First off I wanna say Dena, I love these. I rewatch these vlogs every so often. My main reason for commenting is to make a case for Rimmers character development. From season one and into this episode there’s been very subtle hints of his character development. I talked about this to another person but I don’t think he would’ve learned the Space Corp Directive without Kryten harping on him. While he does enjoy rules and regulations thanks to this he was actually closer to being an officer than ever before. Heck in season six’s finale he picked up a Bazookoid and fired it. He wouldn’t have done that in the earlier seasons. Even if it doesn’t benefit him he still tries to help out every once in a while. It’s rather clear that this Rimmer was slowly becoming a better person. I know people like to harp on the later seasons for him going back to the way he was but even then he’s jumped over major hurdles that early Rimmer wouldn’t even attempt. Rimmer is my favorite.

I think maybe it's how I got introduced to RD, but Series 7 is one of my favorites. I came into the fandom in 1996, just when the 7th series was starting to air on PBS in the states, and watched it and series 1 before getting the books. The more dramatic, SF tone of the books, the sense of loneliness in space, of fighting off despair and depression of being the last human portrayed in series 1 and 2 (and 7) is still my favorite aspect of the show. I think series 7 showed that you could play the premise straight, instead of just for gags, and it still works. And for me, it did.

It was a combination, but at the time, he quoted Brittas Empire as the reason since Gordon Brittas was a very similar character to Rimmer and he didn't have the time or energy to do both series. So if you have to pick between two shows doing well where one is an ensemble piece and one where you're the lead, especially when the former had a four-year hiatus and doing a major stylistic reboot it was uncertain fans would come back for or get behind...I guess it's an easy choice.

@@Cyborcat fortunately, this show has never taken itself too seriously and has a healthy level of disrespect for continuity and "canon" and it's always been that way, so, given the other inconsistencies it's asked us to accept along the way, it's not too much of an ask on it's part that we accept somehow, someway, all previous versions of Rimmer, living and dead, have had their experiences safely uploaded to the hologram archive database and that said database has somehow survived all previous instances of Red Dwarf and/or Starbug disappearing, blowing up, having it's crew wiped out, etc. such that the current BTE-and-beyond Hologram Rimmer is comprehensively updated, patched, merged, etc. with all previous versions and he is functionally the same entity we've been watching Lister bear with since S1E1. how? who knows, we've never known. they've never explained how the recording/saving/updating process for hologram personality disks works. If it puts your mind at ease about Rimmer’s fate, there was a deleted scene in which the new Ace Rimmer reveals his origins to Lister. In his dimension the divergent point was fairly recent, from Lister's viewpoint. He stole the Time Drive on the Gemini 12 and left his crew for dead. He wound up in Napoleonic times, hiding as a woman in a dress and working in a florists to avoid conscription. The prior Ace approached him to pass on the flame. He uses it as an example of how they "all start out as caterpillars and end up butterflies". So it’s plausible this Rimmer became as awesome as his predecessors.

This is one of those episodes, like the heart warming ones from Futurama. It's silly, but it hits you with emotions unexpectedly. When they gave "Rimmer" a hero's burial in space, then when they saw all of the other Aces who have died, that is when the emotions kick in. But because it is Red Dwarf, there has to be the funny bit with the ejector seat to bring it back to the absurd. Great comedy show! The show Barney Miller was a well written show too. It had real emotional weight to their episodes mixed with unexpected comedy.

Considering how Rimmer remembers stuff from the first seasons, I think the Rimmer we get from season 9 onwards is Holo-Rimmer and not Nano-Rimmer. Maybe he came back to help at the end of season 8 and gave up being Ace, or made the Nano-Rimmer the new Ace.

My theory is still that Rimmer died in Season 8 and was brought back as a hologram again with the memories of both versions. It'd be pretty lame if he just stopped being Ace after all the build-up in this episode.

