I'm an architecture student and I've been tasked with making a small retreat cabin that promotes self isolation during the pandemic. I think I found just the inspiration I needed after stumbling upon this series!

Stumbled on to your site by way of a KZread suggestion, so I am subscriber 740. I just watched episodes 3 and 4. I like what I see. I will go back and try to catch the first two. You seem to be doing a pretty good framing job, my guess is this is not your first rodeo, thank you for sharing this part of your life with us.

Right on!
if it were me i'd use 3/4 plywood to make the collars and only let them down as much as needed for you to have head room, leaving the center to have scissor trusses to facilitate the skylights and increase the vent and insulation space in the 'attic'.

Having a Great time with it. I apprestiate the kind words!
John Kidd you mentioned a fear that a small natural post would shrink because of being "green". It wouldn't shrink enough to really matter and length ways would be the only way that it would really have an effect as far structural. Trees don't shrink length ways when they season and dry. If that is the look you want, then you should just do it.

Thanks for that good to Know! Ill probably go a head and do it then.
For sure he needs windows up there be cause u hve a kid or kids n also for air to pass through

Another fun episode, thanks. Reckon you want to put in a window at the back of the loft so that it doesn't get too hot in the summer? Looking forward to the next vid!

Are you going to put a window in the roof? Giving some natural light on the top floor? Looking great.
@johnkidd2067

Yes the upstairs will have 3 windows and the roof will have 4 translucent panels. Thanks for watching!
Great video and channel! Keep up the good work! I would cut down that tree that’s so close to the house, it’s so crooked and small, just a thought?? Thx John 😎👍

@@johnkidd2067 13 years, wow lmao you just reminded me how old I'm getting!!! I remember when they first came out it was mind-blowing and a game changer for at height framing lol. I had to explain to my girlfriend how and why it was so helpful 😂. Keep this good content coming man. I'm loving it
I hope you are going to put in Fire stops between your studs to stop the walls acting like a chimney if a fire starts. You are doing a great job, I can't wait to see the next episode.

Looking good. Did you use some joist hangars for that loft? Couldn’t tell if you did? If not, I know that loft is pretty small but the shear strength of screws is not a lot. Keep those girls safe and throw on some joist hangars. God. Less and enjoy.

Wow, that is some bad auto correct. I guess I should check my message before sending... It was supposed to say “God bless and enjoy”. =)
Should have extended the loft joists into the studs with bearing cripple studs. Depending on the shear value to hold the loft up simply on nails is not a good thing. How are you going to extend your sheathing up to the plate now that you have the rafters installed? Hope you do not get any snow load as you have nothing to keep the outer walls from spreading. Should have had joist hangers for all the loft joists.

Well if i was to finish today you would be right. But i guess you have to keeping watching because i have all the those points addressed in the next episodes. Thank for watching
Hey John, I’m looking to build something very similar to this. Did you have a set of plans for your build?
@johnkidd2067

Troy sorry for the slow response. The plans for this are mostly in my head. But if you need dimensions I can provide them...
John, have you removed all timber you intend to? You have one tree that’s leaning very close .

Probably going to be for Family camp outs and extended stints. But you never know. Thanks for watching!
I once cut a Template for 123 Inches with a 10 Foot Tape Measure. That was back when Australia was converting from Imperial to Metric. The other guy cut his Template to exactly 10 Foot and 3 Inches (123 Inches). Unfortunately I cut Mine to 10 Foot and 3 Centimetres (I got Confused). Still used the Boards, alternated with the others, but told everyone that it was a Deliberate Design Feature

Balloon framing ended because of the fire hazard, fire spreading from the first to second floor unobstructed.
@johnkidd2067

Yes and amongst other things. Firestops are labor intesive. And smaller platform walls can be constructed on the floor easier. But for this application this system works for us. Thanks for watching. God bless!
👍🏻🇳🇱🌷
And cut that stupid tree beside the wall take care be safe
