The comparison with Prince and Rick James was that they were musicians that actually could sing , as well as write ,arrange and produce music . The both of them were self contained , also at that time funk was chants or the whole band singing it together , or may have 2 or 3 lead singers . So that's where the comparison comes in

You're right. Rick James and Prince were both equally talented and couldn't stand each other because they were equal in talent and showmanship. A radio station here in D.C. had a battle between Rick James and Prince on the radio Saturday afternoon and people called in to vote. The final tally was kind of tight but Prince won 65/35. Both artists were dynamic forces of nature.

If anything, they should make a tv series about the rivalry between Rick James and Prince. And make sure that it’s made with love for both of them, but also with a critical view. An honest and respectful portrait of them both. And in between all of that you’ll have all the conflicts inside of each camp, as well as The Time etc. Would be a fine drama, with a bit of soap opera. The music performances doesn’t have to dominate. Dialogue, background music, the club, writing, every now and then, here and there, some actual performances. But doesn’t have to rely on the actors being as multi talented as these guys were.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This edited version is amazing and 30 minutes and I still could have watched more! The whole Rick James saga is entertaining. Much respect to all the talented groups but for me Vanity 6 were electric/fire - Mary Jane Girls and even A6 didn't have what V6 had Susan/Brenda/Vanity just sizzled or maybe it is just the folklore of them being part of the legendary Triple Threat Tour ,-idk but V6 just brought something different. I wasn't ready for that clip of Teena Marie singing 😮😎💜 I love Jill Jones and the clips of Jill and Vanity telling their stories in their own words. Vanity falling in love with Prince in LA and then coming to cold Minneapolis to join Prince and his harem.😮😮😮 How Prince handled his women makes me wonder if her really did do some kind of mind control🤣🤣🤣 The double screen of MaryJane Girls and V6 was a legit treat. You spoiled us @Sinnik22 this was amazing.

I hate to say this because I grow up listening to Rick James and digging his funk way more then Prince. But when the smoke cleared Prince wind up being a way better artist then Rick James. I enjoyed BOTH!! WHO CARES about who out performed who!! Hell I saw The Time upstage Prince but it did not mean that much to me,they just had the better show that night or that tour. And to be honest MTV did not let MANY of the black artist on their show AND it was rumored that Warner Brothers saw that Michael was going solo(in the late seventies) and needed somebody to compete with him and they found the right one for it! As far as Rick, his first four albums were awesome and had MTV gave Rick some spots it may have been a little different who knows. I will admit after seeing Rick perform a couple of times as a teenager you could tell he was cocky as hell!! Hey just about ANY band can get upstaged on any night or any tour! Prince did seem to be more focused on his career and did not let the drugs and booze interfere. I was a big fan BOTH at certain points one just had a better career than the other. I play Rick James songs and jam out and I do the same with Prince. Thank GOD for BOTH!!!

People already forgot that in 1981 and 1982, Rick James was bigger than Prince. Street Songs album is bigger than Controversy, artistically and commercially. When Throwin' Down album came out in Spring 1982, songs Dance Wit Me and Standing In The Top (with The Temptations) are huge, but the album is only gold compared to Street Songs. And finally, Prince came out with his classic 1999 album in late October 1982 and when Little Red Corvette video clip was played in heavy rotation on MTV, he took the lead. Rick James came back in August 1983 with 'Cold Blooded' album but it was done at that point for him, drugs already destroyed him!
