    It seems like plates that push the 5lb threshold are more susceptible to velocity variances. It's interesting to see that the Hesco 4800 rumors are true. If that weight makes more difference, I'd say that the 4601 plate is arguably better for the weight to protection. I do have to speculate if the rear-facing foam being reduced slightly in favor of more PE or ceramic material would make a difference with the ammo spec variances.

    A little disappointing that one of the M2AP rounds went through, I suppose confirms that Hesco plates are built to meet spec with very little “overpressure” tolerance. For the weight savings I think it’s still worth it for me, but some others obviously don’t agree.

  • @BuffRANGE

    @BuffRANGE

    9 ай бұрын

    Spot on. If you look at their M2AP spec on the plate it's 2,900 fps. That's technically 10 fps BELOW the actual variance for M2AP, and it would appear they mean it. But if you wanted the lightest LVL IV possible with edge to edge, this might be it for now..

    I run the LVC version of these plates and they are super super thin. I mean like .8 inches thick or even less. It is pretty unreal. Slightly more than a BZ plate i.e. 6450. I think the reg 4800 just has more foam and this plate is meant to be an upgrade to the SOCOM SPEAR series. Your other video with the gen 5 showed that m2AP BTFOs that thing but this plate "should stop it" but sometimes might not if the velocity is fast enough to get past that V50 mark. So if you think of it as a special threat plate that can stop M2AP at contact "non CQB" distances with low caliber tungsten "m995"esque coverage it makes sense. Not gonna lie these things are way more comfy when running around as in 8k sprints compared to the super thick swiss-pap adept plates. I personally own all the plates mentioned above and that is my opinion after living with them for some time.

    Rumor mil was that Hesco designed the 4800 for the ESAPI Rev G contract, which would explain it stopping M995 but not M993. Additionally, ESAPI speqs for M2AP are 2880, if I recall correctly, which would also fall in line with these results, as well as the fact that the 4800 is one of a few commercially available plates that meets ESAPI weight reqs. Given that modern ESAPI's are standalone low end, ICW high end plates, i'd be willing to bet that the M2AP core that penetrated plate #1 might have been stopped in a IIIA backer, which would also align with DoD testing procedures.

  • @BuffRANGE

    @BuffRANGE

    9 ай бұрын

    IIRC for the ESAPI, M2AP first shot only is 3,000 fps then subsequent shots at 2,850 +- 50. I could see this plate conforming to those standards with ICW backer..

    I'd really like to see the low vis version of this plate drop tested in a carrier like the jpc/spc/LV119 starting with a full placard/admin pouch, empty placard/admin pouch, and then slick. Obviously it would fail a NIJ drop with no foam, but i really want to see how it would hold up in a more realistic fall.

  • @sw_tower8530
    @sw_tower85309 ай бұрын

    On the API rounds, have you done any study or noticed any of the plates seeming to delaminate faster? It seems on the plates that you hit with the T14's first, will typically fail on a 2nd round impact. just a super subjective observation but something I found intresting enough to share. Awesome content as always.

    Yeah, you do know hesco has to cover this thing called "Overhead" (pay for the employees and Healthcare insurance and retirement contributions) and people (and organizations) still buy this plate, as tungsten is not common enough to justify a thicker and heavier plate. @@yzhou05 It's actually a bit cheaper for mil contracts because it's purchased in bulk. The high price to commercial/civilian sales isn't without a reason. These plates made for military contracts are made of high end, proprietary materials and especially for bulk purchases with MOQs. It would be a waste to make a single pair of plates at a small profit margin and so the price needs to be high for sales to private individuals. If you've bought anything in bulk before, you'd know that the price per unit in the bulk is cheaper than buying a single unit.
