My personal top 5: #1 - Batman Mask of the Phantasm (best one about Batman/the tragedy of Bruce Wayne) #2 - The Dark Knight (best one about the supporting cast/people of Gotham, best live action villains) #3 - The Batman (for the quasi-horror atmosphere and the heavy emphasis on Batman's detective skills) #4 - This one (reinvigorated the superhero genre after a few bad years and I love the aesthetics for Gotham) #5 - TIE, depending on my mood either Batman Begins (best Batman training/origin story, and felt the most like a comic book of the Nolan trilogy) or Adam West's 1966 Batman movie (campy but hilarious and West is frankly iconic).

In 1989, this movie was huge. That summer was the summer of Batman. The logo of the bat symbol was everywhere. The merchandise, the music videos from Prince were always playing on MTV. It was a great time to be a DC fan. Since 1989 was the 50th anniversary of Batman's comicbook debut, it all felt like perfect timing. The 1960's show and the comics were all we had, so as a Batman fan, this movie was such a big deal. Nicholson plays a version of classic Joker, and it's still the best, in my opinion. Keaton is BATMAN. This movie rules.

Jack Nicholson killed it as The Joker, turned from ordinary to one of the most famous villains in comic book history. Filmed on a budget of $50 million dollars, it made $411 million dollars ($872 million dollars today) and it won for Best Production Design at the 1990 Academy Awards.

Nicholson truly was the closest adaptation of Joker we’ve gotten to the comic book version. Before Ledged took the world by storm, Nicholson honestly was considered PERFECT casting for The Joker. Shoutout to Elfman’s score in this film, too. Truly masterful. Though I will say, I’ve never been very fond of the idea that a younger Joker killed Bruce’s parents.

Heath I always hated as Joker, cause he only had the look of Joker, not the essence or personality of Joker. But I recently realized the issue, Heath was never playing Joker, the character that matches his performance...was actually Anarky. Once I realized that I was like AHHH that makes it so much better. He was a horrible Joker, but an amazing Anarky.

This was the best version of Gotham City and the batmobile on film, and some may argue Batman/Bruce Wayne. The design of the city sets were heavily inspired by classic art deco, metropolis architecture, very grimy and industrial. You can argue this movie kicked off the modern era of superhero movies as it was the first one to give a serious take on a mainstream superhero. It was a colossal hit when it came out and it dominated everything during the summer of 1989, including the music charts with prince being a big part of the movies soundtrack. In the months leading up to this movie, everyone had doubts because Michael Keaton was in comedy movies. They actually had to rush the trailer out to calm everyone down. Not only did it calm them down, but it completely got the whole nation hyped for this movie. And then the marketing campaign with the yellow batman emblem was everywhere. What a time it was.

The newer Jokers have nothing to do with comic book Joker. Joker was never just a guy wearing face paint. Altho it took liberties, this film is the closest to being comics accurate of all the Bat-films. This and Batman Returns are the favorite bat movies among most of those over the age of 30. And of course, Keaton returned as Batman last year in THE FLASH.

Every generation seems to have "their Batman." For many, Michael Keaton is still their Batman to this day. It's such a dark and stylish movie, and also features one of the all-time best Batmobile designs. This Batman clearly doesn't follow the "no killing" policy that has become such a major part of his character in the last couple of decades. This Batman was strongly inspired by the 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. After the 1966 Batman TV show, much of the public viewed Batman as a goofy and silly character, an image that the comic books struggled to shake and even made a lot of people skeptical when this movie went into production. This skepticism was compounded when Keaton was cast as Batman, as he was mostly known for comedic roles. If the internet had existed back then, Keaton's casting would've broken it with the massive fan backlash. But The Dark Knight Returns reintroduced Batman as a more brutal and hardened vigilante who would occasionally kill. That was the same approach that Tim Burton took when making this movie, and all doubt was washed away when the movie was released and blew everyone away with its dark and gothic aesthetic.

