Who assassinated JFK? Well ... it's complicated. And involves curry.

    It totally changes the meaning of the episode. Btw I love your reviews of Red Dwarf. I was born in 1991 and my parents were pretty liberal with what we watched. I'm so glad we taped these because they spawned my love of sci-fi way more than star wars ever could. Great reviews 👍

    I always loved the amount of detail in the grassy knoll scene, the coca cola bottle (which they found to have been recently discarded with no-one there anymore), there were also witness accounts of a policeman seen on the grassy knoll, and bullet forensics showed it to be fired from an M16 assault rifle, standard issue for military/police/government officers which sparked more suspicion of an inside job.

    For the "move in time and space" thing, I always assumed that the future versions of themselves found away to modify it to move in space as well as time. When the timelines reset the modified version of the time drive ended up on the derelict, in an anomaly rather like the increased space in Starbug.

    The extra scenes are from the DVD/Bluray release and weren't broadcast originally, for those wondering. The original ending involved everyone beating up Lister in Dallas after his "I forgot to ask him if there's any curry houses in Dallas!" line. There were a few other scenes here and there as well. It pretty much boils down to they couldn't fit it all in, and there's a few episodes like that on the home releases. So if you're like me and got "bootleg" recordings of the show because Red Dwarf lost its US distributor for several years when this series came out or if you only watched the broadcast versions, you might be confused as well. The lines on Kryten's face may be a result of the filming process. Around this time, the BBC loved to shoot everything on HD video (which was brand new then) and apply filters to make it look like it was shot on film. This meant that all the production processes had to change because of the affect the filters had on color and lighting. If you want to see the difference, check out the BBC series for Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere as they shot and lit the series for that process, but ended up not doing it. It's why everything in that series looks so "odd". Oh, and there were four people who absolutely hated not filming in front of a live audience: Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules, and Robert Llewellyn. So much so that they only agreed to come back for Series VIII if they could shoot mostly in front of a live audience because they said it led to a different energy and messed with the comedic timing of their performances to not have the audience there.

    The version of this that I grew up with, had a laughter track, never mentioned the dead guy (Eric’s) name, the scene with the “chicken” was much shorter and the episode ended with everyone beating up Lister. Odd, but nice to see an alternative cut :)

    It's nice to finally know the reasoning behind the lack of a laugh-track for some of these episodes. Personally, I think there's something just a bit off about them, though. This was a show designed to include a laugh track, with performers who are used to that kind of comic timing. Compare to other sitcoms with no laugh track such as "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," or "Arrested Development." Their timing tends to be much snappier, so we much more readily accept the lack of a laugh track. But here, when you take it away, it seems like there's just an awkward pause where the laughter is supposed to go and it doesn't feel natural.

    "Can we get outta here please? I badly need to floss a piece of roasted dead person out of my teeth." That, and lister getting stomped behind the fence by his mates is one of the funniest comedy moments ever broadcast on British TV, Kryten's enthusiastic and ruthless use of a truncheon during a gang beating of his best friend was disturbingly hilarious.

  • @franl155
    @franl1552 жыл бұрын

    The episode contradicts itself: by killing their past selves, the older crew die because they're no longer able to grow into that crew, so the original crew come back to life because they couldn't have been killed by their older selves. Kennedy assassinates his younger self, by which he also ceases to exist as he won't grow into that older self who comes back to assassinate his younger self, who should therefore still be alive, except that he isn't. The DVD narration says that they contacted the Dallas TV station before this episode aired, to give them a heads-up about the plot: apparently the only complaint that came in from the Dallas audience related o the cannibalism scene.

    I think the change in tone and execution here is quite something, and the parts with JFK at the end elevate it to feeling like Quantum Leap. Red Dwarf was always amazing, but as mainly a sitcom with some bits of drama, here it turned into something else. This was very deliberate, by Doug, as he wanted to do Red Dwarf: The Movie, and used Series 7 as a way into that, by acclimatising fans to a more cinematic feel, inc more drama, no laugh track, and the use of a Filmisation filter over the video footage. Funnily enough, I think it makes it feel like what would have occurred if NBC had just funded Series 6 onwards, instead of doing a remake. As it happened, the fans didn't react well to these changes, complaining about the change in look, and lack of a laugh track, and normal service was resumed from Series 8. Sadly, Red Dwarf: The Movie didn't happen, although not because of a lack of trying. Doug has written scripts for it, but couldn't raise the finance as companies never though the scripts were good enough. The attempts at a significant budget also seemed hindered by concern over the brand being not well known enough in certain countries, along with the actors.

