  • @BuffRANGE

    @BuffRANGE

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think it depends on which armor. M193 "ball" = threat to steel. M855 "ball" = threat to PE. 7.62 Ball is a concern backface deformation wise for all armor types, but currently level III addresses the use of 7.62 Ball, and the rating i feel covers that threat adequately. Now 7.62 NATO EPR "ball", vastly outperforms the above 3.

    You'd be surprised the blunt force a human body can absorb: Hardwire was doing a demo on their armor with safariland a while back and noted they could not find any instance of someone having significant injury from BFD in their armor or anyone else's in the US over the course of the last decade or two (I don't recall the specifics, but the gist was BFD on the torso isn't as big a deal as we tend to think it is)

    @@burleydad that's exceedingly rare to begin with, and usually presents in children where the chest is thin, with a specifically localized impact to cause excitation of a ventricular cell and inducing a vfib arrest. It's also worth noting this has to occur at a very specific part of the cardiac cycle to even be a possibility. By contrast, most people wearing armor are well muscled adults, and the impact, even with BFD, is being spread out over a large area, and it's often less energy being dumped in that specific spot anyway (200J+ for a line drive in a 2 inch area, vs 450J-1500J spread out over the area of the plate).

    I think it will never end. People have some perception that steel will soak up round after round. Which is certainly true depending on the round, but they can't handle advanced threats, like ceramic can :D

    Likely the Militech RF2. It stops m855a1 and has very close to edge to edge coverage. The RMA 1092 comes close to tying it but it’s strike face can’t handle m855a1 from 16”. The TSG III+ extreme is mixed in there too and it’s only downside is the reduced edge to edge coverage.
