Roy is spot on about parents, though. You’re not an adult until your parent learn not to f*ck with you. My parents had a bad habit: every time I called or visited, they’d spend 20 minutes scolding me for not calling or visiting sooner. I had to nip that in the bud, so once when I visited I responded to their first complaint with apologies for not coming sooner. But they kept complaining, so I looked at the time, said I forgot I had things to take care of so I had to go. They were stunned - I had spent a total of 10 minutes with them. The next time I came over they started complaining, I looked at the time, my mom told my dad to zip it and changed the subject. Never had a problem with them since. Parents gotta learn.

I saw this "suing son" thing last week I think while I was browsing. It doesn't surprise me - it was bound to happen sooner or later. But there is an option for the grandparents - go be surrogate grandparents for kids that don't have any. Plus, they can always adopt a "new" son and try their luck with that one. If you can't appreciate the fact that your kid has been trying for 6 years, and you know he has, then you need to take a look at why you only had 1 child in the first place.

@darknightoftroy It was more an obligation over 100 years ago. Babies had less likely a chance to survive past toddler years, especially with small pox and turboculosis going around alot more at the time. Agrarian families also popped out kids by the bucketload to use as their workers around the farm or village. In modern society, it isn't really necessary anymore because of advances in medical care, income, technology and now strangers come to your house (or assisted living facility) to take care of you in old age.

Since my parents provided me food for 23 years and did their part in lineage expansion they expect the same from us. Is we say no, their work would all be pointless as their lineage ends with their son/daughter and all the work they done amount to zero. I guess this is part of reason why they pressure their children.

Indian parents have a controlling problem, most of them are having a midlife crisis because they lived their life according to their parents who forced them to do things they certainly did not want to do, so these people try to blow the steam by doing the same to their children. Its more common in India than you would imagine. Nowadays, times are changing children are getting more financial independence and leaving these controlling people so that they would not have to deal with this kind of things. And the behavior towards the daughter in law is so unimaginable, she is bad mouthed all over the family if she tries to do something for herself, basically if you marry in India in a joint family you are turning yourself to a baby producing machine and a maid for the rest of your life.

I mean, it's kiiiinda racist, and likewise so to sound like you're giving him a pass on it just because he's from 'that part of the world.' He's hilarious and the bit was mostly harmless, don't get me wrong, but what makes ethnic humor so fraught is that it can turn harmful when the *audience* loses self-awareness of their own natural prejudices even while they're laughing at it, and that's something that's out of the performer's control. I'm in no way condemning Trevor's material or delivery, but I'm also not praising it like you are, as that's tying one's wagon to the same unpredictable risk that the jokes themselves carry.

@@Fathimir My comment was specific to one incident in this particular video. So there is no way that I am suggesting that making fun on ethnicity should be an open pass for comedians like Trevor in this case. But it's the way the incident is presented matters at delivery. I am from India and I understand the incident and appreciated the way Trevor presented it to rest of the world while imitating Indians and I felt he was spot on in his delivery and didn't made any below the belt remarks. It was all fun, people were laughing at the incident and not at the Indian ethnicity as a whole. So that's why this specific issue and the way it was presented to non-indians mattered. Personally, as of now I have never seen Trevor Noah disrespecting a community but I might be wrong but as an Indian I am totally satisfied with the way he makes jokes on us Indians without making the joke look as an ethnically baised to Indians. But, I do agree that comedians must never breach the thin red line between fun and laughter and racial or ethnic discrimination of an issue.

