PRINCE & MORRIS DAY & The TIME The EDIT The MOVIE The SEQUEL w/Deleted Scenes

THE TIME the edit the movie was a drama filled breakdown of friendship. Jesse Johnson lobbing some truth bombs regarding childhood bullying and the real reason Jimmy & Terry were a problem for Prince. Morris Day is looking at crystalizing himself into the zeitgeist. Prince is watching his master plan mature into ripeness. Prince's inner counterpuncher is motivated to created a new Time off the skeletal remains of the old Time. He will call them, the FAMILY. Its all too much to really take in so we edited this thang down and here it was. Time's Up.

Morris was lucky after Purple Rain. He was doing alot to fuck his career - which was part of the reason Prince needed to be rid of him anyway. He would end up back at Prince's door - on drugs and needing money - at one point. Without Prince, there is no Morris Day. I give him credit for at least saying as much in his book.

Purple Rain movie made 70.3 million USD. The Purple Rain soundtrack sold 13 million copies. So that is a huge amount of money and The Time and the Revolution did not make anything significant to talk about.

I was in school working in retail. Morris and the Time came in. I waited on Morris. He was a jerk. I was hustling as a young man. A teenager. First job. I didn't need his bs. I switched with my co worker. I waited on the other gentleman. Never cared much for the Time. Loved Prince though.

Well, I'm sorry that happened... I've met/worked with quite a few celebs. And some led me to my personal philosophy... "It's best to NOT meet your idols if you want to maintain your idealistic view of them sometimes...." BUT ;) I hung out with Morris and the Time here in town after a concert, and Morris was the nicest dude in the room. You gotta grow up and realize that with age comes wisdom... Sometimes. They're people, experiencing things that are alien to a lotta folks.

Here's the vibe I get from the history of The Time, Minneapolis music scene of the 70"s and what these legends are willing to allude to. Prince was not considered one of the fella's, he was probably poked fun at and even bullied. Andre was not to be played with and had more social credibility than Prince, thus he functioned as a sort of hall pass. When Prince, who never fit in socially stepped away on the sly and got a solo deal it added another layer of resentment. Then he started employing dudes that used to poke fun at him and they rebelled- which they were programmed to do anyway. Prince felt some kind of way about Jimmy and Terry before he brought them on board, so reducing them to a barely surviving entity for his funk music was not out of the question. Terry was a Varsity athlete as well as Jerome, there's a mindset and confidence a guy gets from being good at sports. Prince played sophomore but knew he wasn't big enough to play Varsity etc. There's some real Revenge of the Nerd's dynamic going on with Prince vs The Time. He knew they were bad and he knew the could compose, he just got off on being the only game in town for guys who used to tease him. Just a guess.

@@Sinnik22 Yes!. Prince even got off on having Morris in the room. What he didn't plan on was the fact that Terry and Jimmy saw through that and wanted Morris to shine in the movie. He also didn't plan on Jimmy and Terry being great songwriters and producers. They were actually less egocentric than Prince who had a personality forged in insecurity. Morris was more of a team player in who he brought into the time, Prince would have been happier if he brought in 5 dudes from five different bands.

Men are funny about height, and it's not just the little guys, it's the bigger guys who have to be subjected to the little guys leadership. Most of them admit freely he's completely on a different level than them musically...they just wish he were taller lol. Had he not been a jerk they still would have resented the fact that he made them. There are words like mysogny ect, but none to describe that phenomenon among males. Steph Curry deals with some of that.

He could have had it all and I'm not deluded enough to believe he had to be in tumult to create. He could have had his family and loyal friends as a constant. We all are our own worst enemies when we neglect our full persons and don't face our fears to fix problems. I'm glad I got to hear him talk about his dad not taking him back and his opinion of himself at that time.

Prince probably was a control freak, but he was striving to become the world greatest entertainer of all time. I hate when they speak trash about Prince, like Prince said in his interview with Travis !!! we were in love then we should be in love now .and also he was told his so call friends talking behind his back say fucked up shit about him. It hurts him, wow, that hurt me to hear him say that. Now he doesn't have to worry about noone saying or doing anything to him now .R.I.P. PRINCE ROGER NELSON YOU WILL FOREVER BE MISSED 🎸💜💜💜💜💜😥

My theory is that people who were with him in the early days feel entitled to part of his legend. Deep down, they feel that he owes them something. Morris still complains about get $50K for Purple Rain - when that was the deal he signed. No one was going to put him in a major motion picture. Yes, he was a big reason it was a hit but it woudl not have existed without Prince. Those guys want to claim their roles are greater than they were and that they were so pivotal in Prince's success. The fact of the matter is that they were sidemen - very good sidemen but sidemen just the same.

But why not tell Prince upfront that this is what you are going to do since he was not paying you enough? Perhaps it would have been leverage to get a raise. If not, part ways and avoid the professional breach of missing a show. When you do that, you are messing with your employer's business. Prince was their employer.

Prince should be the nicest person? He didn't become rich by a lottery ticket; he worked his ass off like many people; in an industry that has the odds of success like a lotto ticket. Why should he give anything away for free (e.g. recording gear)?

Prince recognized people that didn't need him. Jam and Lewis r 🐐 songwriters u can't hold that down. N his own way he tested their loyalty 2 each other. Morris was afraid 2 step away

I agree with everything you have said except that Morris was afraid to step away. He was not afraid. Leaving was not an option. After the film, he finally did step away, but not without having to pay $300,000.00 to get out from under the contract with Prince. (This is Pepe Willie's story.) That contract was pivotal in seeing the movie to completion as close to the original vision as possible. For that, everyone can be grateful. Think of the devastating effects that stepping away would have had. Morris was half of the team of Day and Benton, the critical, comedic element of Purple Rain, and carried the comedy of that film. He was the frontman of The Time, which was itself a character in the film. Stepping away would have devastated the film, and both Morris's and Prince's careers. Jimmy and Terry did not want Morris to step away from the opportunity he had been given as a co-star. They were able to step away from The Time because they had something else to step into. But Morris needed to stay to finish collecting what he had worked so hard for. Morris was a natural talent, but as a co-star in this film, he had never acted previously. His role as the character of Morris Day occupied at least half of this film. Being devastated by the loss of his backing band members, he no longer had the confidence or the desire to continue to play the role that Prince had put him up to. Morris was angry, resentful, retaliatory, under a lot of pressure, in the grip of cocaine addiction, and was self-destructing. It took Alan Leeds and Craig Rice corraling Morris to the movie set on numerous occasions to help ensure the success of the film. I have no doubt that when the film was finally in the can, there was a collective sigh of relief that could have registered on a barometer. Morris hung on as long as he had to to get the job done. The pressure of playing the character of Morris Day came with a high price of losing his own identity and the resulting addiction in exchange for being himself. Morris was done long before he physically left (after the first and last show of the second iteration of The Time.) There was no fear of leaving. It was just a matter of time.

I think the whole band was living vicariously through Morris, he had the relationship close enough to go there. Bean and Jesse were from Illinois and Jimmy and Terry were from South. Morris and Andre were North Minneapolis and knew him longer.
