The creatures were the best part of this for sure. One of the things I thought was weird, which is what Korey noticed, is that NONE OF THE PEOPLE seemed to really react to the fact that giant monsters are around them in every direction. Sure, Jackson's character is angry at Kong for killing his men, but the other characters are just like, "Okay, I guess we're here."

I'm with Korey on this one. A lot of people are treating the characters like they were as awful as something like Independence Day: Resurgence and I completely disagree. I grew up with adventure movies like Jurassic Park , The Lost World and Congo and this reminded me a lot of them. A lot of those didn't have deep characters either so I can't fault this movie too badly (As much as I love it, JP does have some thin characters too). Brie played a pacifist to Samuels war monger and most of her actions made sense as a journalist/photographer. Hiddleston took on the same type of role that Chris Pratt did in JW. Goodman and Kennel did fine. The Cole character had some really funny lines. Could this all star cast been utilized better? Sure but I'm still glad they were there. I didn't need this deep characterization. And contrary to what they are saying, a lot less then 50% of this movie is just humans. They are making it seem like there are long passages in this movie where nothing is happening (aka Godzilla) and that's not true. There's usually another creature on screen with these characters or about to be. The most time spent with the human characters is when John C Reilly arrives. But yeah, the dialogue was a little rough in areas. Even so, I didn't think it was as bad as they are making it out to be and it never ruined the experience or took me out of the film. I love DT but some of these guys are grading this movie as something it isn't. When people are being flung left and right by a giant ape, you aren't supposed to look at some of these scenes logically. It's just a feature length amusement park ride. Korey described it really well. And I know it's cool now to hate JW but if you did enjoy that, you'll probably have a lot of fun with this. The helicopter scene is incredible and is a lot longer then the trailers showed. That alone is worth going to the theaters. If you want fun escapist cinema, this is a solid B monster movie. It's dumb but it's a good time.

My stance on people saying "who cares about plot/characters, we're here for Kong": if the monsters are supposedly interesting enough to keep people entertained on their own without any well-written human characters, what's the point of even having human characters? Let alone ones played by big name actors that cost the studio a lot of money? Just animate a bunch of monsters fighting each other for 2 hou- oh wait that's fucking boring. All good movies have a good story, and a good story without compelling characters is pretty hard to do. Look at Jaws, Aliens, Jurassic Park - these movies aren't just classics because of action scenes with cool creatures. They have good stories and characters at the center. Sharks, Xenomorphs and T-Rexs make for good spectacle but they aren't what make those movies great. Characters like Quint, Ellen Ripley, and Ian Malcolm are what make them great.

Dawnelldo2 Not really they're there, whether you like it or not, to bring a relatable element to these films because it can be difficult to sympathize with monsters that just murder people or really connect with said monsters so you need human characters so we can project ourselves onto those characters and that element can sometimes be well written, sub par, or just flat out bad

I really enjoyed this movie, I agree, this movie was about KONG. Not the characters. And as long as they got Kong right (which they did), this movie worked for me. I'm someone who typically cares so much about character development, and besides Hiddlestons and Larsons characters, I got enough character development with Jacksons, Reillys, and Kebbels characters. This was a movie with spectacular creatures and creature fights, and that was enough for me. Great review, always enjoy listening to you guys.

I liked the characters in this movie. They don't dwell too much into their pasts and such but the characters actions in front of the situation talked a lot more than any poor exposition scene would have done. And why bringing name actors for these parts? Easy, in this kind of blockbuster/high budget films you need to attract as much people as you can! An unknown actor won't do that! But Tom, Brie and Sam will! You need to make your money back and you will use any advantage you can in order to achieve that. Great film! Pure adventure and fun :) I'm 100% with Korey on this one.

