The show never got an ending in it's original run. Now the creator has returned over a decade later to finish up the story in a 10 episode mini-series. While it was a well made "family friendly" animated show, now it's aimed more squarely at an older crowd with more violence and more intense content. Not only is it a great series, but it's one of the most prominent examples of western animation that is more apart of the action/drama side of television, which is unheard of in American animation since most western animation is comedic in nature, including all of the "adult animation" on TV like Archer, South Park, Family Guy, etc. So, it's a return to a great series that desperately needed an ending to finish the saga, as well as an exploration of a type of genre that western animation usually doesn't explore.

I still don't get why people are mad about the twist being an Asian brain in a Caucasian body. Isn't that a really interesting sci-fi idea? Being mad would make sense if the anime/manga character was human, but *the whole point* of this story is how human identity gets fucked up when you replace humanity with technology.

I don't know. The PG 13 rating wasn't a problem to me. I have seen like all the Ghost in the Shell shows and movies. Nothing screamed R rating to me except maybe Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. That one was kind of creepy and violent.

Several scenes in this film are exact in visual comparison to the original Ghost in the Shell (1995). Some parts shown in the city are even exact re-creations of the original artwork. Scarlett Johansson does not wear a wig in this film, her own hair was dyed black with blue tips. The body suit that Scarlett Johansson wears in the film as Major's synthetic body, known as the Thermosuit, is made out of silicone. The lights that seem to glow from the Geisha's robes were accomplished by lining the collars of the kimonos with LED lights.

I felt that it was an intro to ppl who have not seen or heard of GITS to the possible movie franchise. IT was good but had flaws.....IF they have a sequel, then I think would bring in the intrigue and political drama. With the Anime especially with the series, they have more time to tell a story and more time with the characters. In a movie you really have limited time to tell the story.....

I just caught your show for the first time. Pretty funny! As an Asian woman, I actually didn't mind Scarlett Johanssen playing Major. She looks almost exactly like the anime version. If you look at Manga comics from Korea to Japan, they have lots of characters who look Caucasian. That's a big reason why many Asians are okay with Scarlett in the film. They also don't get the whitewashing issue in America because there isn't a multi-culturalism issue in most Asian countries. The biggest audience for this movie is really the Japanese in Japan because it's part of their pop culture.

Guys, I don't know if it's just my girlfriend and me, but as asians ourselves, we definitely did not think of the "putting the asian brain into white bodies thing" counted as an offensive element to us. Well there are some offensive shit in this movie for sure, but this ain't it. If you are an asian person too and have a different view please reply and tell me how you differ. Here's my view: In the story it actually makes sense because hey we know that it's a company that's mostly run by people from western countries. The two significant people who are responsible for the brain transferring shit-show are white. Would it really make sense if they were producing asian bodies just because the teenagers who they are trying to brutally murder and brainwash are asian? I doubt that. Come on, we do know that major and Kuze got fucked in ass by Hanka right? Why was this a shocker? Should they have been like "aw this can't be right this is racist... We should make them asian bodies so that they can preserve their own cultural identities while we fuck their lives over."? And even if that is the offensive part, I would more likely to think that yeah that Hanka corp is pretty racist or those 2 people who led this project are racists, but it in no way makes me think that this movie or its creators are being offensive by doing this. It's fine. My other point might upset some people as it saddens myself, but I think asian people who have been living in asian countries would tend to agree with this. We ourselves are quite racist by popular standards in countries such as the US. It's not always quite a conscious thing, but many of us do tend to consider people from western countries of higher position than us in certain aspects. It's caused by culture, history and many other elements. This can even go to some extremes in our pop culture, and I can't really presume how people from western countries might think of this: We tend to randomly use images of western people in ads to appeal to our people even if being foreign has nothing to do with the whole thing. I would totally say that westerners are quite objectified in our daily lives in a similar way to the female image. And this is only one of the countless ways that this mentality exists. I am not saying this to say hey this is totally normal. Some of us do know this is fucked up in the way that this is actually racist against both westerners and ourselves. We just haven't got to an point where our cultures are ready to discuss this because to most people, this is totally invisible. So you know what? I bet if you ask asian people in asian countries what they think of transferring their brains into strong and pretty white cyborg bodies, some would say it's pretty cool without a flinch. Hell, maybe even Motoko thinks it's pretty cool lol (obviously joking). Finally, I know it's an old-ass topic now and that this wasn't discussed as an issue in this video, but since I still see people mentioning this, regarding scarjo play the part, I think some people do need to keep a cool head and realize that the original character Motoko's asianness doesn't have much to add to the story or the character in the animated universe, even when the story is set in a somewhat asian background. That's the truth behind why many Japanese people responded in the viral video from Japan did not care about it. The character totally can be of any race without affecting the story or the character by much. Fans who loved the 1995 anime hopefully didn't love it because of how the major was asian or specifically Japanese, but rather the story and the artistic style. And the story was exploring the subject of identities. Major had a hard time defining herself because of how the ethnicity can be pretty meaningless when you are mostly cyborg with little memories of the past. This scarjo movie is doing something different with that idea (which I didn't enjoy), but the character still doesn't have to be asian. If say, a famous asian character, whose cultural background heavily defines the character itself, was played by a non-asian actor, that might be a real issue. However I don't think something as dumb and fucked up as that would actually happen these days. Like what kind of film production would decide to have a white dude play Martin Luther King Jr. right? This was totally not a whitewashing issue to begin with but rather looked more like an example of how some people tend to take politically correctness into unnecessary directions. In fact, it kind of offensive to consider that asian people would blindly insist on having Motoko's character stayed asian even when little to none of her asian elements define her. Okay now haters go ahead and blast me.

