It's a bit of a tradition in the UK. One of the statues in Glasgow, Scotland has a traffic cone on it's head, that a bunch of Neds/Chavs thought would be funny and the city council is cool with it, so they left it on statue and became a icon of the city.

The traffic cone thing is... Well over here in the UK it always seems that, after a /very/ heavy night out.... For some reason you always end up stealing a traffic cone and bringing it back. And yes, I am talking 100% from personal experience here; having done it several times in the past. I've got quite a collection.

I remember a college party at The Torrens pub, one drunk guy nicked the wet floor cone (like a traffic cone, except is yellow and says wet floor) from the toilets, went outside and decided to blow a raspberry through it, turning the thing into a DIY megaphone. Result was a dog getting scared senseless, a cat running up a tree and my friend getting an earful from an irate landlord.

This is one of my favorite eps. It’s kind of similar thematically to terminator 2 where the older model robot ultimately wins. There’s something emotionally satisfying about the redemption of obsolete technology. I don’t feel the same way about older people so I fail to understand why this theme appeals to me. I used to watch KZread videos about abandoned trucks running again.

The Marilyn Monrobot is Grant and Naylor predicting Wish.com. I actually think this episode asks a pretty interesting sci-fi question. So much of our consumer lifestyle is based on the idea of planned obsolescence, what happens when we have actual sentient AI? Will it still be practical in a world where people develop actual emotional attachment to their electronics? What are the human rights implications? One of the things I love about RD is the way it's funny and silly but sometimes it hits on something much deeper without you even noticing. REQUISITE TRAFFIC CONE STORY: One time my flatmate brought a whole load of traffic cones home, purely because he'd seen this episode and felt he had to pay tribute.

I loved it a lot, too. But I thought Rimmer's French Kissing story was hilarious, especially when he talks about how his cousins seemed to be falling for him. Could that be why Rimmer's family is like it is? Could his family have married their cousins? This is a great comradery episode. It looks like from here on in, the comradery is more poignant and friendlier. This one really makes a person feel good.

Fun fact. The misprint in the Bible has a basis in reality, though not "hope"/"hop" mistake. It's called the Wicked Bible or the Sinner's Bible published in the 1600s. It contains several misprints, with the most famous being the exclusion of the word NOT in one of the 10 commandments making "Thou shalt not commit adultery," into "Thou shalt commit adultery." Also in Deuteronomy the word "greatness" is printed as "great-asse" so it reads "Behold, the Lord our God hath shewed us his glory and his great-asse".

Got a bit of a sad one a few years ago in Dunedin NZ I was working for ministry of works around university area. One particular student loved to make off with traffic cones, control signs you name it. The guy I was working under realising how many he had, knocked politly on the flat and asked him to please put the signs and cones at the gate and nothing would come of it. The guy was really nasty. Really nasty. Next day tapped at the door again and got very rude response so my boss called the police. Guy changed tune very rapidly but my boss refused to drop the charges and the guy was doing a law degree. He got thrown out of law school because of criminal charges. Felt badly for the student but if the roading guys ask nicely for Thier traffic cones you might want to give it back

The traffic cone thing is just the sort of thing young lads might do on the way home from the pub. Graffiti and minor vandalism seem to be part of drinking culture for young men. (normally miner and mostly comical) like adding the letter I to a "To Let" sign Stealing a small tree in a plant pot and trying to take it on a buss with your two mates just so when the buss driver askes you can say "Just the Tree of us". Finding a small car and turning it around (by picking it up) or hiding your mates motorbike. Turning road signs around or connecting the gaps in the 30 sign to make it say 80. I've still got a "danger of death" sign with a man getting electrocuted, i have no idea where from or how much danger i was in trying to get it. (it must be 25 years old ish now)

the episode was acted out with Chris Barrie doing the voices and storyboards. this was on the dvds and blu-rays but you can find it on youtube sometimes. the episode Dad was meant as the series three opening episode. it would be the first appearance of the rebuilt kryten and why holly is now female and the events of the episode are told in the scrawling text that appears before the episode Backwards. There is a joke in the episode that predicted the plot of a famous movie and its star five years before the film came out.

On reflection I've come to realise The Last Day acts as a companion piece to Timewave. While LD is about religion acting as a balm for the ego against societal demands, Timewave is about abandoning all codes of self-discipline for the sake of protecting the ego. LD's satire of religiosity is something most people are comfortable with, whereas the idea that rejecting personal responsibility can be forced on you in a way that is destructive makes some viewers very uncomfortable.