    Whenever Red Dwarf features time travel, they pretty much have to put in an explanation of why they don't use it to return home to Earth of 3 million years ago. Stasis Leak, Timeslides, Out of Time and some later episodes did this pretty well, and Tikka to Ride ... didn't. Pretty great episode otherwise though. Almost definitely the best episode in the incredibly divisive Series 7, even if I do have an unreasonably soft spot for "Blue". :P

    1:21 Yeah, though the style of American Lister's message with him sitting in a chair and with video borders also inspired Red Dwarf Smeg Ups VHS tapes. These came out during the 4 year hiatus between Series 6 and 7 and were presented by Robert Llewellyn in character as Kryten.

    You know, I just realised that this episode is basically Red Dwarf's take on City Of The Edge of Forever, from the original Star Trek. They futz with the past, destroy the future so bad that their ship doesn't even exist anymore, and have to go back and fix it by causing the death of a basically good person. I mean there's less romance and more fart jokes and cannibalism, but it's still basically the same story.

    I've been binge-watching your RD vids, you have a great voice and your comments are charming. Now!, Red dwarf NEEDS a studio audience.. The sets work FOR the comedy, you don't neuter comedy for sets..., Also I feel you're biased against Kryten, he's my favourite, the servile leader with a Jesus-like humility and faith in humanity. And sometimes, he's joint funniest with Rimmer, he's got so much more depth than a Data or a c3po. I shall continue to binge..

Its pretty crazy this season happened with a co-creator leaving, Chris Barrie leaving, getting rid of the audience and changing the show making it more 'film' like. Considering all that, the season isn't all that bad. Love your red dwarf blogs, can't wait to see your thoughts on 10, 11 and 12 and back to earth special :)

However, the series was shown to Red Dwarf fans in a cinema screening, and the reaction was taped. The BBC decides which version, laugh track or no laugh track to release.

    I never liked the Extended version. The original version ends when they beat up Lister and it just had a better pace. The extended ending just drags it out a bit too much and over explains

    I'm honestly torn. On the one hand, this is my favorite take on the Kennedy Assassination ("It'll drive the conspiracy nuts crazy, but they'll never figure it out.") On the other... is it... right for a British Sci-fi comedy to poke fun at an American tragedy? Or am I just overthinking things?

  • @Cyborcat

    For what it's worth--and take this with a grain of salt, because I haven't seen the episode in awhile so I could be remembering wrong--I don't think any of the humor is really at JFK's expense, it's all about the situation surrounding him. If anything, they portray him in a pretty sympathetic light.

    I think one reason why I like your series is that continuity errors that would, in most reviews of nerd media, be cause for a five-minute rant get pointed out and dismissed with an "oh well." Ah, perspective and sanity - entirely too rare things to find on the Internet. ;)

  • @Cyborcat

    @Cyborcat

    Part of it is because it's a comedy and I feel like that's the main focus of the show. There are some continuity errors that bug me, but yah ... I still generally just try to accept them and move on.

    Cyborcat I can overlook continuity errors if the episode is still funny. It’d probably explain why I’m enjoying the Dave episodes but 3 episodes into Series 7 is either a slog or annoying (Kryten...)

    I'm surprised you didn't mention one of the reasons behind the tone of the show changing to comedy-drama being due to one of the head writers leaving (or maybe you did in the last episode, sorry). Red Dwarf never really got the sitcom feel back until series X. I think the last two series are doing a good job of balancing the tone but Series 7 is definitely my least favourite, probably mostly for what happens next episode (even though I do love Clipper itself).

  • @davidjames579

    @davidjames579

    It was also because Doug wanted to do Red Dwarf: The Movie, and Series 7 was a lead-in to that with audiences, to get them used to it, in having more drama, no laugh track, and also using a Filmization filter on the video footage to make it look more cinematic. There were complaints from fans about the change in look, so the filter was removed from later screenings, and never used on other series.

    Thinking of Red Dwarf USA: what are the stereotypical takeaway habits of Americans? Like Indian takeaway is a big thing here, so I can't imagine what an American Lister would be obsessed with. Perhaps Chinese food?

    What saddens me about this series is that they didn't have a studio audience and used the excuse of "more elaborate sets". Come on! Red Dwarf wasn't *about* elaborate sets, it's about being funny. The series suffered and I think this was when Rob Grant left. Still funny from time to time, but overall, it just lost the funniness but gained better sets and effects. Sadly, this was the wrong way around.

    Meta-explanation: Character development as, by this point in the series, Cat's less of a "stray cat" and more of a "housecat". He's bonded with Lister and therefore doesn't see him as different anymore, the way cats will see their humans as just big cats. Most likely explanation: The joke worked better that way and, when it was being written, they still had an entire episode focused on Cat and his non-humanness.
