While he was British PM, David Cameron said about returning the diamond, "If you say yes to one you suddenly find the British Museum would be empty. I am afraid to say, it is going to have to stay put." So their defense is... we stole so much that if we gave it back it would be a hardship at how much wealth we would be giving up.

@@jameshudson8334 I assume this is mostly a tongue-in-cheek joke... but that diamond aside, a lot of antiquities held in western museums were just outright stolen from countries that were not controlled territories. That being said, it is also the British that came up with the common law that generally sovereigns and their appointed executives are immune to punishment for outright illegal acts they commit. If my law school memory is correct, it was a British governor who massacred people in his territory and then pardoned himself that enshrined this. Anyway... the diamond even has disputed origin claims that say its not rightfully India's so I don't care. But valuing property that was coercively removed from its ancestral home, whether legal or not, means subjectively valuing property over the life and goodwill relationship of other people. That is not something to either defend or be proud of. It also shows how poor a country is at its roots as they are admitting to not being able to make up for the economic loss.

I’m Irish and we were under English/British rule for longer than any other country - almost 8 centuries. And yet I don’t hold a grudge: I live in the present. So I would respectfully suggest to you - and to others with a similar victim mentality - that it’s time to build a bridge and get over the past. How pathetic it is to wallow in victimhood over things that didn’t actually happen to you. If we all did that, we’d all hate everyone because if one cares to look you’ll find that most nations committed crimes against others in the past and that the concept of empire did not begin and end with the British: the Mongolians, the Romans, the Turks, the Persians, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Aztecs - one could go on - all had empires. Should all of the peoples who were once part of those empires against their will continue to hate or hold grudges against those countries forever and for all time? Would that be conducive to a peaceful and harmonious world? I don’t think so.

People tend to forget that most of human history has been a history of conquerors and the subjects. Nowadays we are so lenient, “civilized” that we tend to forget. You can’t expect a sore loser to mourn the winner. Distasteful as it might be, the “oppressed” were people that didn’t have the means to defend themselves from a foreign enemy. There is no doubt, that if the roles were reversed they would’ve invaded too, or oppressed too. The weak don’t commit atrocities because they don’t want to, it’s because they can’t. History has shown many times how small nations once they got big became no different than any other big nation before.

The Indian govt asked them more than once to give it up, but they didn't, they didn't pay dime as reparations,( the British literally stole 45 trillion euros from India), and the most easier thing the queen could of have done was say sorry, which she didn't when she came to India, for a diplomatic visit. There's something sweet in the idea that the keeper's presence and possibly passion for the job was felt enough the bees still sought them out, confused by the change in schedule. Have been wondering how the corgis have taken her death silly as it may seem.

Thank you Trevor for finally speaking up!!! The saddest thing about all this fuss around the pass of the old lady is that millions of human beings don’t want to acknowledge the atrocities committed by a system that should have been abolished long ago. When the old lady decided to stay quiet about all the crimes committed by her system against millions of people in Africa, she gave her consent that what they did was okay.

I love Trevor! He can get away with cracking so many irreverant jokes that British tv hosts simply would not be permitted to in the UK - anything about Diana in particular would be a definite No-No! EDIT: Y'all are blowing up my phone! To be clear, British television cannot make commentary _right now_ . Once it is no longer "to soon" I assure you that brutality will be fully incurred. Furthermore- historically, the BBC have permitted a vast amount of critical free speech against the Royal family, and comedians, in particular, have been at the helm of the savagery we have served up. I hope you are all satisfied now.