In 2017, giving any movie credit for being "visually stunning", is a load of bollocks. Especially when considering that in an age where amazing CGI isn't new at all. This movie, even from the the very first trailer, appeared to be a vapid and hollow mockery of the original manga/anime film.

You say they went out the way to be faithful. I say it did nothing but copy the franchises most iconic scenes but only duller, with less color or interest. The story offers nothing new for anyone who's seen the original GITS movie. What's worse is that they dumbed down the stopry to appeal to the less intelligent.

Just watched the movie, im not in love with the movie, but it was still engaging enough to be enjoyable. I don't have issue with the whitewashing aspect. From the stand point of this world, racism was not an issue, ppl were modifying their bodies how they like. The scientist was a white woman, so it's fine that she created white features for the shells. Plus, they don't want her to resemble her old self anyways. But really, as an Asian, I would appreciate they cast Asians into big role where it be appropriate, though I'm not sure there are many asians who don't rather want to be doctors, lawyers, etc than actors.

I first saw this on Starz Action channel in the early 2000's, and I gained a huge appreciation for Animie/Manga. It's sad that this wasn't as good as it should've been. What's worse is that this is probably the best visual adaptation of this movie that we'll probably ever see, at least for awhile. I also think, that if they stuck with the original R-rating, it would've helped it a little more.

Live action anime adaptations are getting better. Slowly but surely. (disregarding that shitty Airbender adaptation) Speed Racer, while ultra-ambitious and handled by two fans of the series (The Watchowskis) was garish and over-stuffed Dragonball Evolution was handled by cynical asshole movie execs and felt like Twilight with kung-fu (Hell, Toriyama tried to gain input on the film but was snubbed completely by the studio) This film was passable. It was visually comprehensive and competently directed and acted. Again, all the energy went into the visuals and effects while the screenplay fell by the wayside

I rented this movie recently and as an outsider looking into Ghost in the Shell series, I thought it was very beautiful. Yeah, I noticed there were elements from other mention movies and for the racism...I see it, yeah it was a bit BS, especially with the false memories, and most would argue that it's a robot body much like Goku being white instead of Asian cause he's an alien. But that's when I start comparing rotten apples to week old apples. But overall, I would give it a B-. And that's me being generous.

  • @LOKITYZ

I'm an Asian myself, and the ending didn't really bother me. I have not seen the movie, so I don't really know the full context of why her robotic version was made into a different ethnicity, but if it was handled well, it wouldn't really be offensive. From a completely neutral point of view, I think it reinforces the themes of identity and self that the Ghost in the Shell franchise has always been about. From a racial perspective, the idea that an a dead Asian woman was rebuilt as a machine and had her ethnicity changed into Caucasian does seem offensive. It implies that she was "improved" from her previously inferior form. And it made it possible for a white actor to play a role that could have been given to an Asian actor. But I don't know the whole context to it all and how it was handled in the movie. If it was handled poorly, with bullshit explanations or no explanation at all, then I could understand how offensive that would be. One of the main reasons why the ending and whitewashing in general wouldn't bother me as much is because I'm not American, and my country has its own film industry. There aren't any whites stealing roles from us here. Even though a huge portion of films we have here tend to suck, but they're still ours and star our people. We have our own film industry to care about. So, when we see Hollywood films, we just expect to see white people. It's an industry made by white people, of course the majority of people we are going to see are white. WE DON'T FUCKING WORSHIP WHITE PEOPLE. If it was incredibly obvious whitewashing like having a Chinese character played by a white actor using eye makeup or eye CGI, there will be anger. The whole diversity in film thing doesn't really concern us as well. Whenever a a white character gets its ethnicity changed into another, we don't really care. It's not seen as progressive or a step forward. What matters is if the movies are good or not. All the things that happen behind the scenes do not affect us. But it's not the same for minorities who live in the US. What happens behind the scenes affects them as well. So I understand why they would get offended. And I do get annoyed by lame justifications that are made by some people when things like this happen.