Let's talk about the science of joker laugh😄 the only person in this planet who can do a perfect laugh as a joker is Jack Nicholson, so real so natural, especially in the scene where he electrocuted the mob, he has a natural long breath, that's why the laughter sounds so good, that wheezing sound like people with asthma is so hard to do if you don't have that naturally, also listen to the laugh after joker push batman and vicki vale off the building, it's so f$&king delicious and satisfying to listen to especially if you listen through earphones, so haunting and joyful, sorry to say but Heath ledger failed at that, he's just "woohh.. haha", except Joaquin Phoenix(great), the rest of them are so fake and forceful, they have to scream to get the joker's laugh, for example Mark Hamill, quite cringe and anoying actually, the laugh was perfectly illustrated by Nicholson by having a set of laughs that range from maniacal and gleefully wild to dark and deeply threatening that sounds natural

This was the movie that legitimized Bats as a pop-culture icon once again. Adam West's 60s tv show had somewhat sullied people's perception and made audiences think that Batman was only a silly character that couldn't succeed in a more noir setting. This movie was a fair bit of a gamble back when it came out, especially since people doubted that Michael Keaton could play the character due to his previous castings in more comedic roles. How wrong they were. You're right about the feel of Gotham too. Tim Burton was a fantastic choice for a ghoulish noir Gotham City. The sequel I think ups the ante a little bit and it's clear he got a lot more creative freedom to meddle with things as he liked. Having rewatched Batman Returns recently, I think it works to its benefit, and I would definitely love to see you check that one out too. I'd also love to shout out Danny Elfman, who created the iconic score for this movie that you still see the reverberations of in Batman media everywhere. That classic Batman theme is everywhere and pretty much THE iconic theme for the character. The Joker's theme is also sufficiently whimsical, and a great piece of music. Of course, this movie does take certain liberties with the Batman mythos. This version of the character is clearly willing to kill people, and his origin has been slightly altered to make his rivalry with the Joker more connected. But I think the uniqueness of it is to this movie's advantage. Speaking of Joker, Jack Nicholson's take on the character is vastly underrated nowadays. He's arguably the most comic-accurate depiction we've gotten on the big screen, whereas Heath Jedger and Joaquin Phoenix were far more experimental and a lot less silly. In fact, I kinda wish they'd go back to that goofiness more frequently. So many Joker interpretations now lack that wacky feel and fun factor that I think is very integral to the character. The grimmer depiction definitely works in certain cases, but it shouldn't become the standard in my opinion. Also, it was interesting to see someone who doesn't seem as ingrained into the comic versions of these characters react to the chemical bath origin. That's actually the most common origin story for the Joker in most iterations. It does vary slightly from version to version though. Sometimes he trips and falls into the vat, other times he deliberately jumps to escape Batman, and in some versions he even gets pushed in. It's interesting to see how it changes with each take.

Previous to this, the only "Batman Movie" we had came out in the late 1960s, and starred Adam West as Batman, as well as the rest of the Batman TV series cast. If you haven't seen that one, you might want to check it out sometime. It IS a product of its time (with the whole Psychedelic themes), but it's still a fun watch. That one I only saw on Television in the early 1970s, while the series was still in syndication (repeats). Getting back to this version, Movie goers of the time (myself included) were "used to" the campiness of the TV series, and weren't really ready for what Tim Burton was going to throw at us. But we DID love it! Nickelson (in his first role in his entire career wearing makeup) did an amazing job as The Joker. Oddly enough, Michael Keaton (fresh off of his role as Beetleguese") also shocked us with his performance. Although, the first time he confronts The Joker, his "YOU WANNA GET NUTS?! COME ON! LET'S GET NUTS!!" line was pure Beetleguese, and we all laughed about it. Otherwise, his performance was very good. Nickelson had topped Ceasar Romero as Joker by a mile. To the point where I refused to watch the Heath Ledger version of Joker because I didn't think Nickelson could be topped. I finally DID watch that movie, and was shocked a second time when Ledger hit it out of the park with his portrayal of the character. All three actors did an outstanding job, while staying true to the character, yet making it "their own". They each defined their era.

