four favorite overt rifle kits to NIJ 4 when the new next door neighbor moved in and proved was a poor shot often taking up to four or five shots at deer in his back yard with max range of 75 yards to fence line using a 742 in 30-06. It's also his home defense rifle which he uses ten round mags and if we have an issue that brings us both out to investigate I was not comfortable if his lack of night vision mistook me for a threat and mag dumped on me with his '06 so my ready kits all got NIJ 4 plates. In the remote chance of a home invasion with perps wearing mid grade rifle armor or better have two plate shredders handy. Living next to my recliner is a 16" AR 10 in 7.62×51 with suppressor, binary trigger and 50 round drum of M80A1. Am a fan of 22 Nosler and have built two 18" Mk 12 Mod O/H clones and a 20" HBAR clone in the hotrod Nosler cartridge. Have some longer barrel varmint rigs in 22 Nosler but for my military clones have worked up a load using M855A1 projectiles pushed by Reloader 15 that have an average velocity out of the Mk 12 clones of 3,350 fps and shoot a little faster out of the HBAR chronographed without suppressors. Push your M855A1 pills an extra 200+ fps and they become plate eaters for most any armor a threat could wear and still be mobile. Have also loaded M855A1 projectiles in 308 cases using sabots to a velocity of 3,700 fps and keep a couple mags for each of my MBR varients on their load bearing kits as armor shredders. Can load them much faster but accuracy suffers greatly if try to get near or break 4,000 fps out of M855 or M855A1 using sabots in 308. If I remember you loaded up on M855A1 pulls when they were available at a fair price as well so if have a 22 Nosler or 224 Valkyrie may want to work up a few and test for kicks as well as loading some in sabots and pushing them really fast out of a 308. @@BuffRANGE Will look up my recipe when have some spare time and send it via PM over where the neer-do-wells hang out. Issue with sqbots they give opportunity to push light projectiles so fast with large cases most get greedy and give up when realize they can't build a rail gun. Using a powder that gives 70% case fill and 3,600 to 3,800 fps in 308 with a 1:10 twist and can stabilize them in many rifles. Works much better in brass sabots like the military uses but are almost impossible to find and my brass sabot inventory is down to just a few dozen left. Nylon sabots can be tricky so user must think outside the box as well.

    Go over to Ammunition discussion section at the neer-do-well site and have begun a thread on the subject. Had to dig through my notes and not just my recipe book to do more than name a powder and charge. Luckily Lapua used to offer a 73 grain 308 projectile in a 308 Win offering both as factory loaded and as a component. The only company that published data on the 73 grain projectile was VihtaVuori Oy with N 110, N 120 and N 130 powders. The N 110 is so fast I never tried it as afraid of a flash over with a light charge causing a KaBoom. Also gave other tips on what it takes to make nylon sabots happy. Huey

    As an FYI build something to protect your chronograph or the sabots will break stuff. I have almost always used an Oehler 35P so only had to worry about breaking sky screens. I prefer a chronograph with the extra proof channel to ensure results are correct. I did just order a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph Premium Kit so I can set up a system like yours with a monitor plus ordered a third GoPro camera and going to attempt some videos myself on oddball stuff that some folks may find of interest. Level 4 that weight 4.5 lbs surely 800$+ per plate.. where these come in at 250 ish.. if u got the 1k a plate to pay sure get the lught level 4.. but think the 1090s are the best compromise of weight/stopping/and cost... People underestimate how hard it is to walk or do anything with 16+ pnds of plates.. ur mobility goes to shit.. so ur basically a slow barely maneuverable target

    Is M856A1 interesting for penetration? Higher velocity to match M855A1 but copper core instead of steel penetrator. M855A1 is still pretty rare and expensive for civilians, but occasionally American Marksman sells M856A1.

    as far as I'm aware, I don't see any penetration advantages to the M856A1 tracer, but I could test it, if I get some. I'm thinking it would behave like the M62A1 tracer we used in the video.

How dare you be 1ft/s off on the m80, 15ft/s on the 7.62x39, way above on the m193 and a mix on the m855! "This means this plate would fail the test" Actually it would be an inconclusive test. This is also why during certification on the upcoming standard there will be extra plate samples, for this very reason.

    Very informative testing but if I may make a small (?) criticism that would be helpful to your viewers (AKA ME!) and deals with the up close video. PLEASE learn to hold the camera STEADY and try to refrain from the Zoom In/Zoom Out in such a fast fashion. I suppose if the viewer has a PC or other device they watch on, they could slow the video down and not be disturbed by the herky-jerky motion. Maybe it is just me but in MY opinion, the sketchy motion doesn't enhance the professionalism of your videos. Again, my opinion and NOT meant to be cruel or abusive but would enhance the quality of your video. PS, I enjoy your testing on Body Armor. I already own "hard" armor and it is HEAVY and while I'd REALLY like to buy the ceramic plates, extra discretionary money is not easy to come by so unless someone wants to be incredibly generous, hard armor is what I'll use if, God forbid, I should ever need it. Thanks again for all you do, Sir.

  • @BuffRANGE

    Your criticism is duly noted. I am actually going to borrow my friends gimbal and see how that translates to smoothing out me freehanding the camera. I like to use the iphone for up close shots because it hands focus, lighting and color better than my DSLR, and is so much easier to move. I thank you for the advice, I will be sure to point out when I'm using it in a video so we can see if it's any better!

    I have never been and don't intend to be shot, but there's a demo of a body armor manufacturer taking a hit at point blank range of .308 while standing on 1 foot, and he was fine. NIJ says backface over 44mm is bad juju, and this plate in official testing passes that.