I'm with Korey. It's called Kong: Skull Island. I'm there to see Kong, the other creatures on Skull Island, and to see Kong fight those other creatures on Skull Island. End of fucking list. The movie delivered on what the title and marketing promised. The criticisms about the dialogue and characterizations are legit, and if this were any other kind of movie, those faults would seriously diminish my overall enjoyment of it. But considering what this movie is and what it delivers, those criticism become minor as a result. It's like if I'm going in there to see a Friday The 13th movie, I'm not going to go in with Schindler's List level expectations regarding the "human element", and I'm not going to take it apart and analyze it like I would a movie like Schindler's List. I'm there to see boobs and to see Jason kill a bunch of dumb fucks in entertaining ways. If it delivers on that, job well done. You can't apply the same level of expectation and criticism to every single genre of film. Kong: Skull Island was entertaining and a hell of a lot of fun. Period.

I definitely agree with you guys on the human elements of the film! Especially the fact that they don't seem fazed AT ALL about the whole situation they're in. Some of the cast yell out "Are we not gonna talk about this?!'" with a bit of a panicked voice, but it doesn't reflect on their actions or whatsoever.

The characters weren't amazing in the movie, but they weren't horrible! I liked the characters, especially the soldiers, they brought on good chemistry. i just think the movie got on to a very rocky start, but once shit starts going down, the movie gets to where it belongs. And sure, the characters could've been developed better, but I think they still fit into the film pretty well. This is a good popcorn movie, the movie knows that, and it does what it does pretty well.

This is a great throwback to the old school monster adventure movies. Yeah none of the cute silliness in the current monster films. If your looking for a fun action movie its a great time. They also include some really gritty songs and don't sugar coat the movie with pop B.S. John C. Reily is great in the film and it really gives you the feeling of a jungle adventure movie. The dialouge is a bit cheesy but it fits in with the film. Its not nearly as bad as many Hollywood shit shows I've seen these days. I hope that this movie makes enough so that we can see more old school monster adventure films on the big screen. I'd give it an old school thumbs up.

As someone on the outside just watching this I just want to give my honest opinion of what I saw and sadly it was a,3 against one team up where the one who really liked the movie really was the source of the others laughter and ridicule. For starters nothing about this film should make anyone say it was TERRIBLE like the man in the blue shirt so adamantly stated. Whether you had a problem with dialogue or characters or acting I believe we have all seen complete trash clunkers that debut at the box office to less than 5 million and aren't even in the top 8 opening weekend.Terrible as the word was used are for movies without talent casted,no story,no special effects,no action. We have to admit terrible movies are out there and there are enough comedy, action, special effects, creatures fighting to keep this movie from being called terrible. I think that in my opinion is misleading critique and an exaggeration in my opinion. I agree completely with the gentleman (and forgive me for not knowing names,I intend no rudeness,I apologize) that really enjoyed the film. I would not be surprised if this movie wins an Oscar for visual effects. Kong has never looked better and I applaud this King Kong film for presenting him in an original more new, story instead of pure beauty and the beast. It hinted he cared about Brie Larson but just the right amount. I feel the story and acting was adequate for a reboot and to set up Kong as we head for a fully grown Kong and Godzilla movie.

Okay, I watched the film and it's a middle on full-price, I'm in the same part as Korey were everything was indeed a lot of fun and very exciting to see Kong beat the crap put of every monster on the island and not just to see him fight but for the film to take their own time and show Kong as a normal being in the island and giving him expressions that define the figure he represents and that part about Kong was really cool; I guess that I certainly enjoyed the cast, maybe not the characters they portrayed so much but the cast was great and I think they helped carry the film, as well as giving not high quality, but simple and good performances, as well as fun beats of humor, at least for me I enjoyed the humor of the film, overrall, I really loved the movie, so much fun on the level of Pacific Rim and Godzilla, cannot wait for that big showdown in 2020!!

you see the difficult thing with horror and giant monster movies is it is incredibly difficult to get it right when it comes to making your human characters interesting enough on their own. Very few movies ever get this right: like Jaws, Alien/Aliens, tremors, The Thing 1982 to name a few. as much as I love the original King Kong and Godzilla, I cannot deny that the parts with the human characters are always my least favorite parts of the movies. it's difficult to explain, but when it's done right you just feel it

The story was mediocre and they killed off the only interesting character way too early. It was amazingly directed though. The HALO jump sequence was incredible.

Both Cranston and Godzilla weren't in it enough. It focused way too much on the human characters, which would be fine if they weren't the most bland boring people ever. Shin Godzilla was much better.