12:15 - Something to mention (and I'm NOT trying to get political here).... "Back Alley Surgeons" were actually a thing a long time ago. People who didn't have insurance, or those looking to have a "specific procedure" (if you take my meaning) often had to go to these "underground" people with next to no actual medical knowledge or experience. Which is why a lot of people who went to them ended up in the ground due to piss-poor treatments. So, this scene was actually based somewhat in reality. The "doctor" saying, "You must understand, the nerves were completely severed. Look what I have to work with here... (tools that had been outdated for centuries)" really highlighted the problem with such "practices". It's really no wonder Jack went insane with the results. 13:20 - Also, Jack Palance (the crime boss) was a very well respected actor who always played a villain. Palance, along with John Colicos (most well known for his roles in Westerns of the 1960s and the original Battlestar Galactica from 1978) were both iconic "villains" of the 1960s-1980s. 17:20 - Again, Primate, if you go back and watch Ceasar Romero's portrayal from back in the 1960s, then Nickelson's in 1989, then watch Ledger's portrayal in The Dark Knight, you can see a "progression of the character" and how they relate to the time period they were released in. Romero was the "Campy/Psychedelic" version, which was common in the 1960s, Nickelson was almost an "early Anti-Hero, psychopath" with a plan (late 1980s/early 1990s mentality), and Ledger was "chaos incarnate" of the late 2000s. 19:07 - No, that came from Jack/Joker.... look at the colours of the ribbon, and the writing in crayon. That was him. Bruce/Batman wouldn't do that. Also, he had only moment before found out about the "meeting". 20:40 - That version of the Batmobile was awesome! I'm still not sure which one I find cooler, this one, or the 1960s version. 23:20 - Incoming "Beetlejuice" scene.... (Yes, I looked up the actual spelling this time) 25:30 - I'm not sure if this is a reference to the "original" Alfred, but the actor who played him back in the 1960s TV show/movie was named "Alan Napier" (Joker's character name was "Jack Napier" in this movie). I'm not sure of Joker's name in the old comic books. Could be coincidence, but that would be really weird. ;) 26:00 - You're not joking with that "good casting" remark. They found someone who looked just like a young Jack Nickelson with that huge grin. 28:55 - Actually, that goes back even further. Watch the movie "Patton" with George C. Scott. (Spoiler Alert): Patton stands in a street not long after arriving in North Africa, while German planes strafe him, and he pulls out a pistol and shoots at the planes and their pilots. While the actual "historical events" are "condensed for the movie's run time", much of what is presented IS in fact, true. I highly recommend that movie, if you haven't seen it. 31:50 - Batman decided to let gravity figure it out. ;) 32:05 - I had one of those "Laughing Bag" things.... used to annoy the shit out of people with it. I had it before this movie came out, though. 32:25 - Another "fun fact": When I was a kid back in the 1970s, I had not only many of the Mego "Action Figures" (8" tall fully articulated "dolls") from various franchises, but I had the Ape City playset, the 1960s version of the Batmobile and Batcave (which came complete with the Bat Signal (which took only ONE AAA battery at the time), and the Starship Enterprise Bridge playset. After the Mego line kinda died out, Kenner took over franchise toy lines with their 3.75" based "action figures", that were nowhere near as poseable at the time. I still have some of those Mego "dolls", but they are in nowhere near good enough condition to be able to sell. I also have some of the 12" "dolls" from the Six Million Dollar Man series, but the "pride" of my collection happen to be the Jem and the Hologram dolls I have (also 12" tall), because of the condition they are in. I also have a good bit of the 12" G.I. Joe "dolls" from that time period as well. I collected a lot of plastic models during that era, as well. Many of which I still have. The shame of it is that the 3.75" figures became the "standard" after Star Wars came out. Those weren't nearly as poseable as their 8" counterparts (which were fully articulate), so a lot less fun to play with.