I'm Asian, my reaction to the 'white-washing' is that this movie can be interpreted as a deeper criticism of today's Asian culture. Asians are white-washing themselves... they are surgically modifying themselves to look more Western. People were aghast at Michael Jackson's transformation to a white dude, look at the surgical alterations Asians, male and female, are doing. So, yeah if Asian society and technology continue to advance to a point of actually switching into cybernetic bodies, I believe that they would choose an Euro/American body over an Asian one.

Its the same in the OG anime, the major is a little asian girl in a white machine body. The Body the major is in is a mass produced body.

Robocop, the matrix, blade runner, cyberpunk game vibes etc in one. We need more of this. I enjoyed this more than blade runner 2049. Though I enjoyed both.

I think people who are criticising the end are missing the point of the twist. It was well established in the plot and totally justified in the sense that this was a cold, uncaring and disgusting corporation that was using people as meat for the grinder indiscriminately. It makes sense therefore they cared so little for the identities of these people that they didn't even give them the same cultural identity as their former lives. Moreover, if they don't want their shells to remember being people it makes sense they wouldn't keep their cultural identities intact.

The movie was dope! Of course, there has to be an awareness for the lack of asian casting in the states. It seems as though asian americans have more of an issue with it than Asians do (being in asia, they're media is already saturated with their ethnicities). This movie just happen to be a target for people's outrage and agendas. Despite my alias here lol I am a brown guy, the ending suited the plot for the adaptation, didn't see it the same way

The funny thing is I'm almost certain if you put any other race as the leading lady in this movie, Asians probably WOULD have had a problem with it. But a white woman? No biggie. Just don't let it be a black woman or a Indian woman etc.

The505Guys A ton of Asian Americans are very vocally against this. Can people please stop recycling this awful stereotype where Asian people are like white people's dogs? Do people really just believe every stereotypical trope they hear or see about us and immediately resort to blanketing every Asian out there? Mhm. Sounds like racism.

"she's a cyborg and can look like anyone. hmm, let's pick Scar jo to star in her 2300th sci fi role!" I don't even blame Scar Jo for this, but if u never give Asian actors a shot, they will never be "bankable".

In the GITS source material The Major was asian originally but when she became a cyborg she was made racially ambiguous, it cant really be whitewashing if its in the source material.

I thought it made some sense, The company and all the scientists involved are European, so the machine bodies would look European as well. Granted the whole thing does have a passing the buck feel to it, like " hey look we're not racially tone deaf but the evil soulless corporation in the fictional world is racially tone-deaf because they're evil and soulless"

Excellent and fucking hilarious review guys! Can't wait to watch more :) This isn't to say the studios should have whitewashed the story to introduce a big name like ScarJo into this project. But thinking about this from a story level and the corrupt companies perspective (which in itself was pretty much all white :( already), they had to change the ethnicity of the cyborg / projects to hide all facts / memories of who they really were and how they got their brains. So in that perspective, the whitewashing would make complete sense. Doesn't make it right, but I just wanted to throw that idea out there.... what are your thoughts? I do wish they would have gone a complete different route for the major's origins... I still really enjoyed this movie from a fans perspective. It does raise a few interesting questions about an age of cyborgs within the real future... will race, gender, or even species really matter if your brain can be moved from one body to another either physically or digitally. In that vein, and with the whitewashing that happened, that's the philosophical question that comes up in my mind.

They whitewashed three characters actually. The scene where Scarjo beats up the thug in the water. He was supposed to be an Asian guy with a mustache and shades, not a white guy a with a mullet.

The whitewashing was pretty egregious, but I'm mostly just glad the movie turned out decent. They didn't hit it out of the park, but it was a solid attempt and the incredible visuals definitely pick up a lot of the slack for other areas of the movie that are more lacking.