Shin Godzilla was good but it was not at all what 2014 should've been. 2014 did what it set out to do, and that was be an entertaining modern monster movie. Shin Godzilla was a political film that dealt around a monster. 2 completely different things. I also didn't find a problem with these night scenes you talk about, I could see everything fine. Military presence has also been a huge presence in Godzilla films, so I don't see your point with that.

JEFFREY They were funny as podcasts but kind of worthless as movie reviews. I remember laughing a lot but not understanding what they thought of the movie until the rating. While when it's only Korey and Martin, you get a useful review and jokes. When you add Goodwin he just sides with Martin on everything and they gang up on Korey. And that's funny, but not really an useful review. The reviews are better without sacrificing the fun when it's just two of them, it's all I'm saying.

People can hate on the 2014 Godzilla, but overall I believe it was a better film than this one imo. Everything Kong was great, and I enjoyed about the first act of humans. The rest was nothing too special, but it was still a fun time. The direction, vfx, and cinematography of this can't hold a candle to the 2014 Godzilla though. Say what you want about Godzillas screen time, but when he showed up you felt like you earned it every time. In this, Kong is thrown at you so often that he doesn't feel special being on screen after a while. It's a pretty fun Kong flick overall, better than the ones from the 70's but not better than Peter Jacksons film or the '33 film (which I kind of regret watching before seeing this).

what does Pacific's Rim, Trimmers, and All the Jurassic Park movies have in common? they're all fun movies to watch where the human characters are plot devices and not the center piece of the film. I'm not excusing poor characters and writing because we have great examples of gud monster movies with great characters(The Host comes to mind), but just like the movies I mentioned skull island has a unique world and enough amazing visuals to overlook it's human characters. If you're gonna have poor characters and writing at least keep it to a minimum and show more monster action....in that regard this film delievered.

  • @slowninja3028

This review actually proved my point of why I think so many critics are hung up on "The Characters". With such an A-List cast i assume they expected a A-List story and acting....some movies are known for having actors for the sole purpose of drawing an audience. Pacific Rim was almost the same as skull island and I don't think that movie was critique as hard for the same problems.

28:30 Korey is acting like Kong is an exlover he still hasn't gotten over 😂 They're right! Speaking as someone who has binged these reviews for the past few weeks, it's clear monster movies hold a special place in your movie heart lol So things like crappy dialogue or shallow humans don't matter as much to Korey in this case because it's a natural part of that genre. His focus is on, how did you excute the important parts? The action, the monster itself and his arc. Like Shonen anime, are they formulaic, sure. Do they get insanely strong when they "Fight for their friends!!!!", yup! But how does each particular story deliver on the aspects that make Shonen series popular, be it animation, interesting and character driven fights or an enjoyable cast to follow around (voiced by the same 7 people as the last show). All around Kong was Alright in my eyes a C movie. But as a monster flim goes it's an easy A lol better than most I've seen. I'm watching the Godzilla review next and I feel like it's gunna be part 2 of this "conversation" lol

This movie spoils itself. One of the characters is introduced writing a letter to his family. People with families always end up dead in movies. Then the end credits spoils the after-credits scene by saying "Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan are properties of Toho Co. Ltd". That being said, I did enjoy Kong: Skull Island a lot. I like Godzilla (2014), but I like Skull Island more. I can't wait for Godzilla: King of Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. I've always been a bigger Godzilla fan, so I hope he wins.

Granted I haven't seen Kong Skull Island yet, but I had the same problem with Pacific Rim, which I think was going for the same feel that Korey said this movie was. I loved the creature feature aspect of Pacific Rim, but you still have another story to tell besides the fight scenes and if that's not engaging enough to keep me going, then I have to take points away from that. Like if you have characters in a movie and clearly they are trying to give them some type of attitudes, like in Pacific Rim, it just felt flat and boring, so in between the fights I was cringing.

I've seen it and I liked this a lot more then Pacific Rim. I had the same issues with PR that you did. The good thing about Skull Island is a lot of time is spent away from the human/human interactions and the material is propped up by the A list cast. Yes it has some spotty dialogue at times but the movie is constantly moving. It really is like a return to the 90s adventure era.