You absolutely need to check out the Sequel, _Batman Returns_ from 1992. Also with Keaton as Batman and also directed by Tim Burton. _Batman Forever_ with Val Kilmer as Batman/Bruce is completely different stylistically and certainly an aquired taste but I personally enjoy it. Only check out the fourth Movie, _Batman & Robin_ (with George Clooney) if you want to play a drinking game over the many ice-related puns. Another reactor would have gotten completely shit-faced doing that if he hadn't balanced the alcohol out with Water! 😂

After the success of Superman the Movie (1978), WB and DC wanted more than anything to bring Batman onto the screen with the same energy. It took a decade to make this. Although it's not the first Batfilm (1941, 1943, 1966), it's the first one to break a whole lotta ground. Timing is everything too and it hit just in time for Bats' 50th anniversary. Tim Burton was the youngest director to take on a film of this size and budget while it seemed at the time, a more experienced filmmaker should've made it. Jack Nicholson from his performance as Joker to earning big bank from merchandising is the stuff of legend. Michael Keaton after several comedies and his first dramatic turn, 'Clean and Sober' (1988) definitely delivered as Batman/Bruce Wayne while winning over a few who said he couldn't. Kim Basinger almost missed the role of Vicki Vale, had to be faxed the script before heading to Pinewood Studios (London, England) and get into a groove of working on a film this size. Everything about this film was phenomenal, from the tone and look to the touches of mood and performance with the characters. All the signatures of Batman's world from old to new comics, including 1986's The Dark Knight Returns and 1988's The Killing Joke. The music by Danny Elfman and the soundtrack by Prince are undenialble. Also winning an Oscar for Best Art Direction by the late, production designer Anton Furst (Gotham City, The Batmobile). Batmania had everybody going crazy and eating up the success. The toys, video games, bookbags, lunch boxes, clothes, tattoos, etc. I became a bigger fan myself, started to get more into the comics, going beyond the tv series of the 1960s (Adam West/Burt Ward) and 1970s-1980s (Hanna Barbara's Superfriends). Burton proved the naysayers wrong and the studio believed in him to make a hit and follow through on it. Without a doubt, comic-book based films and modern day blockbusters owe a lot of thanks to this legendary piece of work.

Yes, that is the Bat signal to alert Batman when the Gotham police needs him. The score is by Danny Elfman who is from the band Oingo Boingo and who has worked with Tim Burton before this movie on Edward Scissorhands the year before. There are at least 2 Prince written and produced songs in the soundtrack in the movie: Partyman and Trust. He made a whole soundtrack inspired by the movie. He made the song Batdance which is very interesting. React to the sequel Batman Returns because it has Danny Devito as the Penguin and Michelle Pfeifer as the Catwoman who is the best Catwoman that stole the movie.

Might as well rip off the band aid. We sadly don’t get to see Billy Dee’s Harvey become Two Face in these movies BUT! In 2021 they released a Batman 89 comic that continues the story of the Burton movies after Returns without the Shumacher ones. And they do Billy Dee Two Face in that. I liked it. Oh yeah and there was a lego version of him in the Lego Batman movie with Billy Dee but he only does like a few lines I think

Honestly with a few exceptions the film feels like a story you would in the Denny O'Niel era of the comics, down to the Joker's Comical yet threatening portrayal (Something I wish newer interpretations of the Joker from the pages and silver screen would do instead of just mass-murdering clown)

People forget that the Batman's "No Killing" Rule was added WAY later to the franchise. In the early days, Batman was killing people left and right, throwing them off buildings, snapping necks and, in one particular memorable event, hanging a mental patient from the Batwing. He gave literally zero Fs back when he first started. Interesting enough, Joker actually died in the very first issue of Batman as a one off character, but they retconned him back to life later on because fans liked the idea of a psycho killer clown. They changed the story so that he survived his initial fall and was simply paralyzed for awhile, but he gets the same death in the comic as he did in the movie.

  • @a_fine_edition2746

Well, the rule had been pretty well-established in the comic world by this point, especially since the 60s had prohibited intense violence in comic books sold to kids. He only really killed people in the very first year of his comics, before he got his own solo series and they introduced Robin. Burton just decided not to translate it to his film. Also, Joker in the original story accidentally stabbed himself and it was originally written for him to die. But I believe they just changed the dialogue so that he was implied to survive at the end. I don't know that he's ever actually died from a fall except in this movie.

