It's massive shame that an army with such a small pool of units, especially compared to Death Guard for example, is difficult to optimise with its only two major characters.

Yeah the unit count really is very very small in comparison to what should be an equal footing Codex with the DG.

Yeah it cuts deep. Allot of the flavour of the thousand sons codex is just much less efficient than the go to rubrics, scarabs and exalted sorcerers. I would like to run some tzaangors, daemon engines, magnus and ahriman and have it be somewhat competitive. Maybe a video on making these alternate lists work would be a good idea? Thanks for all your great work, glad to see you back! :)

Ill certainly be doing some list building videos very soon. Need to create a bit of space at home to take the photos as well as I always like to include my own work as a demo to what they look like rather than a wall of text. I'll be looking at both competitive and more flavourful fun ones!

I am currently running him in a list with a 10 man blob of Termies. His whole job is to buff the unit with Weaver and Presage. Sure I lose out on relics and the like, but being able to reroll a failed buff roll or fish for super smites is invaluable. You can also take Glamour with him but I think in most situations you would rather have Doombolt to get him out of a nasty situation. It also frees up cabal points that you would normally spend to ensure a spell goes off allowing them to be spent elsewhere like casting a second Doombolt or gaining another Command Point. I personally think that he's worth it just for what I've described but hey, maybe I'm missing something.

That sounds a good use tbh. If you can get that SoT unit so buffed that Ahriman is never in trouble sat in the middle then it’s a sound plan. And yeah I guess you don’t need Cabal spends to get the cast value up due to re-rolls it seems a good way to go👍

The thing is that you want 1 excalted to have a 4th HQ as loyal thrall

He's in everyone of my lists. He's a touch expensive but I load him up with my buff spells for 10 block of termies. Almost guaranteed casts.

Do you run those Termies forwards though? Either crystal or teleport? In which case is Ahriman up with them in a more offensive play style?

He's pricey for a caster but I think he's worth it. I actually don't run any Exalted Sorcerers. Just Ahriman, a Daemon Prince, and an Infernal Master in a Battalion.

Interesting combo of HQ's I've only seen in a few lists tbh. If you can make it work, all power to you! More commonly for sure is double Exalted and IM in general, but its nice to see people mix it up. Ahriman or a DP is not a bad option either way, just far less common under the new book.

I still think he is for sure. The re rolls all test as great. I think he is an auto include

If you have an Exalted Sorcerer with the Athaennaen Scrolls (sp?), he should be taking Firestorm to fish for that 9+ unmodified roll, using a Glimpse of Eternity pact roll from an Infernal Master to help out. If you put Ahriman in the same army, he should be the one with Baleful Devolution. That way he can have a good chance to re-roll into something good. That power can tear apart Drukhari jetbikes and hellion bricks.

Great video man as always. I always include Ahriman for the same reason that Liam from Average Blokes does (he won 18 games in a row with his Tsons list). Ahriman can re-roll all of his psychic powers, so he is a mortal wound machine. Better chance of getting super smites and unmodified 9s for some of the other powers

Just seen a similar comment on this video, the big win streak and 50 Rubric list I believe? Very solid evidence from a good player as to including him v's not. Im still not convinced, but then I dont have his gaming prowess!

@@OldAverageBritGaming you brought up very valid points. And the warlord trait "seeker after shadows" is alternatively a great way to make an exalted a mortal wound machine as well. I think that the problem with Ahriman is he's slightly too expensive for most people's taste and Tsons is super tight on points & CPs. It can be argued either way and no one is wrong to be fair.

if a list is doing a two detachment list which i've seen quite a few of. i think he is actually worth including. if the list is going single detachment i think he does lose something. he is still viable though but just needs a reason as to why you take him over a exalted

@@OldAverageBritGaming Yes, for me the extra 20 points for re-roll psychic tests (and the other things) is worth it. My HQ list is Exalted Sorcerer, Ahriman, Daemon Prince and Sorcerer. Ahriman looks cool but obviously Exalted on disc is the better choice. Unfortunately, it is often the case with named characters. You’re paying a premium for the fluff essentially.

I wouldn't say that's entirely true. He caters to certain playstyles. Liam Hackett's hyper-competitive list runs him alongside another Exalted Sorc.

Ahriman is still god-tier even after all the nerfs but being 5 points cheaper than a Winged TSons DP with Sword/Axe if put on a disc is too expensive. He is squishier and weaker in melee (where TSons are extremely lacking) but stronger in the Psychic phase. Either he needs to have 4 casts or he needs to be lowered by 10 points to be worth running. He isn't bad but he is too expensive for what he does imo. Also, edit: Ahriman shouldn't even be used for fighting in melee so the flat 3 damage on the staff is rarely useful.

All valid points, but even the DP is struggling to feature in many big lists of late as well, which is a crying shame! Slightly over costed Ahriman, lack of flexibility, and yeah agreed 1 more cast would be a nice feature for sure given thats his speciality. As for combat he is handy still in those back lines when the enemy manage to drop in and you need something to counter, but yeah magic is his thing. I find it a shame when your 2 most special characters in a codex just dont find a home in many lists :(

@@OldAverageBritGaming DP's are still pretty good. What they need imo is for the claws to be brought back to ap -2. You don't get a truck load of extra attacks for using 2 talons anymore so it isn't problematic. Also, Exalted Mutation should have its sorceror lock removed so anyone can use it. The only reason Cult of Mutation is "meh" is because of the relic being locked. Remove that, instantly becomes tier 2 at worst and tier 1 at best as your main Cult. A S8, T7 dp with 6 attacks is pretty good.

@@OldAverageBritGaming You could cut off the head of the axe and kitbash a scythe blade to place there instead to run as a Blade. Or cut the handle a ton and use a big blade to turn it into a sword. Takes time but better than buying/building a whole new one.