I understand your point of view, but on the other hand, Nano-Rimmer didn't have the same bond Holo-Rimmer did with the others through years of adventures. I kinda wish he was the Holo-Rimmer who came back. Kryten does mention in XI and XII that Rimmer died twice, which could either be the first time he died and when he died again on "Timeslides" or when he died on "Only the Good". I wonder if the creators will ever explain it. On the other hand there was an interview were they explained that Rimmer ages in the latter season but not when he was in Rimmerworld because since he was created to keep Lister sane, it would be very depressing for Lister if he never aged, so he's aging at the same rate Lister does.

@@sofiamatos8297 I would like to believe it is "Composite Rimmer." When this Rimmer died (Nano) The ship would store his data on top of "Holo Rimmer" Fusing the two files into one. Composite Rimmer would have "Memories" of Ace but would view it all as some sort of dream or fantasy. He would have the potential to become ace but not the will. Just a idea.

I had a few problems with this, aside from the fact that it took Rimmer off the show. The biggest problem I had is that it isn't revealed until about halfway through that Ace Rimmer is not the same Ace they met before and that he is a hard-light hologram. Yet earlier, the other three ask him how he has been doing and he explains it to them, and doesn't seem to drop any hints. Secondly, only Lister knew about this, and Kryten and Cat didn't. I did, however, like how they sent him off, because for all intents and purposes, even though they had their differences, Rimmer can be considered a good friend of theirs. Everyone has their own personalities. Another big problem I had with this is through most of the series, Rimmer wanted to make more of himself. Even in Dimension Jump, when he first meets Ace, he says that Ace is living proof of what he could have accomplished. I would think that if Ace wanted Rimmer to take over for him, Rimmer would be overjoyed for the simple fact that this would be his only chance of making a name for himself and feeling that his parents would be proud of him, instead of Rimmer acting like a complete git and somewhat of a sooky baby. Also, it isn't stated in your review that when Rimmer was fighting the knight, he was holding the sword backwards. Also, when Lister told Cat and Kryten that the knight escaped from the AR machine, nobody asks him how the knight was able to do that. I have to state that even though it is a good "send-off" episode for Rimmer, I really give a marginal non-recommendation to it based on the above-mentioned problems.

So I’ve just thought of a pretty big plot hole. Ace is supposed to be a hard light hologram, which were established in Legion to be invulnerable but a gun bullet is able to penetrate it and hit his light Bee but again in Legion, only Rimmer himself was able to get to the Bee.

  • @curseofgladstone4981

I think the holograms themselves are mostly invulnerable but force can be transfered through them and that can damage the core. I think in another episode he jumps on a grenade and they are concerned that it could have damaged his light bee.

The nanobotically resurrected Rimmer or this one, I still wonder which Rimmer we’re watching now... I REALLY hope we find out in series twelve, probably the last episode, Skipper. Although it has been confirmed that the name Skipper hasn’t got anything to do with Lister’s nickname but I’m still hopeful. I honestly hope that it is the original, I mean he does have the memories but there’s not explanation, so far, explaining when/how he got back...

My theory is just that S8 Rimmer died and was brought back as a hologram who was given the memories of the earlier hologram Rimmer up to the point before he left. They made such a big production out of his becoming Ace that it'd be pretty lame if he just went back to being Rimmer after that.

Rimmer's character development is always edging slightly more towards outright heroism, so this was a fitting and pretty touching send off for him. A few things about it bothered me, though. Mainly the idea that all Rimmers are destined to become Ace. It's pretty much the opposite of Dimension Jump, where small changes in personal experience can make huge, irreconcilable differences to how you turn out. I don't know, maybe I just don't like where characters are pushed to do things against their nature with "You have to do this... because DESTINY". It also seemed really out of character for Lister to lie about Rimmer's death. Even if Kryten and Cat would theoretically be more saddened by Ace's death than Rimmer's, it's grossly manipulative and unethical to lie about this, especially when he does it for literally no reason. As far as I know they never found out the truth. Bizarre. (Though it's heavily implied the new series Rimmer is the original, so maybe they had that extremely scarring and difficult conversation off-screen?) But wait, can holograms even properly die? Just restore them onto a new light bee from a backup! ... there are still backups, right? I get the impression the whole "Red Dwarf can sustain just one hologram at a time, from a library of former crewmembers" thing is a detail the show wants us to forget about in the Starbug era. XD
