PRINCE & VANITY & the LOVE RHOMBUS: The EDIT w/Deleted Scenes

#Prince4ever #RIPVanity #PurpleRain
Vanity was the Prince protégé that set the prototype and broke the mold. Denise Matthews (Vanity) was an exotic woman with exquisite beauty and ambition. Vanity like many of Prince
s future woman protege's had questionable talent as a singer.
But like most of the Prince gang, they were asked only to pose for the album covers and do the songs on tour. Prince was the architect of their backstory and the sound of their music.
Vanity was also in a relationship with Prince. Prince's relationship with Vanity, along with the dynamic of Prince's relationship with Morris Day, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Jellybean and Monte Moir all of the Band "The Time" while on the "Triple Threat tour" (1999 tour) was the the backdrop for the 1984 film "Purple Rain".
Unfortunately for Prince Vanity's ambition was huge and Prince's patience was tiny. Vanity was offered a small sum of money to be the female lead in the film (and the band Vanity 6). According to subsequent interviews, Vanity was broke.
While the bands were in rehearsal she left the set and broke off the relationship with Prince. Vanity also cited that Prince was "playing in several playpens". Prince, a young severely talented and possibly broken musician was on his ascent and was probably not amenable to compromise in any area of his life.
Vanity would leave the Minneapolis camp for Motown and her own star turn in Berry Gordy's the Last Dragon, which while dated and filled with racist tropes remains a cult classic.
Patty "Apollonia" Kotero was cast as the female lead and Purple Rain went on to outsized success.
Vanity and Prince were briefly united at the American Music Awards in 1985, when Prince would dominate the Grammy awards and win an Oscar for his soundtrack to Purple Rain. Vanity continued to make films and had a successful career marred by drug use and health concerns.
Ironically, Vanity arguably had a more successful film career than Prince.

Her song which was a chant and yell from her toes she did 3 to 4 times she was at my church. She stomped the ground and scream and yell like a rocker...but the beauty was indescribable. She would pound her fists and march across the stage yelling "he is under my feet"!! " he's under my feet" and she...from crescendos to a whispers.... "he's under my feet!! (Devil) then the would scream and marcb and stomp. He's under my FEET!!! AND she would have her personal praise...sing. Was the most beautiful experience ever! Her spirit was so beautiful. She asked that she had plenty of bottles water and a fruit basket. She was doing her peritoneal dialysis in her hotel room. She spoke about as she preached her early yrs of all the pastors she would party and drug with. Even as a minister. In her latter yrs, she totally repented and cleaned up. She almost had a sense she would not have long. Beautiful woman. She took Michaela my daughter...she was a newborn, in her arms and dance and sang. I jus CRIED!

It cleared up alot of stuff which makes alot of sense now. She could not have both a career and his love. So she choose her career. Even tho she's a gorgeous woman. Prince had eyes for other women. And Sheila E. the Glamorous Life was about the reason Vanity left him. Interesting. Its like I've always said. There was no women on this earth that could compete with Prince and his music. Prince's first and only true lastng love was his music. He never cheated on it. Never abandoned it. He never put it on a back burner. Vanity finally figured it out.

I'm so glad I came across this video. This is by far the most accurate portrayal of the dynamics between Prince and Vanity and how it all went down. Thank you. It's very personal for me as I was the "boy" she mentions at :41:10 that got carried off the dance floor by Chic, Prince's bodyguard at First Avenue nightclub. I never knew she publicly spoke of this night in an interview - so I was stunned when I saw this. I lived in Minneapolis back in the day and she and I first met at a dance bar in 1983, at the height of her Vanity 6 career, and we immediately became close friends. Prince never liked me or she and I being out in public together because in the pre-Purple Rain production days, he wanted the appearance they were still a couple for publicity reasons (also ego and control). He told me to stay away from her numerous times, which of course, we ignored. That infamous night, he saw us on the dance floor, had me picked up (literally) and carried upstairs to his private balcony where we had an "exchange." Which resulted in me being thrown out of the club on my ass (also literally). I still can picture her horrified expression at the door and being held there to witness. She and I rendezvoused later that night. This was the final straw of her being controlled. I was one of the lucky few, and there were very few, that remained close to her throughout her journey of self-discovery. She told me I was "the cutest guy in the world' the night we first met and often throughout our 30+ year friendship. She signed her autobiography, "Blame It on Vanity" to, "The Cutest Guy in the World. Love Denise to my Dear Friend. Lotta Love." It's one of my most cherished possessions. She truly is still the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, and her inner-beauty was beyond. She is greatly missed.

@@Dreamz19 Thank you for your comment. Since I discovered this video, I have received so many signs. Beautiful signs from Denise. As far as I know, Stuart (aka Adam Ant) and Denise dated before Prince and I always figured there was a special bond between them as she always spoke highly of him. I never knew he, or the others for that fact, also had any run ins with Prince and the team. I always found it ironic that he was threatened by me as she and I were friends, nothing more, and he knew this but it still didn't stop him from trying to keep us apart. When she started writing her autobiography, she would call me out of the blue to help her fill in the blanks during those days. I was the trusted sidekick. HaHa. Such turbulent times but I only smile when I look back at them. I was only 22 and she 24 when we first met. Hard to comprehend ... and I also lacked the wherewithal to digest the fact that I was hanging out with the entire purple family. Such amazing people.

I weep when I see the clips of her interviews with Donnie Simpson, Gumble, and Arsenio. She clearly wasn't there, spiritually speaking. Thank you for allowing us to re-construct the story of Vanity & Prince, Especially, to me on that period, I was so young (13) so I really couldn't understand the context of time lapse at that time... But now, it seems so clear the real story talks about Vanity and Prince in some way! I've just seen it on Prime Video (actually) made me look for the characters. And I'm impressed on how this girl expressed her thoughts about God, even being too young, and other concepts. And how good she knew about it, since the beginning. Fame isn't for everyone. But Price made a tribute for her, after she passed away, and then, he passes too! Life is fantastic, if you are capable to fill your heart with love. Decisions just make us to accomplish our roles in life. Don't ever give up on your dreams, for anyone! I'm pretty sure, they're together in heaven, again. Fantastic video!

Poor Denise. I feel she really had to leave. I heard a lot of the interviews in her but not all. After this I believe her drug intake increased AFTER leaving, to cope. He was philandering, controlling any artist expression if you stayed, and never giving himself fully as it's impossible when you're spilt and usually you're going everywhere because you're scared of abandonment which cannot occur without attachment. So she had to go. Why'd he have to be so talented and fine but so destructive. SMH.

At the end of the day. Vanity went on with her life with the real Prince ,and stayed with him on to death. I remember in an interview she said when she was a child she asked for a bible for Christmas. She just wanted a bible. She was special, and always a child of God. Devil knew who she was and hit her hard with drugs. Messed her organ up. He'll go harder after people with special callings. But God got us. No weapon formed against us shall prosper. Up to us to answer or not answer our calling.. Denise humbled herself and answered her calling. Continue Riparadise Beloved Denise and Prince 🙏🏾💜

if you ever read the parts of the heroin diaries by Nikki sixx you will get the idea of where vanity was mentally after prince. sadly she carried a bad aura which even the guys in motley crue found too much to take. when she was around the practice sessions became contentious and dark. Glad she shed the darkness to find the light before she went home. The fact she had been through all of that and still had the fortitude and will to better herself and share her mistakes with others so they could avoid them says alot to me about her heart. Her inner beauty finally joined her outer beauty. I hope she is at peace.
