Kong: Skull Island Movie Review

Фильм және анимация

Before the next Monsterverse movies arrive, I'd better review the only one I haven't yet! Kong: Skull Island, which is yet another origin story for King Kong. In case you were unaware, outside of the original movie there was also a 1970s remake, the Peter Jackson remake, and of course the miscellaneous King Kong tales that cropped up after the beast ended up in the public domain.
But this little excursion to Skull Island is a wee bit different. Being in the Monsterverse, Kong rather quickly establishes his role as a protector of the Earth and kicker of evil monster butt. The tribe on Skull Island is an inconsequential footnote of peace and love because of course they are, and the movie is mostly focused on watching giant monsters beat the crap out of each other.
So yeah, I had a good time.

Fun Fact: The big shipwreck named "Wanderer" is the same name they used for the "SS Venture" in the public domain 1932 novelization of *"KING KONG"* by Delos W. Lovelace. And when Universal wanted to remake Kong between 1975- 1976, under the title: *"The Legend of KING KONG";* using the public domain novelization as a basis, the "Venture" was renamed yet again as the "Panama Queen".

Also, anyone else kind of wish we got a movie showing us Hank Marlow's time on Skull Island along with Gunpei, seeing how two people who'd basically been trained for years to hate and kill each other, worked together to survive on the island? Frankly that sounds pretty interesting.

Believe me, my mother and I really loved Kong in both Kong Skull Island, and Godzilla vs Kong, because he is a very unique character. Sure we are used to seeing him get killed and falling off a skyscraper, but the Monsterverse is the one series where he doesn’t get killed off. Good work on the review, can’t wait to see you reacted to Rampage, the 2018 movie with Dwayne Johnson.

That makes sense.

@@TheToonMonkey I highly agree. My biggest problem with the Peter Jackson version is that it's essentially the 1933 film but unnecessarily doubled in length. I don't know how Jackson took the 100 minutes original and added another 90 minutes to it and felt it was a Justified length for a film with essentially the same story as the original. It just felt like it dragged on when it should have just been 2 hours and 15 minutes at the absolute most. I'm not saying that you can't have a 3 hour movie hell I love Return To The King, another Peter Jackson movie, and that's three and a half but a film must justify its length if it's going to be that long.

It's a good romp, some monster FX remind me of The Mist monsters, but 33 is still a real pathfinder with FX and it's poetic large scale plot. You know, Carpenter use to tease us with sequel bait endings, but I tell you all these set ups these "universes" sort of hurts the movie magic, reminding us it wants to be a franchi$e...nothing stands alone.

If u pay attention to the movie it's kinda implied that kong was actually brought to the island, it would some what explain the ship on the island and why they have a shrine to either kong or his parents. What made no sense to me in this movie how the WW2 soldier found out this lore if none of the natives never talked to him.

Shame that the Monarch series declares this movie non canon (Titans are known since the 50s and are well documented and Monarch has unlimited resources, Hank would be contained and locked up because Monarch puts people who know to much away) and changes Godzilla 2014 (Bridge Scene, Bombing), what makes no sense because the series builds heavily on Skull Island which shouldn’t exist in the first place because of the contraindications of the series. It gives headaches to think about it.

I know Cole’s sacrifice is a joke, but they literally didn’t set up anything to indicate the creature were smart enough to know it was a trap. I just feel bad for the dude. It seemed like a really smart idea.

This was a King Kong movie to introduce the monster franchise, everything else was just cosmetic. At least spectacle is great I guess. And then they say I'm just in for the actions scenes... Anyway great review as always, it's refreshing to watch someone passionate about a subject being so without having to take down other subjects, in short your respect for filmmaking is appreciated, thank you decker !

I am sub'd and have the bell clicked, why am I not getting the notifications for your videos? KZread... anyone home?
