I was 12 years old when our house burned to the ground at 2am. Back then there were no smoke detectors. My older brother and I just made it out. By the time we ran outside with our parents and little brother (under 1 minute) fire was coming out the roof of our bedroom. I'm 64 now, and I still shudder, even when I smell a camp fire. I'm glad everyone got out of this one. Fire moves so fast!

I worked at a psych state hospital and while a patient was in his room another set the mattress on fire. the patient went to the window but they are locked. I ran in and got him out however, my first thought was to lock the room to help stop the spread. Thank God I was able to see the patient through the smoke and bring him out. My pant leg caught fire but I patted it out. By now one could hardly see the lights on the ceiling but we got the whole ward of 25 people out. I still shake when I think OMG! what if I locked that door? I would not be able to live with that guilt.

They were fighting it from 3 fronts. This is a corner lot and they had most of the equipment protecting the garage on the other side as well as a 2nd garage just behind and the neighbor's house. If the garage caught fire, it would have leap to the neighbors garage (just a few feet behind) then the neighbors house attached to the garage and a third house only a few feet away. The other side of the house is fully involved, no chance to save it. Although this side looks like they are not fighting it, they are. This house is huge. Saving the garages was their only option to save the neighbor's houses. They have units on Central ave, Q st. Cadish Ave and R st.

Thank you for the rest of the story. As you can tell from my comment above it does not look like they intended to save anything but I guess they decided early on to forget this house and just save the neighbors house. The water from the ladder truck and from the firefighter sitting on the tree was not even reaching the fire. A lot of wasted water that could have actually helped.

The constant, driving wind, and sooooo many open windows into the structure...literally like pouring a steady stream of gas onto a fire. That house was doomed. Other comments here about the firefighting being proactive to save nearby property...yeah that's all they could do. The heat from that can autoignite things by itself, and when the envelope of heat is pushed outwards with wind...its bad news if you have a house on the other side of this.

This looks like a controlled burn of this property--the fire was well underway and rapidly spread and the collapsed part of the property on the right looks like the roof was purposely severed from the main body of the property. Unless this was from a gas leak explosion or something along those lines I would be hard pressed to believe this was an actual unplanned fire.

Why would they burn what looks like a perfectly good house? they burn old junk houses that sat abandoned for 20 years with it's roof having holes in it, this house looks like it was in good shape along with the lawn, it burned so fast because of the modern crap in these houses- all chipboard construction, laminated basically plastic "wood" flooring and carpeting, upholstered furniture with their guts basically being made like solidified gasoline, MDF with wood veneer furniture, styrofoam and foam insulation, plastic siding, asphalt roofing over chipboard, the stuff goes up like a gas can. You dont see this inplaces like Romania and Hungary, they build houses there out of kiln fired red terracotta blocks, stucco'd outside, roofs are covered with kiln fired red terracotta tile

    7 ай бұрын

@5.2litrecat45 it might be lack of staffing at neighboring stations .....70% of the fire service is volunteers, keep that in mind.....maybe no mutual aid agreements between local communities / governments.....or lack of funding, or worse, lack of adequate water supplies, or the other departments are fighting another fire somewhere else or they were called to an accident scene or etc and the other departments near there are probably covering that department area also while the 1s are at that fire scene, thats called a.... move up order, and some states and cities say... if the fire fighter does not have interior certificates they can not go to citys calls or city move up's.... its also on the ic / chief decision based on the information available to them at the time and is based on several factors like neighbors homes, wind and etc to decide if they should do an offensive fire attack or defensive, in this case they decided defensive because it was wind driven.. and the goal is to keep as much heat as possible from igniting another home or car on fire and making it a larger fire....i encourage you to join the local fire department if they take volunteers, and see whats its like.... it's alot tougher then people think or see...

That's what happens when putting in stupid, unnecessary wide windows. It compromises the structural integrity leaving very little to hold up the roof and floors above.

It is so comforting to see the VFD and its VFFs in a non-action video, depicting the Volunteers doing nothing in the way of actual firefighting, which is their normal non-aggressive system of fire suppression and extinguishment. You gotta Love them Volunteers, you just gotta !!! (i.e.) Look Ma, we got a brand new Ladder Truck Water Tower, so firefighters are no longer needed at fires. We just hook up to a water fire hydrant and then pour water onto the fire from a safe distance, a really safe distance.

Why don 't YOU join a volunteer department and show us all how it's really done? Or are you one of those career boys who think volunteers are nothing but hobby firemen? Go snap your suspenders somewhere else.

I feel for the people, so sad. It looks like an older wooden home, looks to be a total loss. Why do they have so little water going on this big fire and the black tower is doing nothing?? They have a bay or ocean there, bring in a chopper and do a few water drops it would be about out.