I will give you one perspective. And if you are from one of the Western capitalist country, you would definitely understand. Let's assume your parents give you all their life earnings amounting to 5 million dollars to you, AND YOU TAKE IT, will there be no reciprocation on your behalf. You kidding me. It's basic economics, even if unsaid. Imo, son should have taken loan, if he was not going to be involved in this. And trust me, when he took money from parents, it was like he accepted this unsaid agreement. Now, ofc this is an assumption. But fault lies with their son too. He was a grown up man and should not have needed his parents' monetary help in the first place. Don't you agree. It's because parents help and give literally everu bit of their life, just to beg on the streets with such behaviour of sons. Don't you agree !! There are many other things in a culture which is unsaid. For instance, in many parts of the world, it is unsaid that wealth of parents will be inherited by their children, and not donated to charity. So, your argument don't hold must substance. Being an Indian, I can assure you, such incidents as above rarely happens. Yes, there are issues in this but we deal with it in our own ways, and it also depends on parent to parent. Since Indian parents are so loving and caring, no matter your age, they eventually understand even though there might be initial resistance. Heard of diplomacy. Something along those lines, where eventually after multiple talks, including with relatives and elders, matter gets sorted out. But there may be cases where children and parents might not find a common ground... but when love is mutual, one of the two sides will always compromise if ever such a need arises. We are a family oriented culture and family means a lot, to both the sides. I hope you understand where I am coming from.

As an Indian I can say with full confidence that every Indian parent is that way. The law suit was a bit much though . Edited :- Ok let me clear this up. Not every parent is like that but most of them are and I didn't want to generalize an entire population of 138 crore Indians. I just didn't think you guys would take it that way and make a big deal out of it. I didn't think people will bring arranged marriages and some other thing in this and start dissing my country or someone would get offended by this comment, and if someone did get offended by the comment I apologize. I guess I shouldn't have been so full of confidence 😕. Also for those who took it light-heartedly thank you for all the likes 😊.

Indian society has an extreme control problem over kids and especially towards daughter in law. As soon as son gets married, even working women forced into being almost modern slaves. And in-laws wants to be treated like kings and queens. If a woman doesn't give up on career and is focussed on herself, in-laws and whole household and relatives uses kids as a leash to stop the woman in her tracks toward the success. As soon as kid comes, they go back with the saying we are old can't help around with kid, woman is forced to quit job. Even if she doesn't and a maid is hired to look after the kid, even that is trashed. Endless name calling and bad mouthing, which neve stops. It's focussed at her and also goes back to the parents of Daughter in law. And the overall pressure makes woman to give up and act as maid for the whole family at the expanse of her own life. So, they are suing their son but actually they want their maid and control over both of them and their life through the kid. Suggest the couple to set a deal to pay up in certain years but then they have to relinquish their rights as parents over them and write an agreement to never contact them. As soon as this would come in effect you would see "we are old parents trick" coming back again. Shame on the parents... Big time

@@amatsumikaboshi5561 they are not the other one Indian parents who did that. In india it's common, because parents invest in kids that way. This is an investment let say so, kids would look after them in old age, not in nursing homes. Mostly that happens. When they get sons married, they extort out huge sum of money from daughter in law parents. So they have every way to gain from that matrimony. Most of the cost of marriage is put on girls fathers and whatever sons family has incurred is recovered from girl family. You have no idea how Indian society works.

@Robert Dowry Junior you have met just creme of the creme. Just to deny a problem flat out that it doesn't exist is the road block in moving ahead and that's the problem with the society. I am saying all this because I have seen this pan out so many times with educated progressive so called families that it's astonishing. Rural women still can sometime stand up and they make the news of making the wedding guest and groom go back but that's kind of news in Indian urban cities are like unicorn. But cases like Vismaya a medical student has to take a life are more frequent in modern Indian Society. So. Please get at the depth of orthodoxical ideology and how it manifest in highly educated elites should be your first process to learn Edit: it's no shame to address and accept that one has a problem, only then solution can be found out. I am Indian and I want all walks of life to have opportunity to work develop and be something at life, but to make an issue of things air and to publicly shame and create a stir of nothing to just exercise control over someone else life is utter nonsense. Does that sound like modern day slavery or colonial mindset? Yes it is and it's no shame that we are stuck with it. We brign a life in the world by our choice, they didn't ask for it. The person who made a choice to have a child owes to the child and is responsible for the child but the child owes them nothing. It's a rather moral obligation or can say Permian mindset to be actively involved with somewhat you care is to be cherished. But to dictate someone life, how come you don't see it? You won't because you have set ideals and you don't want to look past them. Look around most parents are abusive towards growing up children and as they age they direct their abuse to their spouses. It's reality of Indian society. It's just a way to control someone whole life. That's what it is. It's sad your prejudices don't let you see.
