This was a good lesson in deck gun usages heavy fire and low man power , if the had a deck gun they could have set up in front and controlled the exposure better! But it was a valiant effort !!

Watching all four segments, FD had little chance of any save on this one, exposure protection was priority due to the size and winds. Fire was through-and-through on arrival so no primary search was possible. IC made good calls for exposure protection and working with what appears to be limited GPM's of the hydrant's. Looking at it from an IC perspective based on the available video the best option sequence this one is: 1) 1st Due/IC performs a 360 size up, 2) set the collapse zone, 3) get the exposure protection set up and water flowing, 4) get available large hand lines flowing in to the fire building, 5) get master streams on the fire building. Additionally and as simultaneously as best as possible based on staffing: 1) get your 1st due rescue to set up RIT, 2) get a woods/brush unit and PD (or fire-police if the area has that) start a brand / spot fire patrol in the area due to winds. (an available rescue can be used for this as well), 3) set up rehab/decon, and then assess effectiveness of operations. Use your battalion, safety, and training Chiefs for management of your sectors. With water supply issues like this, get a tanker/tender shuttle and dump tank (or stationanary tender with high volume pump) set up in a location that allows for pull through dump/supply operations. Even if you need to hand jack some 3 1/2" or LDH a block over, preventing the tankers/tenders from having to back in/out of a dump tank location is best practice and will increase the GPM's the water shuttle can provide. IC's need to call for additional alarm response in a timely fashion, 2-alarm response at a minimum for initial response due to size of structure, amount of fire involvement, and environmental conditions (wind) plus relief crews as needed. With the apparent water supply issues off the hydrant system a tanker/tender special call would be appropriate for this fire as well. Stay safe out there.

I heard you commenting about where to aim the stream this is not a simple question. When the master stream established then the hose nozzleman will try to position where he can reach the maximum points of putting water through the exterior envelope and also be able to keep the exposures wet. Where to focus is different with every fire. Usually the best place to focus is A: Exposures fire containment is an essential part of the equation B: The most intense fire is where the seat of the fire will be found. C: if unable to get B then sweep the lowest part of the fire and cool the fire from the bottom up.

Deck gun first choice once hydrant in service. 8 minutes latter they finally got water following from their Truck. Suggest they look into German L-32 faster time to service for elevated stream stream has its own pump and water . Or a Chicago type Squad with its quick action elevated platform with 1500 gpm pump and 500 gal water. Perfect example of having the right tool for the right job.

No deckgun? What's taking so long to get that aerial operational?

Wind...the enemy of every good and best called firefighting plan. Period. Dont care how many deck guns, water cannons and manpower...add high winds to the mix...its called protect exposures, watch out for brush fires, keep the crews safe.

Were depends but the structure was fully involved so hitting the exposure first is critical to keeping the fire spreading, once more lines are charged they can knock down the main fire...wasting water on a fully involved house achieves little and leaves the exposure vulnerable to radiant heat or flame impingement....this crew were struggling to get there lines sorted out, 1 line to begin attack, then add lines once your got water on the exposure

To the guy that shot this video, a description would be good. Where is this located, cause (if you know), was anyone hurt and did everyone get out, sounds like other houses caught so tell us?? Frustrating to have to guess from just watching and your little bit of commentary.

Definitely some training takeaways on this fire. The pump operator sets the tempo of the fire and maybe inexperience or lack of training set him up for failure. The deck gun was not raised from its retractable base and drastically affects the angle of the deck gun. Additionally you can view the operator work through the pull ring which allows the deck gun to have full range of motion up and down which is why it was shooting over the house. Additionally we can all see pump discharge pressure was low in the beginning. With that being said the house was a loss regardless. But it’s still a teachable moment.

Captain had his hands in his pockets with 8 people just standing, 15 minutes for ladder to start spraying, one guy spraying, water hose pinched,....This station needs to be cat in tree unit

Do they not have mutual aid with the other departments in the area. That is too big for one small department to handle.

I thought mutual aid was a given in any place in the country. Ask for it, and it comes. In New Jersey, it's routine to have three, four, or five departments at a major fire. One volunteer in Hawthorne told me a good chunk of his work was in the neighboring, and larger, city of Paterson.

If they aren't going to use the deck gun's then their low income departments should not even obtain fire engines with them. I see on KZread many smaller and volunteers never using them. They are a great thing that can accomplish a lot in a short time

Ladder pipe, slow coming. Hose lay and setup proximity to fire, was confusing. The way the wind was blowing, setting up in front of that building, might not be a good idea.

seems like there was an issue of comand an direction.

They don’t seem very experienced in handling a fire this big

I've seen houses on my street catch fire. They were Twin homes. The fires were quite bad; nothing like this.

I hope they had working smoke alarms 🚨 in the house to warn them that the house was on fire 🔥 and that is how they were able to escape safely.

Apperantly there wasn’t and deck gun ordered on that engine.

Not every engine is equipped with a deck gun. However this one is. I agree, i dont understand why it took so long to get it into play here. I'm not sure why it took so long for mutual aid either. In my mind this would have been a 2nd alarm on arrival possibly even a 3rd due to conditions and rapid fire spread. Also i am a certified FF. I understand its easy to watch a video and critique without being there. All I can say is hopefully somewhere in the future a department can learn something positive from this video from things that could have been done differently on the fire ground.

D- at best, just because they saved the nearby structures and boat (maybe if they were lucky). This should have been multiple alarms upon arrival. Where's the master stream operator - must be on a coffee break. All of these goons needs training and an enema - they are SO SLOW just milling around, no sense of urgency - ah, the house is on fire, who cares. The insurance company should be sent this video, and the fire department billed for the total loss, rebuild, and exposures.

You know this is scary I don't know where you live but I be thinking about getting out there not even put any water on it and they should have the backup I live in a little town and when I see little I mean we have one four-way stop sign that's only because it's by the school we don't even have 1,000 people in our town but when the pole caught on fire in my town they called all the local towns in that they needed help with they had a a barn fire here last year and they called in all kinds of local teams we're both our backup they surely have local guys coming in from other departments there's a reason why fire departments work together on big fire I had to Uncle's that were firefighters and the one thing they always talked about was good communication your town I be getting the heck out of because I be afraid to lose my house only see one fire hydrant that they're using but all these hoses and there's some of them and they're not even using hoses I think they need to be trained better

I can't believe all the people there in two trucks and only one line putting water on that fire. I don't understand some of these departments they stand around and talk and point and run up and down the road your job is to put water on the fire, there are two trucks there and at least 10 firefighters somebody could be using another line to get water there besides the one guy standing there.
