I love how Cat's reaction to the unreality bubble where he doesn't exist is so cat-like. When you're paying attention to him, you're beneath his notice, but the minute you begin ignoring him he make sure you know he's there

The Rimmer ageing thing is probably related to his programming to keep Lister alive (or sane). When he's around Lister he ages as normal (hence his appearance in BtE, X, XI, and XII) but when he's not around Lister he stays the same age (such as Rimmerworld). He dosn't need to age so his program dosn't unless it's overwritten by the function Holly brought him back with. That's what I've always assumed anyway.

In 1993, it was a very captivating episode. Holds up well. Drives me nuts that they had no proper resolution, though the most obvious one is - theoretical spoiler alert - they were in another unreality bubble.

One thing that always bugged me about the time drive is that there's lots of ways they could have used it to get back Red Dwarf and then back to Earth (ignoring the series 7 time drive's capability). Just travel a few months back in time, intercept the stolen Red Dwarf (the thing about it not being stolen wasn't written in yet) when it passed through that region of space (as they were following it all series), then travel six million years into the past, get into the stasis booths for 3 million years and arrive at Earth almost exactly when they left in the first place. Easy. Entire show concluded there and then. No need for a faster than light drive if they have access to stasis pods and time travel.

I still remember watching this episode when I was really young. Seeing the characters die and the ship blow up followed by credits was just mindblowing to me! And then to have to wait THREE YEARS for the next series was agony. I remember I was so excited for the S7 premier but something caused me to miss it and I was in tears. Granted, I was 9 and we didn't have a vhs recorder.

The "whole crew getting killed episode" is a pretty common trope for a series end in British Sci-Fi. It's happened several times in Dr Who, at least twice in Blake's 7 and those are just the ones I can think of right off the top of my head.

Series 6 was the first season of Red Dwarf I watched as it was coming out. It was at the time I was learning to swim and after swimming lessons, we'd go home, my Mum would make hot chocolate and we'd watch Red Dwarf. A shocking ending too with such a cliffhanger and it took over 3 years for the next series to come out.

  • @optimisticwhovian1726

The shame about Doug Naylor was he wrote these great cliffhangers then did total cop outs the next episode just like the opening crawl that starts series 3 which looks like a bloody rushed job cos they couldn't be bothered with proper episodes to lead on from the end of series 2. And then again series 8 ends on a dramatic cliffhanger only to be completely forgotten about in series 9 and glibly referenced just to tease people in season 11. Good acting by Chris Barrie though his career was always in comedy but when called upon to do some serious dramatic acting he gave the end weight and left everyone in suspense even if it was all for nought in Tikka to Ride. it's the most memorable cliffhanger of the entire canon.

At first, I wondered if maybe the end scene was an homage to the end of the novel "The Last Human" as far as Rimmer goes, but then I found out that the book came out two years after the episode, so...maybe it's the other way around.

First episode I saw was Legion. So I didn't really get that Rimmer had been a hologram before or had died or anything. With the H and all the badge like things I thought he was their commander. I mean I guess he's the de facto leader but I thought in more of an official, Jim Kirk, kind of way. Either way I fell in love with the show, Rimmer and Barrie all in the same episode so I was good and hooked for the rest.

Mr Critical hitler wasn’t really a vegetarian in the way people think of it. He had crippling stomach pains and his doctor advised him to cut down on meat because the high protein activated it. He did and felt somewhat better, so he soon cut it out altogether and his stomach pains were no more. He didn’t stop eating meat for ethical reasons.

Despite the behind the scenes trouble for this episode, to me this is the dramatic peak of the series. I don’t know if it’s cause I saw it as a kid on its first airing, or if it’s because I lost a parent the same year, but the scene of them all dying really has stuck with me. And when Rimmer picks up the bazookoid and runs off after realising what he has to do, it still gets a bit dusty around my eyes even to this day 😢

Either one just writing on their own wouldn't make it feel the same. But it's not fair just to label Naylor the reason for the perceived drop in quality

I did like this episode, but I must comment on a few things. First of all, I have been known to write some Fan Fiction shows, and year after year, I get in my mind about a Red Dwarf Christmas Carol, with Rimmer as Scrooge, and it brings back a lot of the old one-time characters from Seasons 1 - 4, including Rimmer's Mother and young Rimmer. Until I saw Season 7, Out of Time, I thought, would be the end of Red Dwarf. At the end, I was not sure which Starbug was destroyed, the present one or the future one. My favourite part was when Rimmer looked through the scope and his reaction to Lister being a brain in a jar. That was funny. The idea of unreality pockets and time drives were a great idea. I wish, though, that they had done the morale meeting a little earlier in the show, then we could have heard some of the other characters' opinions of the others. Good episode.

Red Dwarf was a great show. The Americans wanted to make a movie as long as no original cast weren't in it. I think Tom Cruise was going to be Lister. Lucky for us they didn't do it. I saw the American version of red dwarf pilot, and that was a taste of what's to come. Which didn't.! English humor it best done with understated humor, by the English. Maybe they don't have the big budget flash effects, but Red Dwarf was done on a shoe string. Its the story and actors that make something worth watching. TY for sharing, I have been enjoying your commentary

Rather than fight or give up the data, they could've used the time drive once and just gone backwards a few hundred years. If the future Star Bugs time drive can't go back in time then going back in time a few hundred years would put them well out of range. Then they could back track Red Dwarf to their last know position, head there, and catch it unawares or grab it before it's even stolen. When that's done and they're back on the Dwarf, destroy the time drive so their future selves are erased and therefore no danger of them coming back. In that respect, wouldn't it have been funny if it turned out all this time that Red Dwarf was never really stolen, the crew had just spent 200 years following future versions of themselves who'd made it back to, and 'recovered' Red Dwarf. :P I know that messes with how the story unfolded, but then even the writers didn't know how the Dwarf chase would turn out. But considering how many re-writes of the season final they made it makes me wonder if this was not their original scenario for season 06, but decided to go another route.

Great review, and an awesome final episode! I think the difference in appearance is likely your second idea of "Ugliness on the inside changes the outside." , but I think there may be a possibility of it being a result of their extreme decadence, having no real exercise and eating all the foods they want, including the kind bad for them, just deteriorated their health badly. Your second idea makes more sense though to me.

Yeah, 7 and 8 were pretty dire, (8 especially) and 'Back to Earth', whilst it had its moments, couldn't seem to decide if it wanted to be a pilot or a farewell and was a tonal mess as a result. The show, themes and characters seemed to come off the rails totally when Grant left and threw S7 in to development hell. That combined with Craig Charles' personal controversies as well as some fatigue for the cast harmed the show and Red Dwarf took a long time to recover thereafter. There's a reason S7 and S8 were all but removed from canon by the recent, (and largely better) seasons. (Though I will say S11 was uneven.) With that said I suspect my feelings about S7, at least, were slightly exaggerated by certain factors. As a small child, when I saw this season finale, I was *gripped* and felt so betrayed when the follow-up finally came *three years later* and it barely gave the previous events more than a brief, tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement. Still, the show undeniably lost some gravitas when it lost Grant.