He also told him to be careful because he said, he had the worst nightmares of his life and almost went insane playing the joker. He even said he had worse nightmares then when he was acting in the horror movie the shining. Which is crazy to think about.

People don't realize playing the Joker is not like any other roll. You can either play the Joker poorly, or play it well, but in order to play the Joker well you have to BECOME the Joker. You become consumed by it. As the scary thing about Joker, is anyone can become someone like Joker...all it takes is one bad day as Joker says. If you aren't careful. playing the Joker will fuck you up and consume you.

Batman shouldn't be an extremely dark character in my opinion. Yes, h e's a tragic character, but his whole thing is that he doesn't stoop to the criminals' level. In all other adaptations, he commits actual crimes and is just way too dark for me.

THIS is the real Joker origin story - mobster hitman/assassin/crime boss Jack Napier falls into the Ace Chemicals vat while battling Batman. The only thing missing here is that Jack was using the identity of the Red Hood and leading the Red Hood Gang when he fell in the acid. The specifics of WHY he was the Red Hood kinda vary a bit from version to version, but the sort of "gestalt canon" is that the Red Hood was an identity forced on different random people to use them as fall guys, in order to hide the identity of the REAL crime bosses. So, like in this movie, whichever mob boss Jack Napier was working for at the time put him in the role of the Red Hood and tried to frame him as the leader and have him killed. Sometimes Jack works for Carl Grissom, sometimes Carmine Falcone, sometimes for the mob boss trio of Salvatore Valestra, Buzz Bronski, and Chuckie Sol..... This movie does a pretty great job with Joker's gag's and gizmos and jokes, but really it needed to go even MORE over the top. Heath Ledger is phenomenal, but the character he's playing isn't REALLY the Joker. He's more just a creepy chaotic malevolent weirdo. And THAT's the thing this version of Joker is missing. He's kooky and chaotic and nuts, but he's not malevolent and brutal enough. Joker is TOTALLY unhinged and over the top, but he's also a COMPLETELY sadistic violent cruel brutal madman. He LIVES to fill people with laughter AND terror. Joker is SO nuts and horrifyingly dangerous that he's basically the human version of a demon.

The only thing that IS true is the chemical vat. In the comics, we have no idea WHO the Joker before his chemical bath. Maybe he was cold mobster, maybe he was a failed comedian, maybe he was the Red Hood? That's what I love about the Joker, he's scary because we know little about him, it's like Michael Myers. Less is more.

  • @ieyke

    @ieyke

    3 ай бұрын

@@fynnthefox9078 People SAY that. But it's not true. Within the context of a single DC Universe, sure, sometimes they don't know who the Joker is. But overall we DO know for sure that he's Jack Napier, because we have a multiversal perspective, and we've seen versions of Jack Napier who don't become the Joker, and we've seen versions of the Joker where his identity isn't a secret, and he's just always Jack Napier, and we know that it's his real name. Having a multiversal top-down view of things is like a cheat code for overcoming mysteries like that. Any universe where Jack Napier isn't the Joker is basically a what-if universe of "What if some other character became the Joker instead?" The thing that makes Joker interesting is that he HIMSELF doesn't know who he is. It's great that WE know, and he doesn't. The fact that he wakes up every morning, and it's basically a roll of the dice if he's a harmless party clown or a murdering psychopath, or anything in between, and he just makes up a random backstory that he completely believes is true, is completely nuts. And having the context of who he truly is makes it all far more interesting.

What I always found most interesting and even ironic is that in this universe, the very man who was Batman's greatest rival and enemy turned out to be the very reason why he became Batman. The twist that it was Joker was unexpected but in hindsight, it kind of works much better in a way. Both of them created each other and I find it rather fitting. Also unlike most of other Batman media, we don't really see how Bruce became Batman. He was already that at this point in time. I kind of like that idea. We all know the backstory. Don't really need to see it again lol. Glad that The Batman followed in this version's footsteps as well.
