    I don't know much about armor but back in 2012 or 2013 I was helping a guy from work clean out a property he owned. The tenant had moved out and left some stuff behind. The tenant was a Marines who served in Iraq and he left behind a ceramic armor plate, no carrier or anything. I can't remember the details exactly but it had markings, expiration date. It said it expired in 2010. I didn't know armor expired at the time. Back then I didn't even know body armor could be ceramic. We were tapping on it with our knuckles trying to figure out what it was made of lol

    Body armor doesn't actually expire, at least not in the traditional sense. The reason those expiration dates are there is because micro-fractures can develop over years of constant use. Plate carriers get dropped and bump into stuff quite a bit. There are plenty of videos showing expired plates continuing to stop threats they are rated for well past the expiration date, but the date is put there because the manufacturer can't guarantee it'll uphold it's rating after withstanding abuse for that long. If you keep a plate in controlled, stable conditions it'll be fine.

    @@echo4533 Yes many of the 308, 30-06, 300WM 30-378 Weatherby, and even 300 BLK use .308 caliber bullets. The NIJ spec for M2AP calls for 2880 fps and for the most part that's unobtainable from 30-06 or even .308 without going to 26"+ barrels, and then may still be close to max pressure. So with 300 WM, I can download the same bullet to get 2,880 fps, or I can up it's charge and get up to 3,250 fps. With the 196gr Swiss P AP, I could probably get it going 3100 fps, but was downloaded to get to the VPAM 12 spec

  • @nolancurtis8826

    @nolancurtis8826

    Energy transfer is somewhat of a myth. Taking a hit would only result in damage based on penetration, or deformation. Any plate that stops a bullet without penetrating, deformation, or spalling into your neck, will only give you the equal and opposite reaction, energy wise. (The recoil of the gun it was fired from)

  • @mekingtiger9095

    @mekingtiger9095

    Жыл бұрын

    @@nolancurtis8826 The problem is that all that energy will be concentrated into *one.single.point* of the bullet which will give off far more pressure to the point hit than the stock of the gun gives to the shoulder of the gunner. Though it's still physically possible to disperse the the energy received through proper trauma plate inserts. It's just that stacking enough of them to disperse the energy of the round would make the armor so heavy and cumbersome it would be impractical to wear as of now.

It's kinda the same principle of warhammers and blunt weapons bashing against a full plate armored knight on, say, the helmet.
