Which Soft Body Armor Panel Is Best?

We purchased comparable products (All NIJ Level IIIA) from 6 different companies and took them to the range. We used a variety of guns and calibers along with some clay to help us measure backface deformation. This video shows all the details. Here are links to each of the 6 panels shown in the video:

There are of course some others out there but, what you guys should have touched on is what they're made of, polyethelene, ceramic composite or kevlar or something in between. The reason I mention this is because if ceramic composite armor gets dropped, it can crak - obviously weakening it. Regardless of that though, outstanding test. Granted, you blew through the armor with far more rounds than they're rated to take, I do agree with you, that Citizens Armor performed oustandingly well for only being IIIA rated. I woudn't hesitate at all to use that for vests. It is costly though.. Kudos to you both for doing this on your own dime. using a 357 lever action - definitely an interesting thought. Level IIIA armor is rated to stop pistols up to 44 magnum. Ummm.. shooting 357 from a rilfle is defintiely a bit more than it's rated for :) You guys were doing this test more kind of as a backpack armor test for kids backapacks which I applaud - and yes, it's a very sad state of affairs when folks start thinking of putting armor in kids backpacks. BUT, do look at some statistics please. How many kids in the past 10 years have been shot in the back with their backpack on? I can't find even one case. .... one additional small issue not taken into account of course for the case of backpack armor is "What else is in that backpack?" Any bullet has to go through that too. Interesting test. Let's not armor our kids backpacks though. Far better to give them armed protection by adults.

Yeah that type of clay is good for being a compressible media, but not for measuring backface. You need an oil based clay, and it has to be at a certain temperature to maintain the NIJ calibration :D Like you said though, the clay you used is good for showing backface.

The comments you guys were making make me think y'all don't really get the ballistics very well. A) A smaller caliber round is more likely, given good velocity, to penetrate body armor than a larger caliber. Therefore, the .357 loads out of a carbine were MORE than comparable to .44mag out of a revolver as far as defeating armor is concerned. You saying that it bothers you that the .357 showed you that a 9mm going fast enough would penetrate, is like saying you won't buy armor because the .223 went through. That shows that if you get a .22 going fast enough it will penetrate!! B) Hard cast lead is different than the soft lead used in the cores of fmj rounds. It is the BEST readilly available type of projectile for penetration. That is why it is used in bear loads, guys. Fmj's as you saw, deform considerably, and thus fail to penetrate, when striking armor. Hard cast lead bullets deform much less, allowing them better penetration. The reputation that fmj's have recieved for penetration is in comparison to hollow-point rounds that are specifically designed NOT to penetrate. The fact that most of these panels stopped hard cast .357 out of an 18" barrel is very impressive. It is quite reasonable that the stiff panel failed to do so considering its rating. The tests were very interesting and helpful, even if I am dissapointed in your analysis.

I was adding panels to my backpacks well before "consumer class bulletproof backpacks" became a thing. Scored a big rectangular level II panel with rounded corners years ago that fits the hydration area of my Rush 72 bag PERFECTLY. Like it was cut specifically for the bag. Ideally level 3a is preferred. But the fit, large coverage area, and all the shit in my go bag needing to be penetrated first combined with the fact that (hopefully) I'll be far away enough to evade > engage should the need arise. I'm confident enough that it's adequate being level 2. My boys starting kindergarten after this summer. Bess believe I'll be making sure his bag doubles as a sheild..

Soft armor can sometimes stop weak knife jabs, but are known to fail if the knife is continually pushed through. But lots of companies are now making Level 3A rigid panels out of polyethylene. Basically imagine the UHMWPE rifle plates, but thinned down to about a quarter inch and only meant to stop pistol threats. Those will stop stabbing threats. They also make what's being called "IIIA+" where a one pound 10x12 shooters cut plate will stop high velocity threats like 9mm from carbine length barrels and even 5.7. Some of them even stop subsonic 300 Blackout.

The test he did wasn't accurate because the steel target was reinforcing the soft armor panels. I shot my old police vest (Level IIIA) that had a 5"x8" Second Chance K30 special handgun threats plate in the front pouch. 5.56 55gr FMJ and 5.56 62gr M855 out of a 16" barrel both penetrated the K30 and the front and back IIIA panel.
