    Yah, it's so distracting, it ALMOST ruins the scene, but instead it just kind of adds to the funny. It also makes you realize that it really is a live audience and not an added laugh track.

    +Cyborcat there's a laugh in series 8 which I found a bit noticeable too. It was Back in the Red part II when Kryten's head falls off during his medical. Actually I recall during the Tongue Tied sequence hearing this cackle too. Funny I've seen this show so many times I can identify some of the specific laughs in some episodes...

    Thinking about it it is possible to explain the Kochanski retcon in universe: When Lister and Rimmer changed timeline in Timeslides, more than just Rimmer being alive got changed. In the new timeline, things were almost the same, but now, Lister used to have a relationship with Kochanski - and because he doesn't remember the original timeline, he doesn't know any different. This would also explain why he didn't go back in time 5 years later to marry her as stated in Stasis Leak.

    The whole "dick pic" scene had me HOWLING as a kid, punching the couch especially at the "Taking photos and showing it to your mates" and "No appliance should ever give someone a double Polaroid!" lines. Also...I think the "How can the same smeg happen to the same guy twice?" is a DIRECT reference to Die Hard 2? DH2 was 1990, this was about the same time?

    Exactly. It's a pity that so many people consider that to be some kind of massive continuity error when there's a such a simple and logical explanation. Too many people are too quick to dismiss things like that with "it's just a comedy/TV series etc." I hate that mentality.

    +OxBigly2010 yeah I like to connect all continuity errors back to either Timeslides or the addition of KRYTEN, for example if Rimmer died later in his life it would make sense he would be a bit more updated as technology would have advanced by that point and with JMC finally sending them new stuff it would make sense light bee technology would come at some point and Rimmer not needing the Holocage in episodes like Backwards I link to KRYTEN projecting Rimmer when they are off Red Dwarf or Starbug/blue/white midget

    I think the best shows do what this episode does perfectly; outlines a dichotomy and presents both sides without really telling you what to believe. Babylon 5 was great for that too. Also LOL I must've seen this episode 100 times and I never realised the shrinking bazookoid doesn't make sense! I also never considered the allegory for the class system because tbh it hasn't really gone away it's just fragmented and expanded. There's a greater difference between the wealthiest and the poorest, but now all of the non-elite classes have formed into a kinda smooth gradient. People who would have been lower-upper class often end up working closely with the working class, but there's no friction like there would have been in the past because most of us recognise that we're all in the same boat and none of us can compete with the ultra-wealthy elite.

    I've seen these Red Dwarf episodes, I don't know how many times, and they never get old. Every show cracks me up. DNA's double Polaroid line makes me laugh so hard and especially that I now found out that they used a real picture of a penis as a practical joke on Craig Charles, LOL !

    Lister has the confederate flag on his jacket, as it was seen as a flag of rebelion in the UK in the 70's and 80's (The Dukes of Hazzard was also a massive hit in the UK). It's only been the last 15 or so years that understanding of what it actually stands for has become more well known.

    Love your reviews. It's helping to get me into Red Dwarf again, and it's very entertaining. Always strange to hear Americans talk about British social classes like they are some kind of weird thing that only we have. You have essentially the same social classes, only with other names. Craig Charles is working class bordering on chav/council estate. You certainly have a huge working class even though most like to pretend they are middle class. Council Estate stereotypes in the UK would be very similar to what you might call Trailer Trash/Trailer Park/Low income etc. Then you have the Middle Class and you certainly have an Upper Class, that although not descended from aristocrats, certainly pass on their wealth, and are considered "Old Money". Can't understand how most Americans can't see it.

  • @Cyborcat

    @Cyborcat

    I actually said something similar when I covered Red Dwarf USA. BTW, in my experience, it's Brits who are always telling Americans we don't understand the class system.

  • @phily8093

    @phily8093

    @@Cyborcat Speaking as a Brit, I don't doubt my fellow countrymen could have said such things. We can be patronising, obfuscating arseholes, in the same way Americans can be overtly patriotic, confusing, ass holes. But basically we are all the same, and have the same hierarchy. The super-rich, the self made, the pompous old money types, the middle classes that feel both superior and inferior at the same time, the working classes who work hard but don't often get a fair deal, and the "underclass", who are either marginalised because they don't want to work or marginalised because they can't work. While there are subtle differences to every system, it's the same the world over. The strange thing to me is that Americans are equally obsessed with their social status, but they like to imagine that they don't have a class system, and that "all Men are created equal", which is clearly not the case, as much as I wish it was. Anyway, sorry for the yammering, I'm obviously bored because of lockdown. Wishing you well. Keep up the good work, and I hope you and your family and community are staying safe and healthy.

    The British class system is something quite fascinating. Society is split into groups with them typically sticking with their own kind. Some attempt to ride higher, but it's a really difficult path. WELL, I mostly know about this from watching a British show called "Keeping Up Appearances", and I remember a local Polish TV magazine feeling the need to explain to the readers how Poland doesn't have anything like a "middle upper class" equivalent, and as such it may feel hard to get what all of these class struggles are about. OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT!

    @@Cyborcat Absolutely, I know it was your humour and he can get a bit shrill. 😅 Sorry, I wasn't criticising, just saying. Craig Charles does a lot of DJ'ing on the radio now (he's fantastic and very knowledgeable), and his accent has got a lot softer (although, you can still tell he's a scouser), and his voice is deeper. He sounds and looks so young in the early RD years. Love your vids, BTW. I just found them a couple of weeks ago. RD was a favourite of mine when I was young. A lot of comedy doesn't age well, RD has aged very well and is still hilarious. I think it's the best British comedy I've ever seen. (If you discount series 7-9, sadly).

    I love Red Dwarft and love these Vlogs. A minor nit-pick of my own on this one. For me as a Brit, Lister's normal voice isn't funny, it's a normal Brummie (Birmingham) accent. Oh, and if anything is a comment on social classes in Britain it's the relationship between Lister (working class) and Rimmer (middle class). Although maybe this episode could be seen as a comment on British attitudes about people who try to "better themselves".

    Funny you mention that. Apparently when they started writing this show they asked Craig Charles if he felt Lister was a racist caricature, and I think he was okay with it. But you could see Rimmer as a racist character too: the uptight white guy with more teeth than brain cells who is only in command because he happens to be above the other guy, not for any kind of merit.

    I hate this bloody episode. It's basically an argument against transgenderism, transhumanism, and self-determination. Lister never really addresses who or what it is that gets to decide what you are. If he did maybe his argument would be more understandable. If he were merely saying "To thine own self be true" then why didn't he say that? It's much easier to interpret it as a very conservative argument against free will and deciding your own destiny. Kryten becoming human wouldn't have had to go horribly wrong. Maybe it could have created something new and unique. Maybe the wanting to be something greater than yourself is the beginning of true greatness. Maybe it could be worth a god damn.
