I built a Cabin in 2020 - Start to Finish

2020 was a strange year. I built a cabin through it which helped me through it. I had no experience prior to this, I made some small mistakes, some big mistakes, and somehow got through it all in one piece.

The cedar shake siding alone is in the thousands. Trust fund build for sure
For me the ideas in this book kzread.infoUgkxT9ExVpR-3A-9rpRqx8vzXKZ3BMMTg_KH were a starting point for building three different sheds. Truini gives ideas that allow an individual to extrapolate into the design and building of his or her own shed. I especially enjoyed the treatment of building trusses and cedar dutch doors.
I just spent the last few days watching people build off grid cabins and it’s refreshing to see someone use proper building techniques and hardware. Good job man

Can't wait to start building my own home. Your videos are inspirational. To everyone else: just keep in mind, a foundation carrys loads and spreads out that load enough, so the ground underneath can hold your building completely stable. These piers are probably big enough for this site, but make sure you do a little homework for your site and soil/ground types and size your foundation to your calcs, and to the climate of your land like frost lines, water run off and drainage etc. Design your own foundation with all the considerations required for your site.
@rafemaxwell4143
Жыл бұрын
Not saying what he has here isn't adeqaute, but something to consider... Your foundation also holds your building to the ground and interacts with loads in every direction. A good way to think about your foundation is that it's only as strong as the amount of bar and mud that is in it, and your building is only as strong as your foundation. I poured a foundation for myself this year for a small building that has 18 YDS and and near a metric ton of bar in it. That'd be almost 1600 40LB bags of concrete. This is per nominal engineering specs. For would-be builders, start with a solid foundation.

Good thing I have KZread premium.. haven’t watched a commercial in over 4 years
I've been building professionally for 10+ years and am a licensed contractor. I'm impressed. Some of these DIY cabin builds turn out like hot garbage burritos designed by a three year old Chihuahua. This was not one of those. I could nitpick a few things here and there, but you did a lot of important things right (flashed the hell out of doors and windows, decent roof details, etc). You'll have this cabin for a long time. Oh and I definitely noticed your carpentry skills improving throughout the build. You looked a bit tentative with the skill saw at first, but by the end you looked like an old salt.

Hi, was great to watch this whole build from start to finish, great job. Genuine question as I have no building experience but would love to build a tiny house, what is the reason for building the frame for the walls and then cutting them to fit windows, can you build the frame with the windows already frame out? Also, how come you didn’t attach the frame to the concrete until much later in the build? Would love hear your answers as I’m genuinely interested 🏡
Dang, that's legit! A sliding glass door with a deck out back to grill out on would be the only change I would make. Amazing, quality work!!! So much attention to detail, and not cutting corners. 👍👍
Amazing work I love every details from the beginning to the end.❤

Nice video. I think it would be a great idea for you to add a "lessons learned" in regards to small and big errors and so on. I would have put flashing on the corners before the cedar went up. Also pre-paint most everything, then install. Even the plywood on the roof. Way easier. Fixed windows are fine if that's a design element you wish to have - I would have figured some opening or natural ventilation capability as well. Nice work.

Not to post to be a troll but to help, a few mistakes on this (but I guess we all make them). Mainly on water an thermal…. Probably if it’s not lived in every day then not the end of the world. They should do things like this in school. The whole class project for the year is to build a small house. Yano, actually learn something honest, practical and at the end you get a great sense of pride, satisfaction and independence when you look at something you actually helped build with your hands, your hard work and your determination. I realised that when I left school and University there wasn't much I could actually "do". I could sit an exam and ace it, but I couldn't really "do" anything. At least 50% of the time spent in school is a waste and could be put to better use. Instead we're content with churning out coddled minds that cant "do" anything.

You then missed your Major. I majored in Electrical Engineering and I love my job, I feel like the university has made me feel like a more complete person. I have a lot more confidence in my field of work, and I loved the every minute of it. I imagine if I had went for medicine I'd be the same way as you.

@@lazar2175 ha ha. You made me laugh. I expected you to send me off. You're OK ...for a moment I thought you were rubbing you Electrical Engineering degree off. Congrats on that and thanks, by the way!

His reaction to the things working is wholesome
This is amazing! I'd love to see how you decorated it inside
Looks great, quick tip, you can use a piece of strapping with fine finish nails to hold it in place if need a run to do shingles on - saves you setting up a line every run

Impressive and so refreshing to see someone saving money 💰 while building something of high quality! You’ve inspired me to save where I can on my upcoming build!
Congratulations on making your dream a reality! Like you, we've just finished building a cabin of our own. Mind you, we didn't build it ourselves. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching videos like this! Good job!!!!
i love it when modern style is mixed with rustic!
