This is very true, i have North African friends aswell as Middle Eastern and they also fight over the bill, some truly get disappointed if you pay twice. You can see the disappointment in their eyes as they argue over the bill. I guess it's not only a cultural thing but i think it's an Islamic cultural thing a good gesture in a way. They also have to accept a gift even when they do not want it or need it but they have to accept a gift because it's disrespectful if they deny a gift. Good folks.

So nostalgic! I'm Canadian, but this so resonates. As a kid, every time I went on a "fun" shopping day with my mother, grandmother and aunts, there was always a violent argument between them when the bill came for lunch, and it always upset me. Conflict stresses me. Once, as a teenager, I felt old enough and prosperous enough to interrupt and say, "I'll pay for it!". As a group, they all turned to me and angrily said, "Shut up!". No win!

Yes in my country, we fight over the bill and if someone comes over to our house, no matter who, we must be hospitable by offering coffee and fruits and if the time is around lunch or dinner, we offer the meal too and we insist on the guest to dine with us, and we have a guest suite annexed to our house as we shouldn’t let guests stay in hotels when they come from far away .... in the original Arab culture, generosity is a sign of dignity that’s why they call generosity “KARAM” and dignity is “KARAMA” ... the habit is however fading in big cities and more observed in smaller villages and amongst the Bedouin (nomads). so when I was younger on my first trip to USA, I insisted on the plumber who was sent by the landlord to fix the basin mixer to stay and have lunch with me, the guy backed up and had that weird look at me, later my friend told me I shouldn’t have done that and that the guy might have thought I was hitting at him... It was so embarrassing and I never told this to any one who knows me personally.

As a far east asian, my family and cousins fight tooth and nail for the bill. It's very competitive. My feeling for it is that I want to take care and make sure the food is covered. Some sort of ingrained obligation my parents taught me when they fought over the bill with my uncles and aunts.

In Iran, there is a rule of "tarof" that when a person wants to give you something as a gift or food,... You MUST refuse at first then he will ask you again and again, finally analyze what he thinks deeply and if he really wants you to have it or not, then make decision to accept or not. A bit confused at first but you will learn by striving😂😂😂

I am only 1% middle eastern but this is the one percent I inherited. Fighting over the bill and being sneaky about it. My usual method is to scope out the place, pretend to use the restroom but instead pay the bill. Lol but the flaw is to never sit near the restroom

Busra Carmel We need that more in America. Everyone’s too cheap to pay for another person. It’s like, if you have a job and earn money, it should be no problem. I’d understand if they’re broke or something, but regardless if they have a job, it’s like “You’re an adult! Pay for yourself!” Jeez, selfish cheap people invade US.
