WOW. I was having the same doubts at first but I believed that you know best and having the rebar inside and the high psi cement running across the inside of the blocks would be more than enough, but I was still having the same doubts. So… I’m happy to see that you have given it a second thought. You are a very responsible person and contractor with a good head on your shoulders. Needless to say, I’m super glad you’ll be putting in the steel beam reenforcement. Kudos to you Superman.

This is one of the reasons I watch these videos, things no one could get away with where I live without permits, engineering plans, inspections at every stage, etc. Watching two dudes putting in steel beams without appropriate and approved safety measures, well, I live the reckless danger of it. Lol

Edd, what if you glassed in the outdoor space and made it a dining area/conservatory. Separate the indoor space from the dining area with bifold glass doors. It would give you more living space, give an open feel with the glass roof, and create a dual space for planters and a dining table. Just an idea.

Sadly having block walls and insulation will reduce the original limited footprint the one advantage of the old skinny terracotta walls not structural as you cannot relie on the old stone as support either ,the steel has to take the bracing strain .Flooring and upstairs walls need the solid base too.Noggins to come from offcut timbers sort of Weetabix shape!

Edd, the fact you have a small outdoor area is quite limiting to being used only in temperate weather. If I were buying that home, I’d want an elevated glass conservatory with two skylights. You could create a steel & glass structure 4-5 feet high, with a slanted steel & glass structure with skylights up to the top roof. As long as your skylights were on a switch they’d be easy to open and close (with a sensor to automatically close during inclement weather). If you use the right kind of glass that will withstand both cold and hot temperatures, it would be a useable space for most of the year. All year if it has heated floors and a mini-split. Of course as ceiling fan would be important, too. I’d fill it with plants to bring the outdoors in. With bifold doors to the interior it would be an awesome addition. I think it’s an opportunity to create value.

I have been thinking the same thing about the space I was thinking, keeping the outdoor area the same size as it originally was and pushing the doors there and keeping all that space for the living area. or you can also put foldable glass doors right there on the wall where the outside start instead of on the inside where you’re planning on putting them so that way you can close those doors and it’ll be watertight and then you can open them up to the outside when you want.

Edd and Anna, if you go ahead with your plan to make a salon upstairs, (which I agree with for more communal/family living space,) then I think you should include in your build a hidden/secret cabinet that opens to reveal a small bar sink, drinks & snacks refrigerator, microwave, storage for a few mugs/glasses, plates and napkins. I can imagine the salon being used by the family to watch television/cable movies, and they would want some snacks. The family members should not have to go downstairs to the kitchen just for simple drinks and snacks and be required to carry everything up the stairs. If you do a build-in cabinet and hide all of what I mention, it would not detract from the stylishness of the room which could also be used for more formal entertaining of guests. .

I love watching this project come together & watching you & Louis working together. A suggestion for you on how to move those steel beams...Cut dowels or rebar into pieces to place under the beam, they will slide/roll along easily!

Ed you need the thing that Dan from Rural France uses to lift heavy things. You are doing good with your progress!!!! Best.

I don’t know. Having a kitchen on a different floor from the living area feels inconvenient.

I feel so bad for your backs!!! If you have anymore jobs that require that heavy lifting you should invest in load bearing equipment , even with the hydrolic wheel barrows for cement ...you are young and strong now but this stuff is going to catch up with you later . But let me say that your work ethic and knowledge for doing things is impressive 😊

I gotta say as soon as I saw that cement block on top of that beam I said oh no to myself. I gotta be honest. If the beam was turned the other way I wouldn't have thought it as much. But as soon as I saw that I said oh boy! You're definitely doing the right thing!

that 'wooden beam' under the cement blocks is temporary, held up by the acrow props, whilst the cement sets.

Love that you trust your gut on safety! So interesting to watch the upstairs floor go in. Are you still going to build Anna a new chateau?😊

Anna where was Ed's back brace so he doesn't hurt his back again?? That crazy thing that looks like a weight lifters belt!

Should the wooden beam ends have been treated? My thought was about moist wood next to a rust-able metal. It reminds me of Dan's build in 'Escape to Rural France' He's been putting in flooring and noggins, and steel beams. Also I hope you add more windows on the street level. Thanks for sharing your amazing skills with us

Previous solution was defenently to weak. If You have done it a little bit bigger and not used these stones than it worked. I mean pouring straight to the place and not used any these stones what You have there right now. Also If You weld something thick than before welding it together You need to cut 45 angle to the corner while welding is not penetrading if it is straight end.

The weld appears to be a tack weld. To fuse the metal a grove ground into each side at a 45 degree angle is done before welding and then filled with the weld while chipping slag as it is filled

I think this is an incredibly well-designed built and really look forward to the finish on it. The transformation of the space from rotting husk to this stage is nothing short of remarkable. Excellent work in planning and design of this house.
