PRINCE ERAS 1980-1983

I like to call this era, “the climb”. This is before Prince Rogers Nelson was a bonafide über mensch. There were the last vestiges of that Mick Jagger stage presence still present in his shows. His frenzied staccato foot movement was ever present. In his European interview Prince was telling the guy, “I don’t listen to other music because I don’t like to overdo things.” he threw a little shade at Smokey Robinson through some shade at Jimi Hendrix and he wasn’t ready to appreciate his James Brown influences on stage the way he would later do that on the purple rain tour.
Prince was still very much uncooked. But he still had a powerful sense of self and that manifested itself in his style. The sense of style was always pretty singular. This period of time it was to become iconic and 81 he went to Europe and he saw for the first time, the different styles and fashions that were connected powerfully to music Punk leather hair colors were so tied to the music scene in England that prince couldn’t help but notice. New wave was sort of in its infancy stage and people like adamant, and Duran Duran were soon to really take over for the old rock ‘n’ roll style.
Hip-hop was also in its ascendancy in New York, and that was a whole other fashion trend thing that prince would have had to of seen even though it wasn’t that present in his visual style Blondie the Ramones, the New York dolls in America. The Clash, the sex pistols Adam and the ants in the UK Michael Jackson had released off the wall and he was pretty much on his way to superstardom and kind of was already a superstar. The 80s were still in their infancy
PRINCE’s Rolling Stones experience Bobby zhe talked about how important that was for Prince. Prince had always had ideas of being a guru for new acts and he loved the movie IDOLMAKER, and for the next four or five years that’s exactly what he was. Vanity six, the Time, Jill Jones, Jimmy, jam, and Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Mars de Susan Moonsie and Brenda Bennett along with the revolution, Bobby Z, Lisa, Coleman, Mark Brown, Dr. Fink, and the last bits of Andre Cymone’s and Prince’s BFF relationship were all features of Prince’s “end of the innocence”.
Lisa Coleman. The keyboard player for the revolution has noted on several occasions that Prince was a great band leader. At this point in his career being a leader was the most important thing and relationships and youthful ties, youthful ties, were something for the past. The roll out for 1999 as well as the drama during the triple threat tour was definitely a signal that everything was set for changes. Also, that prince was a boss.
Enjoy this compilation/edit.

INCREDIBLE film! This is pro-level, all the way! Wow! What an amazing editing job, & so much incredible footage & many insightful interview clips! Lot of rare news clippings & journal pages, too! I had to freeze-frame it a bunch. Truly a great chronicling of this special moment in the early 80s some of us were blessed to live through in real-time, as adolescents learning from this incredible Maestro & his Fam. (The concert vid of The Time doing "777-9311" at 24:17 is just EPIC! Jesse is on his Jimi Hendrix whammy-bar vibe! Never saw it, & I've seen a LOT. It's heavily edited, but SO DOPE! Would love to see the full song/show! It's multi-cam, very legit. Bravo!)

This is amazing! Also comprehensive, informative, and entertaining. An excellent documentary. I'm a middle-aged man that grew up during the late 1970s thru the early 1980s as a teenager that was inspired and driven by eclectic, inventive, and creative music! This is my dude PRINCE'S best period in his musical career. He was so driven, funky, and fuckin' far-out! There has NEVER been a Black artist like him before or after. This cat broke all the barriers that the previous Black musicians were either afraid of, or was told not to go there! Jimi Hendrix is the exception in rock n roll. George Clinton was another artist that took creative music into the stratosphere! The eighties were an exciting time to be young in cities like New York and Los Angeles. Prince was ahead of his time. This cat was phenomenal!

I agree, Prince was the man, the genius, the soundtrack to our generation (Gen-X). But I disagree just a little bit about breaking the barriers in Rock n Roll or some black artists were afraid to go there. Even though she didn't get enough credit in the beginning of her solo career, but Annie Mae (aka Tina Turner), did "go there" and did the damn thing and blew up even bigger in Rock, Pop throughout the 80s.

@@MrJuly1990ish Props to Tina Turner for her success as a pop star in the eighties. However, I'm sure that her best work had to be with Ike Turner doing the real r&b, blues, and rock n roll. That pop shit wasn't inspired, funky, or influential in my opinion!

Hey, it's one of your biggest viewers. I remember you said you were making a stand-alone MJ video. I have a humble suggestion: Your channel should cover the aspects of Michael that his most ardent cult supporters view as blasphemy. I feel you can't talk about the man in totality regarding is obviously "complicated" (I'm being diplomatic) with his race/ethnicity. I am 38 years old, and I've LITERALLY read EVERY MJ book i could get my hands on since i was 9, including the fluff pieces and the more salacious material. If you're at all interested, I'd love to have a ZOOM meeting. MJ is the single biggest influence on me artistically, and i have next to no respect for channels that attempt to paint him as some kind of ethereal, angelic figure. Let me know if you're interested. It would be a pleasure.

@@Sinnik22 But a lot of it isn't nonsense, it's just things people are uncomfortable to hear. MJ was the biggest star in the galaxy, and in my humble opinion, it's a disservice to his legacy to leave some of his personal issues out, like his obvious issues with his blackness. Before Motown 25, Jermaine openly criticized him for "trying to be white". Again, this is just my personal opinion, but lots of MJ channels try to mythologize him, which does a disservice to his overall legacy. Without saying whether I believe he was a child predator, his issues with his race certainly warrant open discourse. Idk if you've seen it, but there's a 30 minute video on KZread filmed the day Bad was released, and even ardent fans were openly critical of his dramatic transformation. I was 2 when Bad came out, so I had absolutely no way of understanding why he literally looked like a dopleganger for his sister. As the music journalist Touré said "geniuses are supposed to be weird."

@@druscillalee2183 They were young and I'm sure jealousy played a part in that situation. I'm sure Andre was happy for Prince but I'm also sure he wanted that success for himself, only natural. I hate that they were no longer close because it seems they had a brotherly love for each other. I bet they both regretted the demise of their friendship.

Wait, that Stones audience was sweating Prince's sexuality and booing him off the stage, but they're cool with Mick's prancing around with knee pads and a Jets jersey?
