    I understand that backface deformation matters, but if I have to get shot I'd virtually ALWAYS want armor between me and the bullet. Those .338's would have felt similar to getting kicked in the chest by a horse, but it's better than a hole through your chest. That would probably still kill you, but with no armor that's almost certain death.

  • @BuffRANGE

    @BuffRANGE

    2 жыл бұрын

    Likely the difference could be in overall quality. Honeywell Spectra Shield for example has various models of UHMWPE. Some companies may not have the presses large enough to press the entire backer at once, so they press in sections, then finish bonding them with heat and vacuum in an autoclave. IMO if they take high energy rounds and stop them, and the layers remain together as much as they can, that's a win over a plate that may stop the same round but then the back face shows a HUGE softball dent, and the layers have obviously separated.

    Doesn't a suppressor weaken the velocity of the shot / ammo, or is that only because or if you're using sub sonic ammo ? But the other thing I'm wondering, is what's up with the emphasis on using an SBR. I thought the longer the barrel length, the higher the velocity of whatever cartridge you're using is. So why was he making it sound like an SBR would provide the maximum text results ? Am I incorrect on this..

  • @BuffRANGE

    @BuffRANGE

    6 ай бұрын

    Suppressors actually can increase the velocity. The material of this plate in the video is UHMWPE. That material is weak to bullets with hardened projectiles. In this case M855A1 and M855. I discovered that making those bullets only go 1000 fps (or subsonic) at times have the ability to penetrate this material. The use of the SBR was 2 fold in this video. 1. it has the proper twist rate to stabilize the subsonic ammo I made, and 2) was a good starting point to see if the plates would stop the projectile at a higher velocity. Generally speaking a LOT of UHMWPE fail to stop these rounds from 10.5" SBR velocities :D

  • @BuffRANGE

    @BuffRANGE

    2 жыл бұрын

    M855/SS109/Green Tips are all nomenclature for the same round. The green paint on "green tips" is a us marking requirement. Some foreign SS109 may or may not paint the tip. The picture in picture macro used was a Ruag M855 IIRC. If you're referring to the Army's new "green" tip aka M855A1 not likely. Maybe at some SBR velocities, but it would have to be tested.

    How does the Prime Lvl 3 UHMWPE compare to AR500's? AR500's variant shows weighing in at 3.3 lbs, where as Prime's is 4.2 lbs.

  • @BuffRANGE

    @BuffRANGE

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's a very good question. Over the years AR500 Armor has private labeled a few other company's plates to include TenCate, RMA, and Hesco. I believe Their current iteration is in-house made. If they don't own presses, the material won't be bonded as well. The reason for Prime's weighing 4.2lbs is because it's 1.3" thick, so it has way more material. AR500's likely wouldn't stop M855 at all, but of course I can't claim that 100% without them or me testing it. If I get caught up with plate testing, I may see if they'd want a demo.

  • @Mat-pw7ox

    @Mat-pw7ox

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@BuffRANGE I actually have a set of AR500's, also at 1.3" thick exactly - it's just the full pound variation that has me asking the question. Doesn't look like AR500 has rated it to stop M855, and only mention M193 at 3150 fps. The weight offset makes me think AR500 might not have had the bonding ability to pack those layers like Prime was able to, and thus be lower density and capability.

    @@BuffRANGE No Matt, thank you! You are more than welcome and I look forward to seeing the testing! That is some Thick Armor and I wonder what the level IV would stop?! The stopping of the .338 Lapua blew me away on a LVL III armor! Under the RFII standards? Wow! That said, I saw you'd bought a new Stag, me too! I went with the "Tactical" version and have "tweaked her up" with a few things and only need to put in a new trigger... waiting for her! Heading over to "the Gunnies," now (really)! Yep, you're getting another vote from me! Then, I need to get off the PC, this blown right shoulder=hard typing... Have a great one!

    Who said it was AP? M855’s hardened steel tip is a KNOWN issue for UHMWPE panels. Different plate constructions have weaknesses. Steel plates for example can stop m855 but not m193 over 3100 fps.

    7.62x39 variants are In the RHB range like seen here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e35rzsGGh924eZs.html M855’s tip in many samples is 49-52 RHC. Regardless UHMWPE plates are all weak to M855 and generally will not stop m855. I’ve tested this true on many UHMWPE plates.

    @@adamdyment9732 problem with team Wendy and opscore is you can't find anyone reviewing their helmets. Because they cost so much. Everyone claims they're great though and idk I've heard opscore is super light but has pretty bad defamation as well. If you go on HHV's website they share the defamation between opscore, team Wendy and a few other top brands and opscore had worse numbers than hhv(granted that can be biased). All the videos I've watched of people shooting hhv's the defamation wasn't bad. The worst was a guy shot the helmet with it on a ballistic dummy lab head with 12ga buck and it stopped it but the defamation crushed the skull so essentially would kill you. All the other rounds like 10mm, 9mm and .45acp had minimal defamation.
